If CPU use remains high, simplify the scene and lower output resolution or frame rate only as needed. Test a representative clip before leaving a stream running.
Check whether playback or encoding is using the CPU
Looping is a playback control; OBS documentation does not identify looping itself as a cause of high CPU use. The load may instead come from decoding the video, encoding the outgoing stream, or rendering a complex scene. In OBS, review the log and the selected encoder before changing settings. CPU use has no universal target: OBS says requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity.

Hardware decoding and hardware encoding are separate options. Decoding handles the source video; encoding prepares the stream sent to YouTube. They can rely on different GPU capabilities, and neither guarantees lower total system utilization.

Reduce playback-decoding work
Confirm the loop settings
- For one local file, open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled.
- For multiple clips, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
These settings control playback continuity; they do not directly change the outgoing stream encoder.

Try hardware decoding for a Media Source
- Open the Media Source properties.
- Enable Use hardware decoding when available if your GPU supports decoding that file type.
- Test playback and observe CPU use and stream behavior. If playback becomes unstable or the setting makes no useful difference, turn it off again.
This option may move video decoding work away from the CPU. It is not a guarantee of lower overall usage, and it is not the hardware encoder setting.
Move stream encoding off the CPU where supported
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Find the streaming encoder and select a supported hardware encoder instead of x264, if one is available for your GPU and operating system.
- Apply the change, then test the stream at the resolution, frame rate and bitrate you intend to use.
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync as hardware-encoding options, but compatibility depends on the hardware and operating system. A named encoder may not be available on every system. Hardware encoding shifts encoding work to a specialized GPU component; it does not ensure the GPU or the whole scene will be unstressed. Older hardware encoders can also deliver lower quality than software encoding with the default veryfast preset at the same bitrate, so compare the actual output rather than assuming quality is unchanged.

Simplify the scene before reducing stream quality
- Remove sources that are not needed during the loop.
- Disable or reduce costly filters.
- Simplify complex browser sources and overlays.
- Use a source video resolution appropriate for the stream output.
- If these changes are insufficient, reduce OBS output resolution or FPS and test again.
Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment matters. OBS describes encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity as interacting demands; there is no reliable fixed percentage of CPU savings to expect from a particular change.
Keep YouTube stream settings within its guidance
Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce the work OBS must do, but preserve settings suitable for the quality you need. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance specifies CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its suggested bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; use the applicable current row in YouTube’s table rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

A computer meeting OBS’s general system requirements is not necessarily powerful enough for every scene and stream configuration. OBS’s System Requirements page explains that workload varies with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. The Auto-Configuration Wizard can help select settings, but those settings still need a real test.
Test and diagnose before relying on a long loop
- Run the loop for a few minutes with representative motion and audio.
- Check OBS stats and logs for rendering or encoding lag, and check YouTube stream health for dropped or skipped frames.
- If CPU is high, revisit the selected encoder and playback decoding. If rendering or encoding lag persists, simplify sources and filters or reduce output work.
- Adjust only one variable at a time, then repeat the test and check both stream health and picture quality.
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health. A short test with the actual scene is more informative than an assumed CPU threshold.

When a hardware upgrade is worth considering
Consider a GPU only after trying the configuration changes above, and only if your existing system lacks a compatible hardware encoder or cannot handle the desired stream. Check compatibility with your operating system and OBS first; OBS’s general requirements do not guarantee performance for a particular workload. No specific GPU model is established as the right choice for every looping setup.
