Reduce dust and corrosion by controlling particles and corrosive gases as separate problems: filter intake and recirculated air appropriately, limit indoor dust sources, inspect filters and equipment, and monitor gaseous corrosion with copper and silver coupons. Use coupon results and site conditions—not a generic humidity target—to decide whether chemical filtration or humidity changes are needed.
Control dust and corrosive gases separately
Dust and gaseous contamination require different controls. Particles can build up on equipment, interfere with cooling, and in some cases become conductive or corrosive. Gaseous pollutants can attack metal components, including copper and silver. Moisture, temperature, and the mixture of pollutants all affect corrosion.

Particle filters remove airborne particles; they do not establish control of corrosive gases. Gas-phase chemical filtration is a separate, targeted measure for identified gaseous contaminants. Select either kind of filtration to suit the site’s air quality, airflow, air-handling equipment, and installed IT—not by rating alone.

ASHRAE’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines For Data Centers calls for ISO Class 8 cleanliness and describes MERV 8 filters for continuous room-air filtration, with MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 for incoming air. These are general approaches, not universal design requirements; an air-side economizer and local conditions can change the appropriate choice.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Efficiency Filtration: MERV 11–15 (ASHRAE 52.2) captures dust, pollen, other fine particles for superior indoor air quality.
- Critical Environment Ready: Ideal for data centers, hospitals, cleanrooms, factories, and industrial HVAC systems where stable airflow and clean air are essential.
- Compact & Energy-Saving V-Bank Design: Mini pleat construction maximizes airflow, reduces pressure drop, and lowers HVAC fan energy consumption.
- Durable Frame & Stable Pleats: Lightweight ABS plastic frame with 20 mm header, while thermoplastic bead separators maintain pleat structure for consistent performance.
- Extended Service Life & Low Maintenance: Deep synthetic media minipleats increase dust-holding capacity, reduce replacement frequency, and lower operating costs.
Before changing filters, check the air handler’s permitted dimensions, airflow, and pressure-drop limits, along with the IT manufacturer’s requirements. A higher-rated filter is not automatically suitable if the system cannot accommodate its airflow resistance. For example, Supermicro’s 2026 system manual specifies MERV 11 or better for incoming air and MERV 8 or better for continuous room filtration. That is a product-specific example, not a rule for every data center.
| Control point | ASHRAE 2011 general approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming air | MERV 11, preferably MERV 13 | Site conditions, economizer configuration, air-handler limits, and equipment documentation |
| Continuous room-air filtration | MERV 8 | Airflow and pressure-drop compatibility with the installed system |
Reduce dust sources and inspect for buildup
ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline says, “Sources of dust inside data centers should be reduced.” Inspect air-handling filters and IT equipment for visible accumulation, and record how often filters need replacement. Those observations help reveal particulate loading and whether existing controls are working as intended.

The cited guidance does not set one cleaning schedule or name a universal cleaning chemical. Follow equipment-specific maintenance procedures; do not blow dust into equipment or apply cleaning chemicals near electronics without an approved procedure.
Monitor gaseous corrosion with coupons
Copper and silver coupons provide a practical way to assess corrosivity. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline describes exposing the coupons in the data center for about 30 days, then sending them to a laboratory to measure corrosion-product thickness. Place them at representative rack-inlet locations and account for local airflow: results depend on where and how the coupons are exposed.

- Versatile HVAC Replacement: Designed to replace bulky pocket filters, this deep-pleated ASHRAE cell box filter is available in 6" and 12" depths with frame options in GI, SS, AL, or MDF, fitting a wide range of commercial HVAC applications.
The 2023 ASHRAE Handbook, chapter 20, recommends coupon measurements at least twice a year—once in winter and once in summer—under its expanded guidance. Use a qualified laboratory and keep placement and exposure conditions consistent enough to make results useful for comparison.
ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline gives G1 targets of less than 300 Å/month for copper and less than 200 Å/month for silver, citing ISA-71.04. These are values from that dated guideline; apply current ASHRAE guidance and the relevant equipment requirements when setting facility limits.

- Ultrasonic Pocket Welding – Prevents leakage and media crowding while ensuring maximum airflow, efficiency, and consistent MERV 11–15 filtration.
- Tapered Bag Design – Optimized pocket design improves airflow distribution, energy efficiency, and filter service life in demanding HVAC systems.
- Rugged Header Construction – Durable metal or plastic header frame ensures a secure fit, easy installation, and long-term reliability in AHU systems.
- Commercial & Industrial Use – Ideal for hospitals, data centers, universities, cleanrooms, food processing, and commercial HVAC applications needing ASHRAE 241 compliance.
Investigate elevated results before changing humidity
If coupon results indicate elevated corrosion, look for the pollutant source and the route it takes into the room. Review nearby industrial and outdoor pollution, intake locations, humidification, cleaning practices, and other plausible contamination sources. Particle filtration alone will not resolve a gaseous-contamination problem.

ASHRAE’s 2020 RP-1755 research summary recommends chemical filtration to remove highly corrosive catalyst-type pollutants. Any gas-phase system or media should be selected for contaminants identified at the site and designed for the actual airflow. The same summary recommends extensive coupon testing or pollutant measurements during site selection.

Do not use one relative-humidity threshold as a universal corrosion setpoint. The 2023 ASHRAE Handbook links expanded humidity operation to coupon results: high corrosivity, or the absence of routine coupon testing, calls for more conservative humidity limits. In its discussion of RP-1755, ASHRAE reports that when both copper and silver corrosion are high, upper moisture should be below 60% RH and possibly below 50%. The summary also identifies increased copper corrosion at 80% RH at 21°C, regardless of pollutant composition, and says RH should not exceed 70% at 21°C in that context. These are study findings, not blanket operating limits for every facility; base humidity decisions on measured corrosion, site conditions, and applicable equipment guidance.
Quick Recap
Put the controls into a practical routine
- Confirm the air system’s constraints. Check filter dimensions, airflow, pressure drop, economizer configuration, and IT manufacturer requirements before selecting or upgrading particle filters.
- Track particulate loading. Inspect filters and equipment for buildup, and record filter replacement frequency as an operational indicator.
- Measure corrosion. Expose copper and silver coupons for about 30 days, use representative locations, and arrange laboratory analysis. Repeat at least twice a year in winter and summer under the 2023 Handbook guidance.
- Respond to the evidence. If corrosion is elevated, investigate contaminant sources and intake paths; consider chemical filtration for identified corrosive gases. Adjust humidity only with coupon results and relevant facility and equipment guidance in view.
