Start by preventing noise in the room
Record in the quietest practical room. Turn off nearby fans, air conditioning, or other humming devices when you can, and close windows if outdoor noise is getting in. A refrigerator or other appliance may be difficult to switch off safely or conveniently; if so, try recording farther from it or at a quieter time.

Soft furnishings such as curtains and carpet can reduce reflections and echo, but they do not block all outside sound. If the problem is a distinct sound entering the room, address that source where possible rather than expecting furnishings to remove it.

Use monitoring headphones to hear the recording without sending computer playback into the microphone. Headphones do not keep ambient room noise out of the recording.

Place the microphone for the ASMR sound
A microphone closer to the intended sound generally captures more of it relative to the room. Find a repeatable distance that works for the particular trigger and microphone; a distance suited to ordinary speech is not automatically right for a whisper, brushing, or tapping. If close placement makes a sound overly bass-heavy, captures breaths or handling noise, or changes the trigger unnaturally, adjust the position.
A boom arm can help keep the microphone in a consistent position near the source. It does not remove environmental noise by itself.

Set input level while performing the actual trigger
Monitor the input while whispering or making the quiet sound you plan to record. Setting gain with normal speech can give a misleading level for a much quieter performance. Leave headroom so louder moments do not clip, and avoid recording so quietly that you need to raise the entire signal substantially afterward: raising a quiet recording also raises its room noise.

Audacity gives peak levels between −18 dB and −6 dB as general guidance for normal speech. That range is not a universal target for ASMR triggers; use it as context, not a setting to apply mechanically.

Choose a fix that matches the noise

Changing traffic, crowd chatter, and background music are not steady noise, so a profile made from one quiet section may not address them well. Prioritize source control or consider a tool suited to changing noise rather than applying stronger reduction indiscriminately.
Use Audacity noise reduction cautiously
Audacity’s profile-based workflow is a two-pass process: identify a short section of noise alone, then apply reduction to the audio you want to clean. The sample must not contain a wanted whisper, breath, or trigger, or the software may treat that sound as noise.

- Record room tone: Capture a few seconds with the background sound present and no wanted performance. Use this only when the noise is reasonably steady.
- Get a noise profile: Select the noise-only section and choose “Get noise profile” in Audacity’s Noise Reduction effect.
- Select the audio to clean: Select the intended region or recording, then apply Noise Reduction.
- Audition and adjust: Listen to quiet details and pauses. Reduce the processing if the result sounds metallic, watery, or stripped of whisper or trigger detail.
Audacity lists defaults of 6 dB for noise reduction, 6 for sensitivity, and 6 bands for frequency smoothing. These are software defaults, not proven ideal settings for ASMR. The right amount depends on the recording and the noise; more reduction is not necessarily better.
Use a gate only for the gaps it can handle
A noise gate lowers or mutes sound below a threshold. It can make pauses quieter, but a quiet ASMR sound may sit near that threshold, and noise occurring underneath the sound will remain. Aggressive gating can make ambience surge between open and closed moments. If the recording is noisy during the whisper or trigger itself, address the source or use a suitable noise-reduction approach instead of expecting a gate to solve it.

Check the quietest parts before finishing
Listen through headphones at a realistic listening level, paying particular attention to the softest triggers and the transitions into and out of pauses. Keep enough room ambience for the result to sound natural, and stop processing when further reduction starts to damage wanted detail. There is no universal noise-floor threshold established for ASMR recordings, so judge the result by clarity and naturalness rather than chasing a particular number.
