To reduce CPU use in a 24/7 Indian music stream, first confirm that OBS is actually overloaded while encoding. Then simplify the scene, lower frame rate or resolution if needed, and adjust the x264 preset only if x264 is the encoder in use. Treat dropped frames with a yellow or red connection status as a possible network problem, not automatic proof of a CPU bottleneck.
Use the steps below to isolate the cause before changing settings or buying hardware. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are starting points; they do not guarantee that a particular Indian internet connection can sustain a stream continuously.

1. Identify what is using resources before changing settings
CPU encoding and scene rendering are separate workloads. OBS composes a scene using GPU resources, while x264 encodes video on the CPU. A demanding scene can cause rendering lag even when the CPU encoder is not the problem, and an unstable upload connection can drop frames without indicating either kind of overload.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Record a baseline
In OBS, open View > Stats and note the selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU use, rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames. Check YouTube’s stream health and any messages shown in the live control room. Record these values before making a change so you can tell whether it helped.

If OBS shows dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection status, investigate upload stability and bitrate. OBS identifies those indicators as possible signs that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. They are not, by themselves, evidence of CPU encoding overload: OBS Help Portal.
2. Simplify the OBS scene
For a music stream, the scene may need only album art, a background, and perhaps a visualizer. Remove work that does not materially improve the picture before changing hardware.
Reduce unnecessary sources and effects
- Remove unused sources rather than merely hiding them; some hidden sources may still use resources.
- Replace a static browser overlay with an image source when it does not need to update.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources, and avoid full-canvas media larger than the output needs.
- Disable or remove filters and animated effects that are not essential.
- Check whether a visualizer or animated background is creating substantially more motion than a static music image.
OBS notes that sources and scene complexity can add system load. Start with targeted changes to sources and effects; lowering the base canvas resolution can disrupt layout and is better reserved for cases where simpler adjustments are insufficient. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
3. Reduce output video work if encoding is still overloaded
If OBS reports encoding overload after the scene has been simplified, reduce the amount of video work. Lowering frame rate reduces the number of frames OBS must render and encode; reducing output resolution reduces the amount of image data per frame.
Try 30 fps before assuming 60 fps is necessary
If you are streaming at 60 fps and performance is insufficient, try 30 fps. OBS specifically recommends dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 is not working. For a largely static music stream, the smoother motion of 60 fps may not justify its extra workload. Keep the higher rate only if your visual content benefits from it and the system can sustain it.

Lower resolution if frame-rate changes are not enough
Reduce output resolution one step at a time, then check OBS’s encoding and rendering indicators and YouTube stream health. A lower resolution can reduce encoding work, but it also changes the picture viewers receive. Make changes to the output resolution before rebuilding the base canvas unless the scene layout itself is part of the bottleneck.
OBS’s performance guidance is available at obsproject.com/kb/encoding-performance-troubleshooting.
4. If you use x264, choose a preset that fits the CPU and connection
Check the encoder selected in OBS before changing an x264 setting. Preset advice applies only when the stream is using x264. A faster x264 preset uses less CPU, but is less compression-efficient; to achieve comparable appearance, it may need more bitrate. That trade-off can shift the problem from CPU load to upload capacity.
The right choice depends on the actual resolution, frame rate, motion in the scene, and stable upload capacity. OBS lists example veryfast starting ranges for low-to-medium motion: 3,000–5,000 kbps at 720p30 and 5,000–8,000 kbps at 1080p30. These are OBS starting points, not universal settings. For a YouTube stream, compare them with YouTube’s current guidance below and test the actual picture and connection rather than assuming one preset or bitrate is best. See OBS’s x264 streaming guide.
5. Set YouTube encoder parameters for a sustainable stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the codec and settings supported by your encoder, and make sure the selected bitrate is sustainable on your connection.

| Output | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | H.264 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 6 Mbps |

| 1080p30 | H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of your ISP or a promise of uninterrupted delivery. YouTube’s table also distinguishes minimum and recommended rates; consult the codec and resolution that match your setup in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen rate, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Test the actual stream before relying on it continuously
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a test that resembles the real broadcast, including its audio, motion, visualizer, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Observe OBS statistics and YouTube stream health long enough to see typical performance and network variation. A brief test that omits the moving scene or usual audio is not representative.
During the live stream, monitor stream health and OBS statistics. If encoding lag rises, revisit scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, or the x264 preset. If connection warnings and dropped frames appear without encoding overload, check whether the configured bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity or whether the connection is fluctuating. The official recommendations do not establish the music rights for any particular track, the reliability of a specific Indian provider, or local power continuity; those need separate checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Consider hardware encoding only after locating the bottleneck
Check the encoder options OBS offers for your existing GPU or integrated graphics. Hardware encoding may be worth testing if CPU encoding is demonstrably overloaded and a compatible encoder is available. Compare CPU load, image quality at the chosen bitrate, GPU capacity for OBS compositing, and stream stability during the same representative test.
OBS’s help guidance supports trying an available hardware encoder for recordings; that is not proof that a new graphics card is required for your live stream or that every hardware encoder will reduce total system load in your setup. Diagnose first, test available options, and consider new hardware only if the measured bottleneck remains and existing settings or hardware cannot meet your needs.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded music videos 24/7, StreamNeo can run that loop from the cloud rather than leaving OBS and a home computer running. The setup is:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from its cloud service.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
Common problems and what to check
OBS reports encoding overload
Check whether x264 is selected. Simplify sources and filters, then reduce frame rate or output resolution if needed. If x264 remains the bottleneck, test a faster preset while ensuring the connection can handle any bitrate increase needed for comparable image quality.
OBS reports rendering lag
Reduce scene complexity, animated browser elements, media dimensions, and unnecessary filters. Rendering lag concerns scene composition; changing the x264 preset alone may not fix it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Dropped frames appear with a yellow or red connection status
Check upload stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. Lower bitrate or video demands and run another representative test. Do not diagnose this as CPU overload based on dropped frames alone.
CPU improves, but the picture looks worse or the stream becomes unstable
A faster preset can be less compression-efficient, and reducing resolution or frame rate changes the delivered video. Compare settings at a bitrate your connection can maintain, then test both image quality and stream health rather than optimizing CPU use in isolation.
The stream works briefly but not reliably over time
Repeat a realistic test for long enough to observe typical system and network behavior. Watch both OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages; a short successful test does not establish that the setup will remain stable around the clock.
