These are optional accommodations—not cures—and the best approach depends on the person, setting, and task. If distress or avoidance is disrupting daily life, a qualified clinician can help you consider broader support.
What misophonia triggers are—and why they vary
Misophonia involves reduced tolerance to particular sounds or related stimuli. A reaction may include emotional, cognitive, or physical distress, and can depend on context and meaning—not just how loud a sound is. A sound that is manageable in one situation may be difficult in another.

Commonly reported triggers include chewing, breathing, throat clearing, humming, tapping, typing, dripping water, pen clicking, and crinkling paper. This list is not a checklist for diagnosis: each person’s trigger pattern is individual. The Misophonia Consensus Committee’s 2022 Delphi study included 93 definitional statements that met its agreement threshold; at least 80% committee agreement was required for a statement to be included. These figures describe how the definition was developed, not how common misophonia is.
How to cope with misophonia triggers at home and work
Notice patterns before choosing an adjustment
For a short period, note which sounds and associated situations tend to cause distress, including the setting, time, activity, and people present. The goal is to find useful patterns—not to monitor every sound or assume another person is doing something wrong. A specific trigger may be more difficult during a particular activity or at a particular time of day.

Try sound supports selectively
The American Psychiatric Association’s patient and family article, published December 13, 2024, says: “Using sound protection, like earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, or listening to something that is pleasant or distracting, can also help.” These are possible coping supports, not treatments that work for everyone. Try an option in the situation where you need it and assess whether it helps you continue the activity.
- Earplugs: Consider them when reducing incoming sound is practical and still allows you to participate safely in the task or setting.
- Noise-canceling headphones: They may be an option where headphones are comfortable and compatible with work, conversation, and safety requirements.
- Pleasant or distracting audio: Background sound may make a trigger less prominent for some people, provided it does not interfere with the activity.
No source cited here compares these options or establishes that one is more effective. Consider whether a support helps with your particular trigger, lets you keep working or participating at home, is comfortable for its intended duration, and leaves room for flexible coping rather than becoming constant escape.

Make a plan for predictable situations at home
If meals or another shared activity reliably bring up distress, discuss a practical plan with the people involved. Depending on what works for everyone, that might mean choosing a different seat, agreeing on a brief pause, or trying background audio. Treat these as ideas to test, not universal solutions; the aim is to make participation more manageable without blaming anyone for an ordinary sound.
Adjust the work setting where possible
When a particular sound or setting makes work difficult, consider whether a quieter location, a planned break, or headphones during compatible tasks could help. Discuss changes with a manager or workplace contact if needed. Any arrangement should account for the work itself, including communication and safety requirements. These are practical applications of general coping guidance, not interventions shown to work for every employee.

Balance accommodations with participation
A quieter space, earplugs, or headphones can support functioning, but they should not automatically become the only long-term strategy or require withdrawing from ordinary activities. The International OCD Foundation cautions against treating avoidance as a treatment strategy. The University of Pennsylvania Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety describes a clinical program that addresses excessive escape and headphone or earplug use alongside coping skills and gradual, supported exposure. That is a description of its program, not a universal instruction to stop using accommodations; what is appropriate depends on the person and situation.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and related approaches are among the most described psychological approaches for misophonia, but the evidence should be interpreted cautiously. A 2026 scoping review by Detroy and Norena identified 30 CBT-family publications with pre- to post-treatment measurement and synthesized 14 in depth. The authors found that these approaches appeared feasible to deliver and were often associated with improvement, but most studies were uncontrolled, samples were small, and procedures and measures varied. They did not pool effects and concluded that the evidence is not strong enough for firm efficacy claims.
