Reduce voice-agent latency by finding where time accumulates—from connecting and carrying audio to deciding the user has finished, generating a response, and playing it. Then tune that chain for your client, network, and turn-taking policy. To make interruptions feel natural, detect a barge-in, stop the active response, and keep the conversation state aligned with the audio the user actually heard. There is no universal latency setting or end-to-end figure that guarantees a responsive experience.
Where voice latency comes from
Perceived latency is a chain, not a single model-speed number. A user may experience delay while a session connects, audio travels over the network, the system decides a turn is over, the model begins responding, or output reaches the speakers. Application-side buffering and tool calls can add more time. This breakdown is a practical way to investigate a system, not a published benchmark or standard decomposition.

- Connection setup: Time before the client can begin a usable session.
- Media transport: Time and variability as audio moves between client and service.
- Turn detection: The wait before the system concludes the user has finished speaking.
- Response onset: Time from the end of the user turn until the system begins producing a response.
- Playback: Time for generated audio to arrive and become audible.
- Application work: Additional buffering, tool execution, or client-side processing on the response path.
First audio—the moment the user hears the response begin—is useful to track, but it does not describe the whole interaction. A quick first sound followed by a long pause, a response that talks over the user, or a slow stop after barge-in can still make a system feel unresponsive.

Instrument the lifecycle of a voice turn so you can tell whether delay comes from setup, turn-taking, generation, transport, playback, or application work. The following is a suggested investigation checklist, not a prescribed OpenAI metric suite or set of universal thresholds.

- Record when the client starts connecting and when the session is ready to exchange audio.
- Record when user audio is sent and when turn detection closes that turn.
- Record when response output begins and when the client starts playing it.
- For barge-in, record when the interruption is detected, when playback stops, and how much queued output is discarded or reconciled.
- Compare percentiles and failure cases across client types, network conditions, and representative speech patterns rather than relying only on an average.
OpenAI’s server-controls guide recommends evaluating spoken response time alongside task success. That pairing matters: an aggressive turn policy can make replies start sooner while cutting users off, and a response that arrives quickly is not useful if it fails the task. Where relevant, also investigate connection time, media round-trip stability, packet loss, jitter, and interruption-to-stop behavior. Treat these as diagnostic dimensions, not a source-published universal scorecard.
Choose an architecture that avoids unnecessary handoffs
A streamed speech-to-speech session can pass audio through a direct voice-to-voice interaction, rather than waiting for a completed transcript, a separate text response, and then synthesized speech. OpenAI’s Realtime API documentation describes sessions that handle audio turns, tools, and interruptions. Fewer handoffs can remove stages from the response path, but do not assume that any architecture will be faster for every application; measure response onset and task performance on the actual flow.

| Approach | Potential timing characteristic | Useful when | Trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamed speech-to-speech | Can avoid waiting for separate transcription, text reasoning, and speech-synthesis handoffs. | Natural spoken conversation and direct audio interaction are central. | Measure response onset, task success, and whether the application needs transcript visibility or greater control over individual components. |
| Chained speech-to-text, text response, and text-to-speech | Has distinct stages whose timing can be measured and tuned separately. | Transcript control or choosing separate components is important to the product. | Account for the stages and handoffs in the end-to-end response path rather than measuring only text-model time. |
This is an architectural comparison, not a claim that one approach always wins. A chain may be the right choice when its control or transcript behavior serves the product; a direct audio path may suit applications where conversational flow is the priority.

Select transport for the client and network
Transport affects both session setup and ongoing media behavior. OpenAI’s Realtime guides document WebRTC for real-time client media and WebSocket for server connections. They differ in media handling, control-event handling, and who owns playback. Check the current Realtime documentation for supported configurations before implementation because API details can change.

| Option | Documented fit | Playback and media considerations | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebRTC | Real-time client media, such as browser or mobile applications. | WebRTC includes media mechanisms such as jitter buffering and quality feedback. OpenAI documents WARP as a connection-latency optimization option. For WebRTC and SIP, the documented output handling can be server-managed. | Connection setup, behavior on fluctuating networks, media stability, and the current supported setup for the client. |
| WebSocket | Server connections. | The client handles audio playback more directly; WebSocket implementations manage stopping playback and truncating unplayed assistant output client-side. | Connection behavior, control-event handling, and the application’s ability to manage playback and conversation state correctly. |
OpenAI’s engineering account describes WebRTC mechanisms including ICE for connectivity and NAT traversal, DTLS and SRTP for encryption, codec negotiation, RTCP quality control, and client-side echo cancellation and jitter buffering. It identifies low, stable media round-trip time, low jitter, and low packet loss as important to responsive turn-taking. These are factors to investigate, not a guarantee that changing one transport setting will fix a slow application.
Tune turn detection for natural speech
Voice activity detection (VAD) and turn detection determine when the system treats a user’s speech as finished. Waiting longer can give a person time to pause, use a filler, or trail off without having the turn closed prematurely; that wait can also delay the response. OpenAI’s client-events reference notes this responsiveness trade-off. Do not copy a threshold as if it were best for every language, environment, or product.

Test the policy using speech that resembles the actual use case. Include natural pauses, fillers, slow speech, short acknowledgments, background sound, and interruptions. Review both false turn closures and unnecessary waits: a configuration that behaves well for short, clear commands may not suit a conversation with longer pauses.
Make barge-in stop the response and reconcile state
Detecting that a user has begun speaking is only part of interruption handling. The active assistant response must stop, and the conversation state should reflect what was actually played—not audio that remained queued and unheard.

OpenAI documents automatic interruption handling when VAD is enabled. Its conversation guidance distinguishes output-buffer ownership: with WebRTC or SIP, the server-managed buffer can truncate unplayed audio; with WebSocket, the client must stop playback and handle truncation itself. The correct implementation therefore depends on the transport and who owns the output buffer. Test interruption-to-stop behavior, not just whether VAD detects speech.
Balance buffering against audible continuity
Buffering can absorb irregular audio arrival and smooth playback, but OpenAI’s server-controls guide cautions that “Buffering adds latency.” Keep only the buffering needed for the networks and devices your product supports, then assess the audible result and response delay together.
OpenAI’s engineering account also describes WebRTC handling for late-arriving audio: playback can stretch it slightly and briefly accelerate later audio to return to real time. That describes a transport behavior, not a measured performance result for a particular application. Test with the actual device and network conditions that matter to your users; reducing buffering without checking continuity can trade delay for choppy playback.

Use a deployment-specific optimization loop
- Establish a baseline: Capture the staged timings and task outcomes for each important client and network condition.
- Find the dominant delay or failure: Separate setup, turn-end waits, response onset, playback, and application work instead of attributing every slow turn to the model.
- Change one relevant part of the path: For example, examine a streaming architecture if handoffs dominate, transport if media is unstable, turn policy if closure waits dominate, or buffer ownership if barge-in stops late.
- Replay representative cases: Include ordinary turns, pauses, noisy conditions, and genuine interruptions; compare spoken response time and task success.
- Keep the trade-off visible: A change that improves one percentile or one client may harm continuity, interruption behavior, or another deployment environment.
OpenAI has not published a general end-to-end latency benchmark in the cited Realtime materials that can be treated as a target for every voice agent. Set acceptance criteria from the needs of your application and measured user experience, not from an unrelated demo or an assumed universal number.
