How to Reduce Memory Use on a Raspberry Pi with Limited RAM

Use `available` memory to diagnose pressure, remove unnecessary workload, and skip the desktop on headless Pis. Learn when OS architecture or a higher-memory board makes sense.

To make a Raspberry Pi use less RAM, first check available memory with free -h, then close or remove unnecessary workloads. If the Pi does not need a local graphical desktop, boot to the command line or use Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Consider 32-bit OS only when it suits the board and applications; treat swap changes cautiously. If desktop work still exceeds capacity, a higher-memory Pi may be the practical fix.

Check whether the Pi is actually short of memory

Run free -h. Linux uses spare RAM for buffers and cache, so the free figure alone can make a healthy system look full. The available column is a better quick estimate of memory applications can use without swapping.

Then run htop and sort the process list by memory use. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine says htop is installed by default with Raspberry Pi OS, though installations can differ. Use the list to identify the programs or services consuming memory rather than guessing which system components to remove.

Reduce the workload before changing system settings

  • Close browser tabs and applications you are not using. The magazine’s Raspberry Pi 5 1GB example shows Chromium and Thonny adding memory pressure.
  • Review programs and services that start automatically, and investigate a specific item before stopping or uninstalling it. There is no universal safe list of services to disable; removing a service the project depends on can break functionality.
  • Check memory use again after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

For a headless project, run without the desktop

A graphical desktop consumes real memory even when you are not actively using a window. In the magazine’s Raspberry Pi 5 1GB example, desktop processes including labwc, Xwayland, wf-panel and pcmanfm --desktop are among the main memory users. The article reports that the interface takes up a third of available RAM in that particular desktop setup; this is an example, not a benchmark for every Pi or OS installation.

Switch an existing installation to CLI boot

  1. Open Raspberry Pi’s Control Centre or run sudo raspi-config.
  2. Find the installed menu’s System or Boot options and select a command-line/CLI boot option. Menu names vary by release, so use the labels shown on your system.
  3. Reboot for the change to take effect.

In the magazine’s Pi 5 1GB example, booting to CLI left 266MB used and 720MB available. Those figures describe that one configuration, not an expected result on other boards or installations.

Install Raspberry Pi OS Lite for a new headless setup

Raspberry Pi OS Lite is the official command-line-only edition and has no desktop environment. Raspberry Pi describes it for command-line uses such as headless servers and embedded systems. If you manage the Pi remotely, Raspberry Pi documents SSH access for Lite and headless systems: Raspberry Pi remote access documentation.

Choose 32-bit or 64-bit OS for compatibility, not as a guaranteed RAM fix

Raspberry Pi’s OS documentation says its 32-bit release uses less memory and may be a better fit for older models or software. The 64-bit release is intended for supported newer boards and can handle more RAM, with more compute available for suitable workloads. The sources do not establish a universal amount of memory saved by switching to 32-bit.

Before reinstalling or migrating, check that the board supports the chosen edition and that required applications and dependencies work with it. Architecture is a compatibility and workload decision, not a switch that benefits every Pi.

Use swap tuning only if you understand the trade-off

Swap uses storage as overflow when RAM is under pressure; it is not equivalent to physical memory and may be much slower. Lowering swappiness favors keeping pages in RAM rather than swapping, but that can leave too little room for applications and contribute to out-of-memory (OOM) failures.

The magazine gives 60 as its example swappiness value and shows 10 as a temporary change. Check the current value and, only if you have a measured reason, try the temporary setting:

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=10

The sysctl change is not permanent. The magazine specifically warns that changing swappiness risks OOM errors. It is not a blanket fix for a Pi that is running out of memory; reduce workload or remove the desktop first where possible.

When reducing software use is not enough

If you need a graphical desktop and its applications still strain a 1GB Raspberry Pi 5, software tuning may not make that workload comfortable. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine does not recommend the 1GB model for desktop computer use and suggests a 2GB-or-higher model for that purpose. That means choosing a different board; RAM is not an upgrade module for an existing Pi. The magazine does recommend the 1GB model for electronics and maker projects when the desktop is off and the system is used from the CLI.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Do not use total_mem to free RAM

Raspberry Pi documentation describes total_mem as a way to make a Pi limit the memory capacity it uses; its example makes a 4GB Pi 4B behave as though it had 1GB. That removes memory from the operating system’s available pool rather than freeing it, so it is for specialized testing or configuration—not an ordinary memory-saving measure. See the Raspberry Pi configuration documentation.
