To save gasoline in the car you already own, start with free changes: accelerate and brake smoothly, keep to a moderate steady speed, avoid unnecessary idling, combine trips, and remove unused cargo. Then check tire pressure and follow the vehicle’s maintenance schedule. The amount you save depends on your car, route, weather, and current driving habits; published percentages are estimates, not guarantees.
What can you do right away without spending money?
Drive smoothly and anticipate traffic
Accelerate gradually, leave enough space to avoid repeated hard braking, and look ahead for traffic slowdowns. Rapid acceleration and braking waste fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said in 2022 that aggressive driving can reduce mileage by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic; the actual effect varies by vehicle and driving conditions. DOE’s driving-efficiency guidance gives those estimates.

Choose a safe, moderate speed
Does driving slower save gas? Generally, driving at a moderate speed rather than speeding does: fuel economy typically falls as speed rises, and DOE says it usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. Follow posted limits and traffic conditions; driving so slowly that you impede or endanger others is not a safe fuel-saving strategy. Older dollar-per-gallon examples in government guidance use past fuel prices and assumptions, so they should not be treated as a current estimate of what you will save.

Unnecessary idling burns fuel. DOE estimated in 2022 that an idling vehicle can use a quarter to a half gallon per hour, depending on engine size and air-conditioning use. The Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends switching off a personal vehicle when parked or stopped for more than 10 seconds, except in traffic. Follow local laws and your vehicle’s operating guidance, and never switch off in a situation where doing so could compromise safety or control. AFDC’s personal-vehicle idle-reduction guidance explains the recommendation.

Make fewer, more efficient trips
Combine errands and, where practical, carpool or use public transit. For a short journey, walking or cycling may be an option; working remotely can eliminate a commute when your job permits it. Choose alternatives that suit your route, accessibility needs, weather, and local transport options. DOE lists these approaches in its fuel-economy driving tips.
What should you remove from the car?
Take out heavy items you do not need and remove roof cargo when it is not in use. DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide estimates that an extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel economy by around 1%, with a larger effect on smaller vehicles. Aerodynamic drag from roof cargo can matter even more at higher speeds: a 2017 DOE fact sheet estimates that a large, blunt roof cargo box can reduce fuel economy by 10%–25% at interstate speeds of 65–75 mph. Effects depend on the vehicle, carrier, and speed; a rear-mounted carrier generally has a smaller effect than a roof box. See DOE’s Gas-Saving Tips fact sheet.

How do tires and maintenance affect gas mileage?
Check tire pressure when the tires are cold
Use the pressure specified on the driver-door placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Check when the tires are cold, before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. A basic pressure gauge can help you take the reading; the car’s placard or manual supplies the target. DOE reported in 2022 that correct inflation improves fuel economy by an average of 0.6%, and potentially up to 3%. That is an estimate, not a promised result for an individual car. DOE’s guidance on driving more efficiently covers tire pressure.
Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule
Keep up with the maintenance specified for your vehicle and have a suspected fault diagnosed rather than replacing parts speculatively. DOE’s 2022 guidance estimates that proper maintenance improves mileage by an average of 4%; a serious fault, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can have a much larger effect. The right service depends on the car and its condition. Consult the owner’s manual and a qualified repair professional when a warning light or change in performance indicates a problem. DOE’s maintenance guidance discusses the mileage estimate.

Should you buy premium gas or a mileage-boosting device?
Use the octane your vehicle requires
Check the owner’s manual or fuel-door label for the required octane. Most cars use regular octane, and using a higher octane than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Some vehicles have different requirements, so do not assume regular is right for every model. FTC guidance on stretching your gas dollars explains why to follow the vehicle’s specification.
Be skeptical of guaranteed mileage gains
A product promising dramatic fuel savings without clear evidence deserves caution. In a 2004 consumer alert, the FTC reported that the Environmental Protection Agency had tested more than 100 purported gas-saving devices: very few showed benefits, and some could damage engines or increase emissions. The FTC’s advice is to be wary of devices making large, guaranteed mileage claims. Read the FTC consumer alert on rising gas prices.

How can you tell whether a change is worth it?
Compare fuel used per trip, not just the price per gallon. Keep track of your usual route and fill-ups, then change one habit at a time where practical; results will reflect your own vehicle and conditions rather than a universal savings figure. Prioritize free steps before considering maintenance expenses, and weigh any larger change against safety, practicality, and your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Government estimates describe potential effects under stated conditions; they cannot establish one amount every driver will save at today’s pump prices.
