If a new Android phone is draining quickly, start by checking which apps are using battery, then adjust their background activity and reduce screen use or other sustained workloads. Some extra drain can be temporary while a phone finishes setup or installs an update, but persistent unusual drain deserves troubleshooting.
1. Find what is using the battery
Check the phone’s Battery or Battery usage screen before changing several settings at once. It can help distinguish an app that is using power while open from one doing substantial work in the background. Menu names and paths differ by Android version and manufacturer; Google’s Android battery guidance notes that battery life and settings vary by device.

If one app stands out, review its background-use or battery-optimization setting. Restrict background activity for apps that do not need to update or send notifications continuously. Avoid restricting apps whose timely alerts or connected features matter to you.

On Pixel phones, Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled. These features can limit background activity for apps you use less often. A new phone may need time to learn your usage, so the benefit might not be immediate. Other Android brands may use different names or controls; check your manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the Pixel path applies.

3. Reduce screen use
The display is a practical place to cut power use, especially if it is bright or stays on when you are not looking at it.
- Lower brightness or use automatic brightness if it suits your environment.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
- Consider dark theme; its effect depends on the phone’s display and settings.
4. Limit sustained activity and unnecessary connections
Navigation, video streaming, gaming, camera use, hotspot/tethering, and prolonged location or mobile-data use can keep the phone working steadily. When you need to conserve power, reduce or pause these activities where practical, and turn off a hotspot when finished.

Wi-Fi may use less battery than mobile data in some situations. You can also turn off Bluetooth or Location access when you do not need them, but first consider what depends on them: navigation, paired accessories, location-aware apps, and other connected features may stop working or become less useful. These controls are reversible, so use them selectively rather than disabling everything by default.
5. Use Battery Saver when you need extra time
Battery Saver can limit or pause background activity and may reduce visual effects or affect network behavior. As a result, some app notifications or updates may arrive later, and some functions may be limited. Turn it on when extending the remaining charge matters more than having every app update immediately; switch it off when those trade-offs are no longer worthwhile. The precise behavior varies by phone.

6. Allow for setup and update work
A new phone may use more battery during setup and as apps and software settle. For Pixel phones specifically, Google Pixel Help says: “When you set up a new device or after a factory reset, optimization may take up a few weeks to take full effect.” Google also notes that drain can temporarily rise after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. These are Pixel-specific expectations, not a timing guarantee for every Android phone. If unusual drain remains after a few days, Google advises seeking help.
7. Troubleshoot drain that continues
- Restart the phone.
- Check for and install Android system updates.
- Update apps, then review Battery usage again for unusually high app or background use.
- Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier if the problem continues. Google’s Pixel battery-drain troubleshooting includes battery-use checks and describes diagnostics available on Pixel 6 and later.
- Consider a factory reset only as a last resort. It removes local data and apps, so back up important information first and follow the device maker’s reset instructions.
Protect the battery while charging
Heat can increase battery drain and harm the battery. Avoid leaving the phone in hot conditions, especially while it is fully charged. Google’s general Android battery advice also says you do not need to run the battery from full to zero and back to teach it its capacity. Follow the phone maker’s charging guidance and use the supplied adapter as directed; buying a different charger is not a battery-drain fix established by that advice.
