Bluetooth audio delay usually comes from a mismatch between the transmitter and headphones, an unintended audio mode, or a poor wireless connection. A USB-C transmitter alone cannot make ordinary Bluetooth headphones low-latency: both devices must support a compatible codec or gaming mode. Check that first, then work through the free connection fixes before replacing hardware.
Why Bluetooth audio lags during games
Game audio must travel from the console, computer, or phone through the USB-C transmitter and then be decoded and processed by the headphones. Delay can be introduced along that path. A transmitter can send audio using a low-latency codec only if the headphones support a compatible codec too; otherwise the connection may use a different available mode. Bluetooth version numbers such as 5.3 or 5.4 do not, by themselves, confirm support for a low-latency codec.

There are two useful possibilities to separate: the devices may be connected using a slower codec or ordinary Bluetooth audio mode, or the intended low-latency mode may be active but the wireless link is unstable. Codec compatibility and active mode are the first things to check; distance and interference are worth troubleshooting next. (See Avantree’s audio-lag troubleshooting guidance.)

If the devices do not share a low-latency mode, moving them closer or restarting them cannot add codec support. If they do share one but the connection is poor, replacing the headphones may be premature; proximity, nearby wireless equipment, or a connection to another paired device may be part of the problem. Work through both questions before deciding that the transmitter has failed.

Also distinguish codec latency from the total time between an on-screen action and the sound reaching your ears. A codec figure describes a particular part or configuration of the audio path, not every step in every game setup. The source device, transmitter, receiver, processing, and selected mode all matter. A low advertised codec figure is a useful clue when comparing compatible devices, but it is not a guarantee of a particular game-to-ear result.
Reduce delay in this order
- Identify both exact models. Find the transmitter and headphone or earbud model numbers, then check their specifications or manuals for a codec or dedicated low-latency gaming mode that both support. Do not assume a codec is supported because a product uses a recent Bluetooth version. Check the precise model rather than relying on a family name: support is model-specific, and the same general connection type does not establish that two products share a mode.
- Check which mode is active. Look at the transmitter’s status light or display and use its manual to interpret the indicator. Indicator meanings differ between models. If the transmitter has a selectable gaming or low-latency mode, confirm that it is enabled rather than assuming it activates automatically. A light can tell you something only when you know the meaning assigned to it by that transmitter’s manufacturer; do not interpret an unfamiliar indicator by analogy with another product.
- Stop other devices from taking the headphones. Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, or computers previously paired with the headphones. A previously paired device may connect automatically and interfere with the intended pairing. For a clean test, make sure the headphones are paired directly to the USB-C transmitter, not to another device that is also handling or redirecting the audio.
- Improve the radio link. Place the headphones close to the transmitter and move them away from Wi-Fi routers, other Bluetooth devices, wireless equipment, and large obstacles. Retest after moving them so you can tell whether the connection conditions made a difference. Change one thing at a time where practical; otherwise, if the delay changes, you will not know whether it was the distance, an obstacle, or nearby wireless equipment that mattered.
- Restart and pair directly again. Restart the transmitter and headphones, then pair the headphones directly with the transmitter. Avoid routing audio through another Bluetooth device during the test. A fresh direct pairing helps make sure you are testing the intended two-device connection rather than a remembered connection to a phone, computer, or other nearby device.
- Retest before buying anything. Try the same game and setup after each change. If delay persists, recheck the active mode and the compatibility of both devices. If they lack a compatible low-latency mode, a setting change cannot make them use one. Keep the game and listening arrangement consistent between checks so the results are easier to compare; do not treat a single change in perceived delay as proof of a specific codec unless the transmitter’s indicator or documentation confirms it.
A useful way to interpret the results is to ask what the test has established. If the devices do not list a common low-latency mode, the primary issue is compatibility, and the remedy is a compatible pair or a different audio connection. If they do list a shared mode but the transmitter does not indicate that it is active, investigate mode selection, pairing, and the manual before replacing anything. If the mode is active and the delay varies as you move closer or remove nearby wireless equipment, the connection environment is worth addressing. These checks do not prove every cause, but they help avoid treating every delay as a defective transmitter.
What the codec figures do—and do not—tell you
Codec latency figures are useful for orientation, not a promise of the delay you will experience from a game to your ears. They may describe only one part of the audio path, and real end-to-end delay depends on the source, transmitter, receiver, processing, and active mode. Qualcomm says aptX Low Latency has approximately 40 ms latency when achieved from an audio adapter running its aptX Low Latency encoder; that is not a universal measurement of total gaming delay. Qualcomm’s aptX Low Latency page describes the figure as helping synchronize audio and visuals.
Avantree publishes the following approximate codec figures. They are vendor estimates, not independent comparative measurements or guaranteed results for every device pairing. Avantree’s codec guidance notes that actual performance depends on the connected devices and mode.
| Codec or mode | Approximate latency in Avantree’s guidance |
|---|---|
| aptX HD | 250 ms or more |
| aptX Low Latency | About 40 ms |
| aptX | About 70 ms |
| aptX Adaptive | 50–80 ms |
| FastStream | About 40 ms |
| SBC | About 220 ms |
| LE Audio LC3 | About 50 ms |
| LE Audio aptX Lite | About 25 ms |
| LE Audio Auracast | 50–120 ms |
The figures help explain why the exact active mode matters: the vendor’s estimates vary substantially across the listed options. They should not be read as a universal league table. The numbers come from Avantree’s guidance, while Qualcomm’s approximately 40 ms statement is scoped to an audio adapter running the aptX Low Latency encoder. Neither source establishes the total latency for every game, host platform, transmitter, and headphone combination. Do not assume that a codec with a lower listed estimate will be available on your hardware or will produce that result in your complete setup.

FastStream may be relevant when voice chat matters: Avantree says it has latency about the same as aptX Low Latency and may provide better audio quality when using the headphone microphone. Treat that as vendor guidance, and verify that both devices support FastStream. Codec support and microphone behavior are separate compatibility questions. If chat is important, check both playback mode and microphone handling in the product information rather than concluding from a low-latency playback claim that the microphone will work as expected.
These specifications are more useful as questions to ask than as standalone buying promises. Does the transmitter support the mode? Do the headphones support the same mode? Can the intended console, computer, or phone use the transmitter’s USB-C audio interface? Can you select or verify the mode? If any answer is unclear, check the current manual or manufacturer listing before relying on the headline latency figure.

Check platform and headset compatibility before replacing a transmitter
A transmitter must work with the USB-C audio interface on the console, computer, or phone as well as with the headphones’ codec. Support is model-specific: a device’s USB-C plug does not establish that every platform will recognize it or expose the same features. Check the manufacturer’s current product information and manual for the exact host platform, supported codecs, and how to select or identify a gaming mode.
For example, Qualcomm’s product listing identifies the Avantree C51 as a Type-C aptX Low Latency transmitter for Nintendo Switch. That makes it an example to investigate for that platform, not proof that every headphone will connect using aptX Low Latency. The headphones still need compatible support. See the Qualcomm listing for the Avantree C51.
Sennheiser lists the BTD 700 for USB-A and USB-C use and names Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 or later, iOS, Android 13 or later, PS4, and PS5 among supported platforms. Sennheiser claims its dedicated gaming mode reaches 30 ms. This is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently measured end-to-end result for every platform and headset. Check the current regional listing and confirm that your headphones support the mode you intend to use. See the Sennheiser BTD 700 product page.

The two examples illustrate why platform support and codec support are separate checks. A listing for a platform tells you where the manufacturer says the transmitter can be used; it does not say that every Bluetooth headphone connected to it will use its lowest-latency mode. Likewise, a headphone’s codec list does not establish that a given console or phone will accept a particular USB-C transmitter. Confirm all three parts of the chain: the host supports the transmitter, the transmitter supports the desired mode, and the receiver supports that same mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManufacturer claims should be compared on equal terms. Qualcomm’s approximate 40 ms statement is tied to an adapter running the aptX Low Latency encoder. Sennheiser’s 30 ms figure is a claim for the BTD 700’s dedicated gaming mode. Neither figure is an independent side-by-side test across the same source, game, headset, and measurement method. There is no comparable independent measurement for these products, so do not use the numbers to declare one setup universally faster than another.
When to change the headphones or audio setup
If both devices lack a shared low-latency codec or mode, replacing only the transmitter may not solve the problem. Choose a transmitter and receiver as a compatible pair, and confirm that the intended host platform supports the transmitter’s USB-C audio connection. If voice chat is important, also check how the setup handles the headphone microphone; low-latency playback support alone does not establish microphone support.
Before buying, write down the exact transmitter and headphone models and compare their supported modes rather than shopping by Bluetooth version or by a product’s generic “low latency” wording. Verify whether gaming mode is automatic or must be selected, how the active mode is shown, and whether the host platform appears in the current compatibility information. If a manufacturer gives a latency number, note what it actually describes and treat it as a manufacturer claim unless independent measurements for your specific setup are available.
When a compatible mode is unavailable or the remaining delay is still distracting, wired headphones are a practical alternative. A purpose-built gaming headset and its matching dongle are another option to investigate. Neither option has a universal latency advantage established for every device and game here, so verify the specific connection and product claims rather than assuming a category guarantees a result. No comparable prices or a cost range are published here, so a useful cost comparison requires checking current prices for the particular products you are considering.

There is no need to replace hardware just because the first test still sounds delayed. First confirm the mode and direct pairing, then repeat the test close to the transmitter and away from the wireless equipment mentioned above. If the setup still lacks a shared low-latency option, hardware compatibility—not a distance adjustment—is the issue to address. If both devices support the desired mode but the result remains unsatisfactory, compare alternative setups using the host support, receiver support, mode-selection details, microphone needs, and clearly scoped manufacturer claims.

Avantree’s support page states that AirPods do not support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive. Do not expect a generic Bluetooth transmitter to eliminate delay with AirPods by sending one of those codecs. Check the exact connection method and supported mode for the AirPods and transmitter you plan to use; if they do not share a low-latency mode, use the setup fixes above to rule out connection issues, then consider a different audio connection if the delay remains unacceptable.
This is a specific compatibility caution, not a claim that every AirPods connection behaves identically or that every transmitter is incompatible with them. The point is that an aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive transmitter cannot make AirPods support a mode they do not support. Check the current documentation for the exact devices and connection method, and avoid treating a transmitter’s codec label as a guarantee about the receiver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a USB-C Bluetooth transmitter by itself eliminate gaming audio delay?
No. The transmitter cannot force ordinary headphones to use a codec they do not support. Both transmitter and headphones need a compatible low-latency codec or gaming mode, and the host platform must support the transmitter’s USB-C audio connection.
Does Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 mean my headphones have low-latency audio?
No. Bluetooth version numbers alone do not confirm codec compatibility or a low-latency mode. Check the exact transmitter and headphone specifications or manuals.

How do I know which codec or mode is active?
Check the transmitter’s status light or display and use that model’s manual to interpret it. Indicator meanings differ, so do not assume a color or pattern means the same thing across products.
What should I try before replacing my transmitter or headphones?
Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices previously paired to the headphones, keep the headphones close to the transmitter and away from routers and other wireless equipment, restart both devices, and pair the headphones directly to the transmitter. Recheck the active mode and test after each change.
Is aptX Low Latency always 40 ms from game to headphones?
No. Qualcomm describes approximately 40 ms for an audio adapter running its aptX Low Latency encoder. That is not a universal end-to-end gaming measurement; the source, transmitter, receiver, processing, and active mode affect the overall path.
Will an aptX Low Latency transmitter remove delay with AirPods?
Do not assume so. Avantree states that AirPods do not support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive. Verify the exact connection method and supported mode rather than expecting a generic transmitter to add that codec support.
Are the Sennheiser BTD 700’s 30 ms and aptX Low Latency’s 40 ms claims directly comparable?
Not from the information here. Sennheiser claims 30 ms for the BTD 700’s dedicated gaming mode, while Qualcomm’s approximately 40 ms figure is scoped to an adapter running the aptX Low Latency encoder. Neither is a comparable independent measurement across the same devices and game.
Should I switch to wired headphones if Bluetooth still lags?
Wired headphones are a practical alternative when no suitable low-latency mode is available or the delay remains distracting. A purpose-built gaming headset and matching dongle are another option. The available sources do not establish a universal latency advantage for either alternative, so check the specific setup.
The Bottom Line
Start by checking whether your exact USB-C transmitter and headphones share a low-latency mode, then confirm that it is active. Next, rule out auto-connection, distance, and nearby wireless interference with direct pairing and close-range tests. Replace hardware only after checking the host platform and receiver compatibility; latency figures and product claims are useful clues, not universal end-to-end guarantees.
