Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a sequence of podcast files into a YouTube Live stream—but only if the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. The demuxer joins packet streams in order; it does not normalize episodes with different formats. Create a playlist script, check the inputs, then encode a consistent output profile for YouTube’s ingest settings.
What the concat demuxer does—and when it fits
The concat demuxer treats a text script as one virtual, sequential input. FFmpeg reads packets from each listed file in turn, so it can be useful when you want to avoid re-encoding already-compatible media. It is not the same as the concat protocol, which joins data at the file level.

FFmpeg requires the listed files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A video stream in one episode and no video stream in another, or mismatched audio layouts or codecs, can prevent clean concatenation. The demuxer does not fix resolution, aspect ratio, sample rate, channel layout, codec, or missing audio.

- Use the concat demuxer when each input has matching stream layout, codecs, and time bases, and avoiding re-encoding matters.
- Prepare normalized files first when the episodes differ but you still want to use the demuxer. Transcode them to compatible streams and settings, then create the playlist from those outputs.
- Use the concat filter when you need FFmpeg to re-encode and reconcile differing inputs. The filter is designed for a re-encoding workflow; it is not a drop-in promise that arbitrary assets will concatenate without preparation.
See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenation methods for the distinction between demuxer, filter, and protocol.

Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Check and prepare the podcast files
- Check your FFmpeg build. Run
ffmpeg -versionand use the FFmpeg tools installed on the machine that will stream. - Inspect every input. Use
ffprobeon each episode and compare the number and type of streams, codecs, time bases, and audio layout. Resolve differences before building a long playlist. - Check durations and timestamps. The demuxer shifts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and subsequent files follow the preceding file’s duration. Misreported or inaccurate durations can cause gaps or artifacts. A
durationdirective in the script can override a file’s reported duration; specifying durations for every file also enables seeking across the virtual concatenation. - Normalize incompatible inputs if needed. Create intermediate files with matching streams and compatible encoding settings, or use the concat filter when re-encoding is appropriate. Do not assume the demuxer will make a mixed-format episode library compatible.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation covers stream compatibility, script syntax, timestamp adjustment, durations, and safe mode.
Write the concat playlist
Create a UTF-8 plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat in the same directory as the episodes:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'
For automatic recognition of this format, put ffconcat version 1.0 exactly on the first line, with no byte-order mark or blank line before it. Each file line names one input, in playback order. Relative paths are convenient, but confirm how they resolve from the working directory of the FFmpeg process.

Paths, spaces, and safe mode
Follow FFmpeg’s concat script escaping and quoting rules for spaces and special characters. The concat demuxer’s safe option is enabled by default and rejects some paths. The example command below uses -safe 0 to relax that restriction; use it only with a playlist and media paths you control and trust. It is not a general fix for an invalid playlist.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
First create or open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the ingest URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the secure endpoint YouTube provides for your stream, and keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a stream password and provides a reset procedure if it is compromised. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings guide.
This is an illustrative starting pattern, not a tested or guaranteed command. Adapt it to your FFmpeg build, available encoders, source media, upload capacity, and YouTube’s current settings:

Match the video and audio settings to the stream
The example uses H.264 video at 30 fps, AAC stereo audio, and a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, -g 60 corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. As listed on the YouTube Help encoder settings page accessed October 3, 2026, H.264 at 1080p30 has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate; those figures are specific to that resolution and frame rate, not universal settings. The sample’s 4500k video bitrate is not a general recommendation.
YouTube lists 128 Kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate and 44.1 kHz as its listed stereo sample rate. Select the current bitrate range for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table before going live. Choose a feed your upload connection can sustain, leaving practical headroom for network variability.

When stream copy is appropriate
You can consider -c copy to avoid re-encoding only when the input streams and output container and ingest expectations are compatible. It does not bypass the concat demuxer’s same-stream, codec, and time-base requirements, and it is not a safe assumption for mixed podcast assets. YouTube’s current encoder requirements also apply to the resulting feed.
Preflight the playlist and YouTube event
- Run the exact playlist and command with representative files, including the first transition and any episode with a different duration or encoding history.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check that encoder preview appears and audio is present before starting the public event.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while live.
- Confirm upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate and allow headroom for variability.
- Set privacy, scheduling, and auto-start or auto-stop behavior in YouTube separately; these are platform controls, not concat-demuxer options.
- Keep a local copy of the playlist and source files, and verify the archived result. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm current platform behavior and account settings before relying on the archive as your only master.
Troubleshoot common concat and livestream problems
FFmpeg reports incompatible streams or fails at a transition
Compare the files’ stream count and layout, codecs, and time bases with ffprobe. Normalize the inputs to compatible streams or use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. Do not expect the demuxer to add a missing stream or convert formats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe playlist file is not recognized or a file cannot be opened
Check that the first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, without a preceding blank line or byte-order mark. Verify spelling, quoting and escaping, and the path relative to FFmpeg’s working directory. If a path is rejected by safe mode, only use -safe 0 for a playlist you trust.

There is a gap, timestamp jump, or artifact between episodes
Check whether the input durations are accurate and whether the files’ streams and time bases match. The demuxer chains timestamps using each file’s duration; a bad duration can shift later media. Correct the underlying media or use an explicit duration directive where appropriate.
YouTube does not show a preview, or reports stream health issues
Confirm the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that the key is still valid, and that FFmpeg is sending a supported output profile. Check the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check the upload connection and FFmpeg output for errors. Keep the key confidential; reset it through YouTube if exposed.
