Start with your phone’s cellular-usage report, then enable its low-data setting and limit cellular or background access for apps that do not need it. For AI features, check whether each one processes requests on the device or in the cloud: an on-device-only option can avoid cloud processing for supported features, but may make some functions unavailable.

What can—and cannot—reduce cellular data use

“AI-connected device” can mean many things, but the controls here are for smartphones: iPhones and Android phones using a limited or metered cellular plan. The most reliable first move is to identify which apps are using cellular data. System-wide data-saving modes can then curb background activity, while app-level restrictions let you preserve cellular access for services where it matters.

AI features do not all work the same way. Some requests can be processed on the device; others use cloud services and need an internet connection. Choosing on-device processing for a feature that supports it may reduce the need for that feature to send a request to the cloud. It does not reduce every kind of phone traffic, and it may limit which AI functions are available.

Official platform guidance describes settings and processing modes, but does not give a universal data figure for a typical AI prompt, voice session, or edited image. Consumption will depend on the feature and how it is used, so a per-task estimate should not be treated as established without measurements for that specific setup.

Find out which apps use cellular data

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Cellular.
  2. Review the cellular-usage figures shown for individual apps. Look for apps with unexpectedly high use, especially those you do not need while away from Wi-Fi.
  3. To stop an app using cellular data, turn off its cellular-data control on that screen. The app’s service will then use Wi-Fi only; do not expect it to work over cellular data.

Apple notes that the phone’s statistics may not match your carrier’s billing period. You can reset device statistics and check them over a period that reflects your own use, but contact your carrier for the most accurate total for the current billing period. See Apple’s iPhone cellular-data settings guide.

On Android

  1. Open Settings and look for Network or Connections, then Data usage. The precise path and labels depend on the phone maker and Android version.
  2. Review usage by app and identify unexpected or high-use apps.
  3. If the menu path does not match your phone, search Settings for data usage or Data Saver.

Android’s documentation explains how Data Saver manages traffic on metered networks; manufacturers may present related controls differently. See Android’s Data Saver documentation.

Make the report useful

Do not treat a single high-use app as automatically unnecessary. First consider what you were doing during the period shown: streaming, navigation, messaging, backups, and other activity may account for its total. If an app is one you rarely use away from Wi-Fi, restricting it is a reasonable first test. If it provides a service you depend on, check its behavior before removing access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the measurement period in mind. Device statistics can be reset and may cover a different interval from the carrier’s billing cycle. For a useful before-and-after comparison, note the device’s current totals, make a small set of changes, and check again after a representative period of use. For billing-period accuracy, use the carrier’s figure.

Use the phone’s system-wide data-saving mode

Control Scope and behavior What to keep in mind
iPhone Low Data Mode Reduces certain background and automatic activity on the selected connection. Apple describes reduced background app refresh, lower streaming quality, paused automatic downloads and backups, and paused updates for some services. Effects vary by app. It is a broad data-saving setting, not a control that blocks only AI traffic. Apple’s Low Data Mode guide
Android Data Saver On a metered network, blocks background data and signals apps to use less data in the foreground where possible. You can allow selected apps to use background metered data despite the restriction. App behavior and menu paths may vary. Android’s Data Saver documentation

Turn it on when cellular data is the concern

On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and select Low Data Mode if that option is available for your connection. Apple’s labels and available options can depend on the connection and software version. For more detail on the setting’s effects, consult Apple’s Low Data Mode guide.

On Android, search Settings for Data Saver and enable it. If your phone offers a separate way to identify a network as metered, use the setting appropriate to the connection you want to manage. Android documents Data Saver’s behavior on metered networks; exact screens differ by manufacturer and OS version.

Allow exceptions for apps that need timely access

A system-wide restriction can delay background activity. On Android, Data Saver lets you allow specific apps to use background data despite the restriction. On iPhone, you can manage cellular access app by app in Settings > Cellular. Consider whether messaging, maps, security alerts, or another service needs timely connectivity before restricting it. Otherwise, notifications, updates, or app content may arrive only after you open the app or reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Think of a system mode as a broad first layer, not a precise list of what can and cannot connect. If an app is important but you notice a delay in background updates, check whether it needs an exception or cellular access. Conversely, if the phone is still using more data than expected, app-by-app controls can target a particular source without changing the behavior of every other service.

Choose cellular access app by app

Use app-level restrictions when you want to preserve cellular access for some services while stopping others from using the mobile network. This is more selective than turning off cellular data for the whole phone or relying only on a system-wide mode.

  • Restrict apps that can wait: If an app does not need to update or sync while you are away from Wi-Fi, turn off its cellular access on iPhone or restrict its background metered-data access on Android.
  • Keep essential services connected where needed: Before restricting an app, consider whether it needs to receive timely messages, provide navigation, or deliver security notifications.
  • Know the difference between background and foreground use: Android Data Saver blocks background data on a metered network and asks apps to reduce foreground use where possible. It does not mean every app becomes unusable when opened. On iPhone, switching off cellular data for an app means its service uses Wi-Fi only.

If you are unsure which restriction fits, begin with a specific high-use app rather than disabling connectivity broadly. Check its behavior on Wi-Fi and cellular afterward so you can tell whether an essential function depends on the access you removed.

Choose the control that matches the problem

If an app is using data while you are not actively using it, focus on background-data controls and the system-wide mode. If you want the app to stop using cellular data altogether on iPhone, turn off its cellular-data setting; it will use Wi-Fi only. Android Data Saver is different: it restricts background use on a metered network, while signaling apps to reduce foreground use where possible. Those distinctions matter when you are deciding whether a map, messaging app, or other service should remain available while you are out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing a restriction, try the app in the conditions where you need it. A messaging app may still open but may not update in the background as promptly; a service without cellular access on iPhone will need Wi-Fi. If the change interferes with something you rely on, restore access for that app instead of disabling the broader safeguards that are helping elsewhere.

Check how the AI feature processes requests

There is no single “AI data” switch that describes every feature. Processing can differ between features from the same platform, and an on-device option for one feature does not establish that other requests also stay on the phone.

Samsung Galaxy AI

Samsung’s support guidance identifies examples it categorizes as on-device, including translation and some message features, and examples it categorizes as cloud-based, including auto formatting, summarizing, auto corrections, and image editing. It also documents a Process data only on device control for supported Galaxy AI functions. If you enable it, some cloud-based features may stop working or become unavailable, and some functions require internet access. Availability varies by device and software version.

Samsung specifically states that “Live Translate, however, makes use of on-device AI only.” That statement applies to Live Translate as described in Samsung’s support guidance, not to translation tools generally or every AI function. Apple Intelligence

Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on the device, while more complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute. This describes Apple’s processing approach; it is not a guarantee that every feature or request works offline. If you are trying to avoid cellular use, manage the app’s cellular access and the phone’s data-saving settings as well as checking which processing mode applies. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence and privacy guide.

What on-device-only processing changes

When a particular feature can process locally, selecting that mode can avoid the cloud request for that feature. The trade-off is functionality: a cloud-dependent operation may no longer work, or the available feature set may be narrower. Check the feature’s own requirements instead of assuming that a phone-wide AI setting covers every app or request.

On-device processing and cellular-data restrictions solve related but different problems. A local AI operation may not need a cloud request for that function, but the app or phone can still use cellular data for other activity. A cloud-based feature may need an internet connection, but whether it uses cellular depends on the connection and the app’s access settings. Use the AI feature’s processing control to manage that feature’s mode, and the phone’s network controls to manage connectivity more broadly.

What to check before changing an AI setting

  • Identify the exact feature: Do not assume that a setting for one assistant, translation function, or image tool applies to every AI feature on the phone.
  • Look for the processing mode: Check the feature’s own settings for an on-device or local-processing option. Samsung documents a device-only processing control for supported Galaxy AI functions.
  • Check what stops working: Cloud-based operations may require internet access or become unavailable when cloud processing is disabled. Feature availability can also vary by device and software version.
  • Keep network controls in place: Low Data Mode, Data Saver, and app-level access restrictions can still matter even when a particular AI function is processed locally.

Watch for cellular use that continues unexpectedly

Wi-Fi Assist on iPhone

A phone connected to weak Wi-Fi may still use cellular data. Apple says Wi-Fi Assist is on by default and can switch to cellular when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, which may increase mobile-data use. If cellular consumption rises while you think you are on Wi-Fi, check Settings > Cellular for Wi-Fi Assist and decide whether to turn it off. Turning it off can leave you with a poor Wi-Fi connection rather than switching to cellular. Apple documents the setting in its cellular-data settings guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foreground activity and automatic tasks

Data Saver and Low Data Mode can reduce or pause some background tasks, downloads, backups, updates, or streaming behavior, but their effects are not identical across apps. An app actively used on cellular can still transfer data, and Android’s Data Saver only signals apps to use less in the foreground where possible. If a particular app remains a concern, review its cellular or background-data permissions rather than assuming a global mode will block all of its traffic.

Expect some convenience trade-offs when a low-data setting is active. Automatic downloads and backups may pause, updates may wait, streaming quality may be lower, and background refresh can be reduced. These are intended ways to limit automatic use, but they can also make content less current or change the experience of an app. If a task needs to happen promptly, keep the relevant app connected or use it on an unmetered Wi-Fi network when available.

Metered Wi-Fi is a separate network context

Cellular-data controls target mobile-network use, while Android’s Data Saver documentation specifically describes behavior on metered networks. If a Wi-Fi connection is itself metered, check the applicable network settings as well; moving traffic from cellular to Wi-Fi does not necessarily make that traffic free or unlimited.

If usage does not fall after a change

Check one layer at a time. Confirm that the app you intended to restrict is actually listed with cellular use, that the low-data mode is enabled for the connection you are using, and that you are comparing the same kind of activity over a representative period. On iPhone, also consider Wi-Fi Assist if you expected to be on Wi-Fi. On Android, remember that Data Saver manages background traffic on a metered network and does not promise to block every foreground transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use an AI function and are trying to determine whether it is cloud-based, check the particular function rather than inferring its behavior from a different AI feature. A data total by app can show that the app used cellular data, but it generally does not establish which request or operation accounted for it. Avoid concluding that an individual prompt, voice session, or image edit used a particular amount based only on a change in the phone’s overall total.

A practical setup for a limited data plan

  1. Establish a baseline. Check the phone’s app-by-app cellular report. Note which apps are using the most data and whether the phone’s measurement period corresponds to your carrier’s billing period.
  2. Enable the platform’s data-saving mode. Turn on Low Data Mode on iPhone or Data Saver on Android when you need to conserve data on a limited or metered connection.
  3. Restrict avoidable app traffic. Turn off cellular access for nonessential apps on iPhone, or limit their background metered-data access on Android. Preserve access for apps whose timely connectivity matters to you.
  4. Check the AI features you actually use. Look for a local-processing or on-device-only option in the specific feature’s settings. Use it if its available functions meet your needs, and expect cloud-dependent features to be limited when cloud processing is disabled.
  5. Check for unwanted network switching. On iPhone, consider whether Wi-Fi Assist is moving traffic to cellular when Wi-Fi is poor. Also distinguish cellular traffic from any metered Wi-Fi use.
  6. Review usage again after representative use. Compare the app-level report after a typical stretch of use or billing period. If the phone’s total and carrier total differ, use the carrier’s current-period figure for billing accuracy.

Make changes in a sensible order: first identify the high-use apps, then enable the system mode, and finally adjust individual apps or AI features. This lets you see which change affects your usage and helps avoid cutting off a service you need. If a setting produces an unwanted delay or loss of a cloud function, you can make a targeted exception rather than abandoning every data-saving control.

How to judge whether the changes are working

Compare usage over a period that includes the same kinds of activity—for example, your usual mix of messaging, navigation, streaming, and AI features. An app’s cellular total can help identify which service changed; a total phone figure alone will not tell you whether a particular AI request caused the difference. Device statistics may cover a different interval from your billing cycle, so use the carrier’s current-period total when checking plan consumption.

Do not assume that a small or large change proves how much data a single prompt used. The official guidance cited here does not quantify typical mobile-data consumption for prompts, voice conversations, or image edits. A meaningful per-task comparison would need to specify the device, app, request, network conditions, and measurement period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal savings figure to expect from turning on Data Saver, Low Data Mode, or on-device AI processing. The amount of traffic affected depends on which apps and functions you use, what runs in the background, and whether the feature relies on cloud services. Judge the result using your own app-level and carrier totals, while remembering that the phone’s report may not align exactly with the carrier’s billing window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will on-device AI stop my phone from using mobile data?

No. On-device processing can avoid a cloud request for a supported feature, but it does not stop other apps or phone services from using cellular data. Use app-level cellular controls and the phone’s data-saving mode to manage broader network use.

Does Android Data Saver block apps when I open them?

Not necessarily. On a metered network, Data Saver blocks background data and signals apps to use less data in the foreground where possible. You can allow selected apps to use background metered data despite the restriction.

What happens if I turn off cellular data for an iPhone app?

That app’s service uses Wi-Fi only. It should not be expected to work over cellular data while its cellular-data control is off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I know how many megabytes one AI prompt or image edit uses?

The platform guidance here does not provide a universal per-task figure. Usage depends on the device, app, request, network conditions, and measurement period; a specific estimate would require measuring that setup.

Why is my iPhone using cellular data while connected to Wi-Fi?

Apple says Wi-Fi Assist is on by default and can switch to cellular when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. Check Settings > Cellular if you suspect this is happening. Turning Wi-Fi Assist off may leave the phone on a weak Wi-Fi connection instead.

The Bottom Line

Start with your app-by-app cellular report, enable Low Data Mode or Data Saver, and restrict only the apps that do not need timely cellular access. Check AI processing feature by feature: on-device options may avoid cloud requests for supported functions, but they do not replace network controls or guarantee that every AI feature works offline. Review usage over a representative period and use your carrier’s total for billing-period accuracy.
