Choose the highest fan speed that is comfortable. If you turn the speed down, run the purifier for longer while the room is occupied: lower speed filters less air per unit of time, and extra runtime can help compensate, but it does not guarantee the same cleaning rate.
Why a quieter setting usually means less airflow
Fan speed is the main trade-off. A faster fan generally moves and filters more air, while producing more noise and air movement. At a lower speed, the purifier is quieter but filters less air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that noise depends partly on fan speed and that an air cleaner filters less air at a lower speed. Its technical summary also cautions that lower airflow settings can reduce noise while making the cleaner less effective at pollutant removal.

There is no universal quiet setting that maintains the same cleaning rate across different models. EPA says that higher speeds and longer run times generally increase the amount of air filtered, but that does not establish a formula for how much extra runtime offsets a particular speed reduction.

How to make your air purifier quieter in everyday use
- Clear the intake and outlet. Move the purifier away from curtains and nearby objects that obstruct airflow. Leave open space around both the air intake and the outlet.
- Redirect the outlet draft. If moving air is what bothers you, point the outlet away from your bed, desk, or seating area. EPA advises redirecting airflow when the air cleaner causes an uncomfortable draft.
- Choose the highest comfortable speed. Try the fastest setting that you and other people in the room can tolerate. This is a practical compromise, not a guarantee that the purifier is cleaning at a particular rate.
- Extend runtime if you lower the speed. Keep the unit running longer while the room is occupied. This can increase the amount of air filtered over time, but a lower setting still filters less per unit of time and is not guaranteed to match a higher setting’s performance.
- Check the filter and follow the unit’s maintenance instructions. EPA says a dirty or overloaded filter will not work well. Clean or replace it as the manufacturer directs; maintenance is important for performance, but a new filter is not guaranteed to make a noisy unit quieter.
How to choose a replacement that can run quietly enough
If noise makes the purifier difficult to use, compare models by room-appropriate clean air delivery rate (CADR), published noise level, and the fan speed at which that noise was measured. A model’s headline noise figure may not describe how loud it will be at the speed you expect to use. Check as well whether the unit’s airflow can be directed away from where you sit or sleep, and whether its placement requirements fit the room.

EPA recommends choosing a portable air cleaner with a CADR large enough for the room. Its illustrative particle-removal sizing estimates below assume an eight-foot ceiling; higher ceilings may call for greater CADR. They are room-sizing estimates, not guarantees that a unit will deliver the same performance on a quiet setting.

EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home gives around 50 decibels (dB) as roughly comparable to the operating noise of a modern refrigerator. Treat that as an illustration, not a universal definition of quiet or a standard purifier threshold. Noise ratings are not reported consistently across consumer products, EPA’s Residential Air Cleaners – A Technical Summary explains, so figures from different models may not be directly comparable unless their measurement conditions and fan speeds match. EPA does not endorse specific brands or models.
