To reduce CPU usage in OBS, check for a compatible hardware encoder first, simplify the scene, and then lower resolution or frame rate only if OBS still struggles. If you must use x264, try a faster preset and verify that the picture remains acceptable at your chosen bitrate. Test the actual stream in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for a continuous broadcast: there is no universal CPU target or preset that guarantees 24/7 stability.
1. Check whether OBS can use a hardware encoder
In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the encoder options for the output mode you use. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, select it and test it. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it shifts video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Available options depend on your computer, operating system and hardware; OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox with platform and hardware qualifications.

First check the GPU or integrated graphics already in your system and whether its driver is current. You do not need to assume that you must buy a graphics card. If the encoder is missing, confirm compatibility and update the relevant graphics driver, then reopen OBS and check the encoder list again. Older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality than newer ones at the same bitrate, so judge the actual output rather than assuming every hardware option is equivalent. See the OBS Project’s hardware encoding guidance.

If no suitable hardware encoder is available, select x264 and try a lower-CPU preset such as superfast or ultrafast in the encoder settings. Faster presets reduce CPU demand by using less computationally intensive compression, but they can also reduce compression efficiency: at the same bitrate, the result may look worse. Test the preset with your intended bitrate and the actual music visuals. OBS recommends testing settings on the target system rather than treating a preset as a universal fix. Its x264 settings guide explains the trade-offs.

2. Make the music scene cheaper to render
A 24/7 music stream often needs much less visual complexity than a gaming or camera scene. For static album art, use a still-image source rather than a needlessly demanding animated visual. Keep only the sources the scene needs, size images and other media close to their displayed dimensions, and avoid stacking large video files, multiple full-canvas browser sources and filters unless they serve a clear purpose.
- Remove unused sources and filters; apply a necessary filter only to the smallest relevant source.
- Check hidden sources too. OBS notes that some sources can continue consuming resources while hidden.
- Reduce oversized image or media dimensions to what the stream actually displays.
- If you use a browser-based visualizer, test it by itself and remove redundant browser layers or effects.
These changes reduce avoidable work, but the effect depends on the scene and computer. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers common load sources and remedies.

3. Reduce output demands only if the stream still struggles
If OBS continues to report performance trouble after you check the encoder and simplify the scene, reduce output resolution as appropriate for your audience and source material. If needed, lower the frame rate next; OBS suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. For static cover art, 60 fps may not add useful motion detail, so choose based on what viewers actually see and what your system can sustain.
Changing the base canvas is a more disruptive adjustment than lowering output resolution: it can require repositioning and resizing sources. Keep the canvas unchanged unless GPU resources are especially constrained and you are prepared to adjust the scene. YouTube transcodes live video into viewer formats, so your outgoing setting is not the only quality viewers can select.

Match OBS output to YouTube ingest guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to match a combination your system and upload connection can maintain. YouTube’s 2026 guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30; that is a video ingest recommendation, not a CPU setting. If your connection cannot sustain the target, choose a lower resolution or bitrate rather than expecting an encoder change to solve an upload bottleneck. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates for the current table and details.
4. Test the actual stream before leaving it running
- Use a starting point: In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts. Treat the result as a starting configuration, not a guarantee.
- Test the real scene: Run the stream with its actual music audio, artwork or visualizer, output settings and expected movement. A blank test scene will not reveal the workload of the finished broadcast.
- Watch OBS performance: Look for rendering or encoding lag indicators while the test runs. The relevant workload changes with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; the available evidence cannot establish an appropriate CPU percentage for every computer.
- Check YouTube stream health: Open YouTube Live Control Room and monitor the stream’s health as well as OBS. A stable local encode does not prove the upload connection is reliable.
OBS’s system requirements guidance explains why requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene. For a long-running setup, separately plan for power, cooling, internet continuity, restart and recovery, and the retention of any replay. The sources do not establish special CPU or network settings for India; test the actual computer and connection you will use.

5. Plan the replay separately for a 24-hour broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be automatically archived under that rule. If you need a replay, plan its capture and retention separately, and verify the current archive behavior in YouTube’s live streaming archive guidance.
