First identify whether the load comes from video encoding, media decoding, or the scene itself. For one recording, use an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled; for a playlist, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled. Then simplify resource-heavy sources and, if x264 encoding is the bottleneck, test a compatible hardware encoder.
Find out what is using the CPU
Video looping and video encoding are separate jobs: the loop setting repeats a file, while the encoder prepares OBS’s output for streaming or recording. Decoding the source media and rendering the scene are other possible sources of work. Changing an encoder will not necessarily help if decoding or a complex scene is the real problem.
- Open OBS’s Stats window and note CPU use, rendering lag, and encoding lag during a representative run.
- If practical, compare a short run with the loop disabled against one with it enabled, then compare with streaming or recording active. Keep the same scene and output settings so the comparison is useful.
- Use the symptoms to guide the next test: high encoding lag points toward output encoding; high rendering lag suggests the scene or rendering workload; a CPU increase when playback starts may point toward media decoding. These are clues, not proof, so change one setting at a time.
There is no reliable universal percentage of CPU saved by any one setting. Results depend on the computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate, media, and scene.
Configure the loop for the type of service video
One prerecorded file
- In the OBS Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the recording file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop to repeat it. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents this control and the formats it supports.
A playlist of recordings
- Add a VLC Video source rather than a Media Source.
- Add the files in the desired order and enable Loop Playlist in the source properties.
- Install a compatible VLC version if OBS does not provide or recognize the VLC source. The playlist option depends on VLC.
Check how the source behaves when hidden or when switching scenes. If playback stops or resumes unexpectedly, make the source’s visibility and playback behavior part of your test. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video properties in its source guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Try hardware decoding for the media source
For a Media Source, open its properties and enable Use hardware decoding when available. This can move supported media decoding to the GPU, but it is conditional on the hardware and file format; it is not a guaranteed CPU reduction. Test the actual service video, including audio/video synchronization and playback stability, before relying on it live. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Reduce work in the scene
OBS sources consume resources, including sources that are not currently visible. Review the scene and collection used for the service rather than assuming hidden items are cost-free. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary scene complexity and using media sized appropriately for the output.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Remove unused and duplicated sources; simplify scenes and collections that are not needed during the service.
- Avoid oversized video or image files when they are only being scaled down for the stream.
- Reduce browser-source count and dimensions where possible. For static graphics, use an image source instead of a browser source when that meets the need.
- Keep the elements that matter for the congregation—such as readable lyrics and service details—and remove effects or visual layers that do not contribute.
Switch encoders only if x264 is the bottleneck
If OBS is using x264 and your measurements indicate encoding is consuming CPU, test a supported hardware encoder: NVENC for supported NVIDIA hardware, AMF for supported AMD hardware, or QSV for supported Intel hardware. In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the encoder options available on that computer. Names and availability vary by hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS installation.
OBS Project says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. The trade-off is image quality: older hardware encoder generations may deliver lower quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. Test a representative scene at the bitrate you intend to use and inspect lyrics, faces, and other fine detail before switching a live service. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guidance.

Right-size resolution and frame rate
Resolution and FPS affect the workload, but there is no single correct setting for every church stream. If CPU use remains high after simplifying the scene and checking the encoder, try a lower output resolution or frame rate and compare the result. Preserve enough detail for lyrics and service visuals to remain legible. OBS notes that CPU requirements depend on encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; its system requirements page does not establish settings for an unknown computer or stream.
When a hardware upgrade might help
Consider a GPU with an OBS-supported hardware encoder only after confirming that x264 encoding is the CPU bottleneck. Before buying, verify the exact GPU revision, operating-system and driver support, available case space and slot, and power-supply requirements. OBS lists NVIDIA GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series (Maxwell) or higher as NVENC examples and recommends sixth-generation NVENC (Turing), including GTX 1650 rev 2 and higher; that does not confirm compatibility with a particular church PC. Check OBS’s current hardware-encoding guidance and the computer’s specifications first.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded church service live on YouTube without leaving the church computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing the loop in OBS: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home or at the church computer once the cloud stream is running.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Common problems and fixes
- CPU remains high after enabling Loop: Loop repeats the file; it does not change the encoder. Check Stats and test decoding, scene complexity, and encoding separately.
- Hardware decoding makes no difference or playback breaks: The file format or computer may not support the option. Disable it if playback or synchronization becomes unreliable, then test other causes.
- VLC Video is missing: Install a compatible VLC version and restart OBS, then check the source list again.
- Hardware encoder is unavailable: Confirm that the computer has supported hardware and compatible drivers, then check the encoder options in OBS. Do not assume a GPU model or revision supports the needed encoder.
- The hardware-encoded picture looks worse: Compare at the intended bitrate. If detail suffers, use a different supported encoder, revisit output settings, or return to x264 if the computer can handle it.
- Rendering or encoding lag persists: Simplify sources first; then test reduced resolution or FPS while checking that lyrics and service visuals remain clear.
Copyright and YouTube readiness
Before looping a service recording publicly, confirm that the church has the rights or permissions needed for every song, video, image, and other media in it. A live format does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Check YouTube’s current requirements and any applicable licenses for the content and account. A practical review aid is StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
