To reduce viewer delay on an encoder-based YouTube live stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to Stream Settings, and choose Low latency or Ultra-low latency according to how quickly you need to interact with viewers. Lower latency means a smaller playback buffer, so buffering is more likely if delivery conditions fluctuate. If the stream does not need live interaction, Normal latency is YouTube’s highest-quality, lowest-buffering option.
What YouTube means by live-stream delay
Latency is the time between a camera capturing an event and that event appearing for a viewer. The delay is not controlled by a single setting: the player’s read-ahead buffer is one important source, and network and delivery conditions can add delay. Reducing the buffer can make the stream feel more immediate, but leaves less room to absorb delivery fluctuations.
YouTube’s stated latency figures describe what most viewers may experience, not a guaranteed end-to-end delay for every viewer. The viewer’s connection and other delivery conditions matter too.
Choose a latency mode for the kind of interaction you need
| Mode | Best suited to | YouTube’s stated typical delay | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Streams without time-sensitive audience interaction | No specific time target stated in YouTube’s guidance | Highest-quality option with the lowest amount of viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls where an immediate reply is not necessary | Most viewers under 10 seconds | Buffering may occur more often; 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time audience conversation | Most viewers under five seconds | Higher buffering risk and more sensitivity to network ingestion problems; 4K is not supported. |
The typical-delay descriptions and trade-offs are from YouTube’s latency guidance; YouTube does not promise that every viewer will see the stream within those times.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Important exceptions
- 4K: YouTube does not offer Low or Ultra-low latency for 4K/2160p streams. Its encoder guidance says the low-latency optimization is unavailable at 4K; those streams use Normal latency.
- Webcam and mobile: YouTube configures these streams for interactivity, and their latency mode cannot be changed.
Change the latency setting in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Select the stream you are setting up or managing.
- Open Stream Settings.
- Under the latency option, choose Low for limited interaction or Ultra-low for real-time conversation. Leave it on Normal if interactivity is not important or reliability and image quality take priority.
- Test the choice with a representative stream before relying on it for an event, then monitor stream health and viewer playback.
YouTube’s current guidance does not set one universal delay target. Choose the lowest latency your audience interaction needs and your connection can sustain reliably.
Check the encoder and upload connection
Leave upload capacity beyond the stream bitrate
YouTube recommends keeping the total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Check upload speed specifically; download speed can be higher and does not show how much capacity is available for sending the stream. If you send both a primary and backup stream, account for their combined bitrate plus the recommended headroom. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee against congestion or interruptions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use appropriate encoder settings
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides recommendations by configuration.
- Test with movement and audio representative of the actual broadcast. A static test image or silent stream may not reveal problems that appear during the event.
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options in its encoder guidance. Its latency guidance notes that HEVC or AV1 can offer quality and stability at a given bitrate, but a codec change is not a substitute for a network that can sustain the selected bitrate. Confirm your encoder supports the intended codec and protocol before changing a working setup.
Troubleshoot delay, buffering, and instability
| What you notice | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers report a long delay despite a low-latency mode | Whether the correct stream and mode are selected, plus stream health and network conditions. | Confirm the setting in Stream Settings. Check encoder and upload stability; mode selection cannot eliminate delay introduced elsewhere in delivery. |
| Playback buffers more after switching to Low or Ultra-low | Available upload bandwidth relative to total outgoing bitrate, including any backup stream. | Run an upload-speed test, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check for congestion or bitrate fluctuations. If interaction does not require the shorter delay, use Normal latency. |
| Stream health reports problems or the stream becomes unstable | Whether bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, resolution, and frame rate match YouTube’s encoder guidance; whether the connection sustains the stream over time. | Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, verify the bitrate for the selected format, and repeat a representative test while monitoring stream health messages. |
| You cannot select Low or Ultra-low | Whether the stream is 4K/2160p, webcam-based, or mobile-based. | Low-latency modes are unavailable for 4K; webcam and mobile streams have no selectable latency mode. Use Normal latency where the format requires it. |
Lowering latency alone is not a fix for an unstable connection: a smaller player buffer makes delivery fluctuations more visible. Diagnose the connection and encoder configuration rather than treating the mode as a substitute for sufficient, steady upload capacity.
