How to Reduce Input Lag on a TV Without Game Mode

A TV may offer low-latency controls apart from its Game Mode preset. Check the active HDMI input, consider ALLM’s picture-control trade-offs, and rule out signal or network problems.

You can sometimes reduce TV input lag without selecting a picture preset called Game Mode: check the active HDMI input for a separate low-latency control, such as Input Lag: Fast, a refresh-mode setting, or a picture-processing bypass. If your TV and console both support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), the console may also switch the TV automatically into a low-latency state. Names and availability depend on the TV model and signal; there is no universal setting or guaranteed millisecond improvement.

What “without Game Mode” can mean

Some people want faster response but prefer a different picture preset. Others want to avoid any low-latency state that changes picture processing. Those are not always the same thing: a TV may offer a low-latency control separately from its named picture modes, while ALLM can automatically put the display into a low-latency state that may function much like Game Mode.

Low latency can involve a picture trade-off. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains that a display may stop some processing when operating in low-latency mode, and can return to its prior behavior when the source stops signaling ALLM. Check for a low-latency setting on the active HDMI input

Start with the exact TV model and the HDMI port connected to the console or PC. Open that input’s picture, HDMI, or gaming settings and look for a control such as Input Lag, Fast, refresh mode, bypass, or low latency. The setting may be unavailable or fixed under certain signal or picture conditions, so use the manual for your specific model rather than assuming another model’s menu path applies.

Panasonic examples show why it is worth checking for controls beyond a preset named Game Mode. On listed supported models, its Game Control Board includes Input Lag, ALLM, 60 Hz Refresh Mode, and 4K 120 Hz Bypass Mode. Panasonic describes the 60 Hz option as reducing lag with 50/60 Hz game equipment, and the bypass mode as bypassing various picture processing. These are model-specific options, not universal TV settings. Panasonic’s supported-series overview

Panasonic Input Lag: Fast

In the cited Panasonic Z95-family manual, Input Lag offers Auto, Fast, or Normal. Panasonic describes Fast as suitable for fast-response game signals. The manual also notes that some conditions can fix Input Lag to Fast or make the setting unavailable. Treat this as an example of a vendor-specific control, not a recommendation to look for the same label on every TV. Panasonic Z95-family eHELP

Refresh and bypass options

Panasonic’s 60 Hz Refresh Mode is described as reducing input lag for 50/60 Hz game equipment. Its 4K 120 Hz Bypass Mode is intended for supported 4K/120 Hz gaming configurations and bypasses various picture processing. Availability and restrictions depend on the TV and input signal; consult the model’s manual before relying on either option.

Use ALLM only if you are comfortable with automatic switching

ALLM lets a compatible console, PC, or other source signal a compatible display to enter low-latency operation. The active connection and both devices must support the feature. Depending on the TV, ALLM can constrain manual picture adjustments or stop some processing. LG, for example, says that certain picture adjustments may be unavailable when ALLM is set to Auto. If you turn ALLM off to regain those controls, the automatic low-latency switching may no longer occur.

Menu instructions are model- and software-specific. LG’s guide covers its select TV models and illustrates connecting a console over HDMI and selecting the external input; it also includes a PS5 ALLM example. Verify the current console instructions if its menu has changed. LG’s ALLM and Game Optimizer guide

Roku likewise explains that a supported console with ALLM enabled can cause a compatible TV to switch into and out of its gaming mode automatically. The mode name is less important than what the setting actually does on your TV: if avoiding Game Mode means avoiding its low-latency behavior entirely, ALLM may not meet that preference. If the picture controls are right but response still feels slow

TV processing is only one possible source of perceived delay. Check the signal path and the game itself before buying a cable or changing unrelated settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the output is supported. Check that the console or PC’s selected resolution and frame rate are supported by the TV and the HDMI input in use.
  • Check cable capability against the signal. Replace a cable only if it cannot carry the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, or VRR features you intend to use. A cable that supports the required signal does not remove delay caused by the TV’s image processing; a premium cable by itself is not an input-lag fix.
  • Consider source-side enhancements. Optional image enhancements on a console may add delay. Check the console’s own guidance and compare with those features disabled if appropriate.
  • Separate online delay from display delay. An unstable connection can make online or cloud gaming feel delayed even when the TV is configured for low latency. VRR may reduce latency and stuttering in supported setups, but it does not fix an unstable internet connection.
