Start by checking whether the changing pixels actually come from animation. Happo says its Playwright integration automatically silences animations and waits for fonts and asynchronous assets. If you use Playwright’s own toHaveScreenshot() assertion, you can explicitly set animations: 'disabled'; for other moving content, stabilize the app state or narrowly exclude the volatile region. Use pixel-diff tolerance only for small rendering noise, not as a substitute for a repeatable screenshot.
First identify what is changing
Inspect the screenshot diff and the component that owns the changing pixels. A CSS animation, transition, or Web Animation may need different handling from a rotating ad, live timestamp, changing iframe, or application state that has not settled. Adding an arbitrary delay can simply capture a different point in the change; first decide which visual state the test is supposed to protect.

- If the expected image should show the completed animation, ensure the test reaches that state consistently.
- If animation is not part of the visual contract, disable it for the capture.
- If the variation comes from unrelated dynamic content, stabilize that content or target it with a screenshot-only stylesheet.
What Happo says it does automatically
Happo’s Playwright integration documentation says it automatically silences animations and waits for asynchronous assets and fonts. The public page does not specify how animation silencing is implemented or document a separate setting for it, so do not assume a configuration flag that is not documented there. The page displays version 18.19.0.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a Happo capture still flakes, check whether the diff comes from another dynamic region or from the test reaching an unintended UI state before concluding that animation handling is the cause. Happo also documents color-delta tolerance for minor visual noise such as compression and anti-aliasing; use it only after the intended visual state is repeatable.

Disable animations in a Playwright screenshot assertion
For a test using Playwright’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), make the behavior explicit:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ animations: 'disabled' });
Playwright documents animations as defaulting to 'disabled' for this assertion, with 'allow' available when animation should remain active. Stating the option in the test makes the intended capture behavior clear. Check the API and installed Playwright version if your project uses a different screenshot path; an assertion default does not establish the behavior of every capture method.

What “disabled” means
According to Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation, disabling animations fast-forwards finite animations to completion. That can fire a transitionend event. Infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot and played over afterward. Therefore, this setting is appropriate when the reference image should reflect the completed state; it may not produce the initial frame you want.

The same assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last screenshot with the expected image. That helps with transient rendering, but it is not a guarantee that application data or every visual state is stable.

Handle changing regions that are not animations
For dynamic or volatile elements that should not affect the visual assertion, Playwright supports a custom screenshot stylesheet. Its visual-comparisons guide demonstrates hiding iframes. The page screenshot API also supports inline stylesheet text that can hide or alter dynamic elements, including content in shadow DOM and inner frames. See the visual comparisons guide and the Page API for the relevant capture route and options.
Keep exclusions narrow: hide or alter only pixels that are deliberately outside the assertion. If a component’s appearance is part of the product’s visual contract, hiding it can conceal a genuine regression. When possible, prefer setting up deterministic application or test state so the screenshot still checks the intended content.

Use tolerance only for residual rendering noise
Once the desired frame is repeatable, a suitable diff tolerance can account for small artifacts such as image compression or anti-aliasing. Happo documents color-delta tolerance, and Playwright’s visual comparison guidance covers screenshot comparison configuration. Set a threshold appropriate to the project rather than increasing it until a flaky test passes: excessive tolerance can make real visual regressions disappear inside the accepted difference.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The diff shows an element at different animation frames. | The captured state is moving, or the capture route does not apply the setting you expected. | For Playwright toHaveScreenshot(), set animations: 'disabled' explicitly and verify that a completed animation is the desired reference. For Happo, its Playwright integration says it silences animations; investigate other changing content or application state. |
| The animation’s first frame is expected, but the screenshot shows its end state. | Playwright fast-forwards finite animations when animations are disabled. | Establish the intended initial state deterministically rather than relying on the disabled-animation screenshot to preserve an in-progress frame. |
| Only an iframe or live region changes. | The cause is a volatile region, not necessarily animation. | Stabilize the region or use a narrowly scoped screenshot stylesheet if it is outside the visual contract. |
| Small edge or compression differences remain after state is stable. | Minor rendering noise may remain. | Use an appropriately small tolerance; do not use it to mask large or moving differences. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling animations make every screenshot deterministic?
No. It addresses animation behavior in the relevant Playwright capture, not changing application data or other volatile page content.
