Reduce false positives by measuring alert quality on representative data, verifying each alert before suppressing it, and tuning only the narrowest useful rule or context. Then monitor false negatives and detection coverage alongside false alarms: a quieter queue is not an improvement if real threats are being missed.
Why false positives cannot be the only target
AI-assisted threat hunting can improve detection while also producing more false positives. NIST described that trade-off in 2024. Treat alert reduction as one part of detection quality—not a goal to optimize in isolation. A change that removes noise but also hides malicious activity has made detection worse.

There is no universal false-positive target that fits every environment. The acceptable balance depends on what the system monitors, the consequences of missed threats, the evidence available to analysts, and the workload created by alerts. Set operating thresholds with those costs in view rather than treating a model score as a security decision by itself.

Record alert outcomes and context
For each detection, track alert volume and disposition, along with the source, severity, entity type, and relevant environment segment. Keep enough detail to distinguish a change in detector behavior from a change in the underlying environment or telemetry. Use consistent disposition labels; unreliable labels can make later comparisons misleading.

Measure both kinds of error
On a labeled evaluation set, a false-positive rate measures the share of benign cases incorrectly flagged; a false-negative rate measures the share of actual threats not detected. Calculate both, and retain the underlying counts so a rate is not mistaken for the whole picture. Also examine alert volume and analyst workload: a lower rate alone does not say how much triage remains.
Check whether the evaluation represents deployment
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework says accuracy evaluation should consider false positives and false negatives, human-AI teaming, representative test sets, test methodology, and external validity. In practice, check that the evaluation data resembles the systems, users, telemetry, and operating conditions where the detector will run. Segment results where meaningful; an overall result can conceal weaker performance in a particular environment or entity group.

Validate each alert before suppressing it
Identify which detector generated the alert and inspect its evidence before changing its status or creating an exception. Microsoft Defender guidance advises determining whether an alert is accurate, a false positive, or benign before classification or suppression, and using response steps appropriate to the alert source.
These outcomes are not interchangeable. A false positive is an incorrect detection claim. A benign event may be accurately detected but expected or low-priority for the organization. A true-positive event still merits investigation or response according to its risk; suppressing it merely because it is familiar can hide a recurring threat.

Tune the narrowest useful part of the detection
Find where the noise originates
For a repeated benign pattern, determine whether the problem belongs in telemetry quality, detection logic, contextual enrichment, or a narrowly scoped tuning condition. Fixing the source can be safer than excluding every alert that resembles it. Base the change on confirmed outcomes and supporting context, not alert volume alone.
Limit exceptions to supported evidence and scope
Prefer an exception that applies only to the relevant evidence, entity, or condition, rather than disabling a broad rule. Define what is excluded and what remains covered, then check whether related detections can still identify suspicious behavior.

Microsoft Sentinel provides a product-specific example: its rule insights can surface entities correlated with incidents closed as false positives; an operator can exclude an entity or handle it in another rule. Microsoft Defender XDR documents tuning conditions based on evidence and notes that custom detections need fine-tuning. These are Microsoft product examples, not universal interface steps or instructions for other platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a feedback trail analysts can trust
For each disposition or tuning change, record the supporting evidence, alert outcome, exception scope, owner, review date, and downstream change. Use analyst labels as feedback only after checking that they are applied consistently and accurately; a mistaken classification can reinforce the wrong behavior. Microsoft’s documentation describes classifications and incident outcomes as useful inputs for improving alert quality, but it does not establish a universal governance schema.

Monitor after every material change
Recheck quality and operational impact
After tuning or a model update, reassess false-positive and false-negative rates, alert volumes, detection coverage, analyst workload, and results across relevant data segments. Compare them with the baseline using the same evaluation approach where possible. If quality worsens or coverage becomes uncertain, investigate the change and be prepared to revise or reverse it.
Look beyond the test set
NIST’s report published March 6, 2026, emphasizes deployed monitoring to check real-world reliability, unforeseen outputs, and unexpected consequences. A pre-deployment test cannot establish how a detector will behave under every production condition, so continue reviewing outcomes after release and when the environment changes.
Include adversarial robustness in the risk discussion
Machine-learning systems may face adversarial evasion, in which inputs are shaped to avoid detection, or poisoning, in which training data is manipulated. NIST’s adversarial-ML taxonomy identifies both categories. The available guidance does not establish a threat-detection-specific mitigation checklist, so assess these risks for the chosen system rather than assuming a generic control list is sufficient.

When comparing rules, models, or configurations, use the same representative conditions and ask:
- What are the false-positive and false-negative results, and what detection coverage is retained?
- How does performance vary across relevant data segments or changing conditions?
- Can analysts see the evidence and understand why an alert fired?
- Can tuning be scoped, audited, reviewed, and reversed?
- Are telemetry coverage and data quality sufficient for the detection to work as intended?
- How does the configuration affect analyst triage workload?
These questions make a lower alert count meaningful only when it comes with evidence that detection remains effective.
