How to Reduce Diesel Generator Emissions at a Data Center

A practical guide to reducing diesel generator emissions at data centers, from tracking runtime and maintenance to evaluating DPF, DOC, and NOx controls.

Start by inventorying every generator and its permit, classification, fuel, controls, annual runtime, and operating purpose. Then cut avoidable operation without compromising backup readiness, maintain each engine and control system to its applicable requirements, use the fuel specified for that engine, and have a qualified emissions engineer assess any retrofit against the engine, exhaust conditions, duty cycle, and permit. There is no single emissions fix or operating-hour allowance that applies to every data center: engine details and state or local permit conditions determine what is required and what changes are allowed.

What to establish before changing a generator

Diesel stationary engines can emit nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC). A reduction plan should identify which pollutants matter at the site and which sources and operating conditions contribute to them. A control aimed at soot, for example, is not automatically a solution for NOx or every other pollutant.

Build a record for each engine rather than treating the data center’s generator fleet as one interchangeable source. Include:

  • Manufacturer, model, rated power or horsepower, and engine build and installation dates.
  • Whether the engine is classified as emergency or non-emergency, and the permit and rule category assigned to it.
  • Fuel specification, installed emissions-control devices, and any applicable operating or monitoring conditions.
  • Annual hours, separated by purpose: emergency operation, readiness testing, maintenance checks, and other operation.

EPA identifies stationary engines as common sources of primary or backup power at data centers. Its stationary-engine rule overview identifies federal requirements that may include the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for stationary compression-ignition engines in 40 CFR part 60, subpart IIII, and the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for stationary reciprocating internal combustion engines in 40 CFR part 63, subpart ZZZZ. Applicability depends on facts such as the engine’s date, power, source status, and use category. State and local agencies issue most air permits, which can add site-specific conditions. EPA’s summaries are a starting point, not a determination that a particular engine is covered or compliant.

How to reduce emissions in day-to-day operation

Reduce operation that is not needed

Review why each hour of operation occurs and avoid unnecessary running where doing so is consistent with the permit, the engine requirements, and the facility’s reliability plan. Schedule readiness tests and maintenance checks in accordance with those requirements, and record the purpose of each run. Do not apply a generic cap such as “100 hours” to every emergency generator: allowances and conditions vary by engine category and the purpose of operation.

EPA guidance has historically discussed a 500-hour default assumption for estimating potential emissions from emergency generators. That figure is an emissions-estimation assumption, not a general authorization to operate for 500 hours. Use the current rule text and the facility’s permit to determine allowed operation.

Maintain the engine and its controls

Follow the manufacturer’s written emissions-related instructions and the applicable compliance plan. Keep hour-meter, maintenance, and other records where the rule or permit requires them. Requirements can differ by engine class, power, source status, and emergency status; applicable categories may include testing, catalyst monitoring, notifications, and reporting. If a generator has after-treatment, follow its specified inspection and operating conditions, including any relevant temperature or pressure checks. A maintenance shortcut or control fault can undermine both emissions performance and backup reliability.

Confirm fuel requirements for the actual engine

Check fuel sulfur and other specifications against the engine manufacturer’s requirements, the applicable federal rule, and the site permit. EPA’s nonroad diesel fuel overview describes a maximum sulfur concentration of 15 parts per million for ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). That is a nonroad fuel specification, not a blanket statement of the fuel requirement for every stationary generator. EPA also explains that Tier 4 nonroad engine controls were designed as part of an integrated engine-and-fuel program; that context does not by itself establish a stationary engine’s legal fuel requirement.

  • PRECISE, ACCURATE SEAL: Constructed with heat-resistant plastisol with specially designed, pliable seals on the top and bottom walls
  • PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY: Embossed pleats and pleat stabilization beads help the filter trap more dirt, helping engines achieve maximum performance and last longer
  • MAINTENANCE: Engine air filters are critical to the life of an engine and should be regularly replaced as a part of routine maintenance; Refer to your owner's manual for the appropriate service interval
  • COMPATIBILITY NOTE: Verify vehicle fitment by entering vehicle information in the part finder stripe to ensure this is the correct filter for your vehicle

Fuel and exhaust after-treatment should be evaluated together. EPA’s 2004 analysis describes how sulfur can contribute to sulfate particulate matter across catalyst surfaces under some operating temperatures. Ask the engine manufacturer and control-system specialist to assess the specified fuel alongside any proposed filter or catalyst.

Which emissions controls could fit a diesel generator?

Choose a control for the pollutant and application at issue, not by headline percentage alone. The figures below describe EPA material for particular technology contexts; they are not guaranteed reductions for a data-center generator or a specific product.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) Primarily soot and particulate matter (PM) EPA’s verified retrofit list contains DPF entries for specified engine classes and ratings. EPA’s 2004 regulatory analysis reports greater than 90% elemental-carbon PM control in the CDPF test contexts it discusses; performance depended on engine and test conditions, and the analysis notes temperature and sulfur effects on total measured PM. Exact engine and retrofit-list applicability; exhaust temperature and load profile; backpressure; regeneration strategy; fuel sulfur; maintenance; permit conditions; and effects on emergency readiness.
Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) Some PM and gaseous pollutants EPA’s 2009 technical bulletin gives a 20–40% PM reduction range for diesel oxidation catalysts and includes stationary generator use among potential applications. This is historical general technology guidance, not a product guarantee. Compatibility with the engine and exhaust, the pollutant mix, operating temperature and duty cycle, fuel, maintenance needs, and applicable monitoring or permit requirements.
Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or another NOx control NOx The available EPA material does not support a generic SCR retrofit recommendation for a data-center standby engine. Engine-maker support, control-system design, exhaust-temperature window, reagent supply, diagnostics, maintenance, reliability during emergency operation, and permitting approval.

A technology’s appearance on EPA’s verified retrofit list applies to the listed engine and application, with its stated conditions; it is not blanket approval for a different generator or permit. Have an emissions engineer review the engine data, exhaust and duty cycle, and proposed device. Consult the engine manufacturer and permitting authority before specifying or installing a retrofit.

How to compare a retrofit with other ways to cut emissions

For a retrofit, fleet change, or planned expansion, compare options on the same operational basis. A device that reduces one pollutant under suitable conditions may introduce maintenance, temperature, backpressure, or fault-management requirements that matter to standby reliability.

  • Pollutant: Identify whether the objective is PM, NOx, CO, HC, SO2, or a defined combination.
  • Demonstrated application: Look for performance evidence for the same engine category and a comparable duty cycle, rather than relying on a broad technology claim.
  • Engine and exhaust fit: Verify model compatibility, exhaust temperature, backpressure, load profile, and any regeneration or reagent needs.
  • Reliability and service: Evaluate emergency operation, potential derate or control fault, inspection intervals, specialist service, downtime, and replacement parts.
  • Compliance work: Determine whether the change affects the permit or rule status, test method, monitoring, records, notifications, or reporting.
  • Lifecycle cost: Include installation, maintenance, fuel or reagent impacts, downtime, and the costs of maintaining reliable backup capacity.

During a planned replacement or expansion, also compare a newer certified engine, a different backup-power architecture, and storage that might reduce testing or short-duration generator use. Batteries, fuel cells, and other alternatives are engineering options, not universal substitutes: suitability depends on required backup duration, resilience design, permitting, and lifecycle analysis.

What changes under U.S. emergency orders?

EPA’s data-center resource, current as of October 2026, discusses Department of Energy emergency orders issued in spring and summer 2026. For stationary emergency engines subject to the cited rules, EPA says operation under those orders is treated as emergency operation and does not count toward certain non-emergency-hour allowances during the orders. This is a time- and order-specific interpretation, not a standing expansion of ordinary testing or demand-response allowances. Before relying on it, confirm the order, rule provision, engine coverage, and permit that apply at the time of operation.

Who should approve an emissions change?

Implementation requires site-specific facts that a general article cannot determine: the engine model and status, jurisdiction, permit, and proposed control or operating change. Bring the fleet inventory and operating records to the facility’s permitting authority, engine manufacturer, and a qualified air or emissions engineer. They can establish whether a proposed runtime change, fuel choice, or after-treatment system is allowed and technically suitable before it affects generator readiness.
