Start by selecting the microphone you mean to use, then turn on your meeting app’s speech-focused noise control and test it with the sounds in your room. These free adjustments often address typing, fans, echo, and nearby noise; if the microphone still sounds distant, a headset with a close-positioned mic is an optional next step.
1. Check the microphone before changing noise settings
A meeting app may be listening to a laptop, webcam, or headset microphone you did not intend to use. In the app’s audio or device settings, select the intended microphone and use its test or preview feature if available. Microsoft Teams, for example, lets you choose a primary microphone and make a test call in device settings: Manage your device settings in Microsoft Teams.

Say a few sentences at your normal meeting volume and listen to the playback or ask someone to confirm what they hear. This helps distinguish a noisy room from a microphone that is simply too far away or pointed in the wrong direction.

2. Turn on the meeting app’s noise control
Use the app’s speech-oriented processing first; the control names and availability can change by platform, client, or organization settings.

Zoom
Zoom says its normal meeting audio uses noise suppression and echo cancellation. During a meeting, its audio controls include Noise removal and Personalized audio isolation. The latter uses a voiceprint and is optional. See Changing audio settings during a Zoom meeting for the current controls.
Microsoft Teams
In device settings, Teams offers Noise suppression and Voice isolation, alongside microphone selection and a test call. Voice isolation requires setting up a voice profile. Details are in Microsoft’s device settings guide and Voice isolation in Teams calls and meetings.

Google Meet
Meet’s Noise cancellation setting is available before or during a meeting. Google lists typing, a closing door, room echo, and construction among the sounds it can filter. If the control is missing from a work or school account, organization settings may limit availability; ask the administrator. See Filter out noise from your meeting on Google Meet.
3. Test the result and adjust only as needed
- Join a test call or ask a participant to listen while you speak.
- Use the actual background sounds you need to manage, such as typing or a fan, rather than judging the setting in a silent room.
- If the noise remains distracting, try a stronger suppression option where the app provides one.
- If your voice sounds clipped, muffled, or unnatural, reduce processing or test another microphone. There is no universally best suppression level; the right balance depends on the room, microphone, and app.
Noise filtering trades some sound detail for less background distraction. Zoom notes that audio filters can interfere when capturing the full range of sound is important. If you are playing music or sharing other non-speech audio, review its professional audio guidance and choose settings suited to that use rather than assuming speech suppression is always preferable.

4. Improve microphone placement if the room still comes through
If your built-in microphone makes your voice sound distant or picks up room echo, try moving closer to it or consider a headset or earset with a microphone. A microphone nearer your mouth can make your voice easier to capture without relying only on aggressive filtering. A 2021 World Health Organization-hosted document, Zoom Best Practice, recommends a headset or earset with a microphone to help mitigate room noise that could cause echo. This is general guidance, not a guarantee that every headset blocks every sound.
Bluetooth headphones can involve a separate tradeoff: Zoom warns that other participants may hear lower-quality microphone audio while Bluetooth headphones are in use. If voice quality is poor, compare the headset mic with the computer’s built-in mic or a wired alternative; use the one that sounds clearer in your setup. See Using Bluetooth headphones with Zoom.
