To reduce lag in OBS Studio, first identify where it appears: in OBS’s preview or recording, in the stream connection, or only in viewers’ playback. Those symptoms point to different causes. Choppy OBS output or an encoding-overload warning usually calls for reducing GPU and scene workload; a rising dropped-frames counter calls for network troubleshooting; viewer buffering with no OBS dropped frames may be on the audience or platform side.
Identify which kind of lag you have
Before changing settings, check OBS’s performance and connection indicators while the problem is happening. Note whether the preview or recording stutters, whether OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble, and whether the dropped-frames counter rises. OBS treats performance-related choppy output and connection-related dropped frames as separate problems.

| What you notice | What to check in OBS | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Preview or recording is choppy, or OBS reports encoding overload | Performance or encoding warnings | Free GPU capacity and reduce OBS workload. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting. |
| The live stream drops frames or the connection indicator is poor | Dropped-frames counter and connection status | Check bitrate, server, and network stability. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Confirm the dropped-frames counter is not increasing | Consider viewer connections, bitrate, and platform playback options. See OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting. |
A game that runs smoothly does not prove that OBS has enough GPU capacity. OBS still needs GPU time to composite and render the scene, so a game can feel fine while OBS struggles to keep up.
Fix choppy preview, recording, or encoding overload
Work through these adjustments one at a time. After each change, test the same scene and activity so you can tell whether it helped and avoid sacrificing quality unnecessarily.

Free GPU capacity for OBS
- Close other applications that are using the GPU heavily.
- If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If OBS still struggles, lower the game’s graphics settings to leave more GPU capacity for rendering the OBS scene.
- On Windows, try launching OBS with Run as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve some GPU capacity for OBS and may resolve GPU overload; it is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. The recommendation is specific to Windows.
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In Settings → Video, reduce the output resolution if OBS cannot keep up. This reduces encoder workload but also reduces output detail. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding; if 60 fps is unstable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. That reduces the amount of motion detail, so compare the result before deciding to keep it.
Simplify scenes and sources
Every source uses some resources, and some sources may continue using resources even while hidden. Temporarily disable costly sources, filters, or animated overlays to find out whether one is contributing to the problem.

- Use media and capture assets at a resolution appropriate for the final output rather than needlessly oversized files.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. For static graphics, use an image source where appropriate; use media or VLC sources for video or audio files.
- Apply filters to the smallest practical source, and deactivate sources with filters when they are not needed.
- Remove unused scenes or move them into a separate, focused scene collection if your collection has grown large.
Change the base canvas only as a last resort
Lowering the base (canvas) resolution can affect source positioning and asset management, so OBS does not recommend it as the first adjustment. If the system remains starved for GPU resources after the other steps, OBS’s documented approach is to create and switch to a new scene collection, change its canvas resolution, then reposition and resize its sources.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix dropped frames caused by the stream connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Lowering the game’s graphics settings does not address that connection problem; start with the stream settings and your network instead.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Try another ingest server: Open Settings → Stream and select a different server, then test the connection again.
- Lower the video bitrate: Open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate so it fits your stable upload capacity and the streaming service’s current limits. OBS’s 2024 guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: upload capacity can vary, and platform caps still apply.
- Check local network variables: Temporarily rule out a VPN, security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, or outdated network drivers. If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, test a wired connection.
- Review advanced connection options only if needed: OBS suggests checking network-optimization settings and TCP pacing on Windows, leaving Bind to IP at Default, and testing IPv4-only as a comparison. If IPv4-only does not help, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Use Dynamic Bitrate as a mitigation, not a repair: It can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS notes that this does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce video quality.
If dropped frames continue after these checks, contact your internet service provider with the times of the problem and the connection details you observed.

If OBS’s dropped-frames counter stays clear while some viewers experience buffering, the problem may be specific to their devices, locations, or network connections rather than the broadcaster’s connection. Bitrate and the streaming service’s playback options also affect whether viewers can watch smoothly.

When reaching viewers matters more than maximum output quality, consider lowering bitrate or stream quality and follow the platform’s current recommendations. This is especially relevant if the service does not offer transcoding options that let viewers choose a lower-quality stream.
