How to Reduce Electricity Use During Peak-Demand Hours

Peak hours depend on your utility and tariff. Learn how to find the right window, shift flexible tasks, and avoid confusing lower peak demand with lower total electricity use.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by finding the peak hours and rate rules set by your electricity provider; there is no universal peak-hour schedule. Then move flexible tasks such as laundry, dishwashing, and EV charging outside those hours, and adjust heating, cooling, or water-heating use only when it is safe and practical. Shifting use can lower demand during the peak without reducing the electricity you use overall, and it does not guarantee a lower bill.

Find out what “peak hours” means on your plan

Peak hours may be a fixed time-of-use period, a changing price interval, or a special demand-response event announced by your utility. The schedule can vary by utility and season. Check your latest bill, online account, tariff sheet, or program alerts before changing routines. The U.S. Department of Energy explains the differences among time-of-use, real-time, day-ahead, and other time-variable pricing in its overview of demand-response and time-variable pricing.

Separate your everyday rate schedule from event notifications: an occasional critical-peak event may have different hours or terms from your usual peak period. If your plan has interval prices, use the prices for the specific intervals rather than assuming every weekday evening costs more.

Check the full rate, not just the off-peak price

Compare peak and off-peak energy prices, seasonal schedules, event-price exposure, and any demand or fixed charges. The Department of Energy’s guide to evaluating utility rate options distinguishes energy charges, usually based on kWh, from demand charges based on maximum kW and fixed charges. For a business or other customer with a demand charge, moving use may help only if it changes the measured billing peak; check the tariff for any applicable demand-charge look-back rules.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

Before switching plans, compare the complete schedule with your own interval usage if available. A lower off-peak price can come with a higher peak price, and fixed charges generally do not fall when you use less electricity. Whether a plan saves money depends on the tariff and when your household uses power.

Move flexible electricity use outside the peak

Once you know the applicable hours or price signal, start with tasks you can delay without affecting household needs. Shifting their timing can reduce coincident demand even when the same amount of electricity is used later.

Adjust heating, cooling, and water heating carefully

Heating, cooling, and water heating are common loads that utilities may include in demand-response programs. The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes utility conservation and demand-side programs, including controlled equipment and time-varying rates, in its energy-efficiency and conservation overview. Bonneville Power Administration also lists heating, cooling, and water heaters among potential demand-response loads in its demand-response overview.

If it suits your home, make a modest adjustment to heating, cooling, or water-heating timing during the relevant peak. Do not use a universal thermostat setting: protect health and comfort, food preservation, plumbing, and equipment requirements. If those needs leave little room to shift thermal loads, focus on other flexible uses instead.

Choose manual scheduling, automation, or a utility program

You do not need automation to participate. A reminder or a change in routine may be enough to move a load. Smart meters, appliance timers, scheduled thermostats, and utility programs can make coordination easier, but availability, eligibility, and compatibility differ by provider and equipment.

Ask your utility whether it offers a time-of-use rate, demand-response alerts, bill credits, rebates, or a load-control program. Confirm the event rules, enrollment requirements, compensation, equipment compatibility, and whether participation is voluntary. If a service requests access to meter data or control of equipment, review the consent and data-sharing terms. UK government guidance describes consumer choice and consent in its account of smart-meter-enabled flexibility and historical UK examples; those examples are not a general offer for other locations.

A smart thermostat is optional, not a prerequisite. If considering one for load shifting, verify that it works with your heating and cooling system and that your utility program supports the device before buying or enrolling.

Know whether you are cutting electricity or shifting it

Moving a washer cycle from peak to off-peak changes when electricity is used; it does not necessarily reduce total kWh. To reduce total consumption, use less energy overall or improve efficiency as well as shifting timing. The bill effect depends on your rate: moving use may change energy charges under time-variable pricing and may affect a demand charge if it changes the billed maximum, while fixed charges are generally unaffected by consumption.

There is no current, universal household savings figure for generic peak-hour advice. Historical figures illustrate specific programs, not an expected result for an individual home. For example, EIA’s 2019 article reported that ERCOT utility-run demand-response programs reduced peak demand by about 3.7% in 2017; that is a system/program result, not a household savings rate. UK government smart-meter guidance reports outcomes from the UK Power Networks Energywise/Bonus Time trial, including £3 to £111 a year (£37 on average) and a 1.5% reduction in evening peak demand, and cites customer behavior and system-benefit estimates tied to particular analyses. None of these figures predicts what your local tariff or program will do for you.

A practical order of operations

  1. Identify the signal: Read your tariff or utility alerts and note the actual peak window, season, and event rules.
  2. Review the bill structure: Check energy prices, demand charges if applicable, fixed charges, and interval-use data.
  3. Reschedule what is flexible: Move laundry, dishwashing, and EV charging to suitable off-peak times.
  4. Consider thermal loads: Make only safe, modest adjustments to heating, cooling, or water heating.
  5. Check local options: Ask about enrollment, credits, rebates, controls, consent, and program terms before changing rates or buying equipment.
