How to Reduce Abandoned Carts on Your Shopping Site

Reduce avoidable cart abandonment by diagnosing funnel drop-offs, making costs and guest checkout clear, simplifying forms, and sending useful recovery messages to eligible shoppers.

To reduce avoidable cart abandonment, find where shoppers drop out, then fix the specific obstacle—often unexpected costs, forced account creation, or a difficult checkout. Follow up with eligible shoppers who provided an email address, but treat recovery messages as a supplement, not a replacement for a smoother checkout. Some visitors are only browsing, so a zero abandonment rate is not a realistic goal.

Start by finding where shoppers leave

A high overall abandonment figure does not tell you what to fix. First define the steps in your store’s funnel, then compare how many shoppers move from one step to the next:

  2. Add to cart
  3. Checkout start
  4. Payment attempt
  5. Completed purchase

Break down drop-offs by device, traffic source, geography, payment method, and new versus returning shoppers where your analytics support it. A large loss between add-to-cart and checkout may point to cart-level uncertainty; a loss after payment attempt calls for investigating payment failures. Use your own data to prioritize rather than treating a broad industry average as a diagnosis.

For stores using Shopify, its abandoned-checkout records can be reviewed for patterns, and payment events may expose failed-payment details. These are platform-specific tools, not a universal analytics setup.

Fix the checkout barriers shoppers can actually encounter

Show the full cost early

Display shipping, taxes, fees, and the order total in the cart or early in checkout. When delivery cost depends on location, show an estimate and explain how it is calculated. State free-shipping thresholds clearly, and avoid introducing charges at the final step. Baymard Institute’s May 19, 2026 guide reports that 39% of shoppers cited additional fees, such as delivery charges and taxes, as a reason for abandoning checkout. That finding supports checking for price surprises; local shipping and tax rules still vary.

Make guest checkout easy to spot

Offer a prominent, clearly labeled guest checkout path rather than burying it beneath sign-in fields. If an account would be useful, invite the customer to create one after the purchase. Baymard’s May 2026 guide reports that 19% cited forced account creation as a reason for abandoning checkout.

Remove unnecessary typing and make errors easy to fix

Ask only for information needed to fulfill the order. Hide fields that do not apply, support browser autofill, and use suitable input types for details such as email addresses and phone numbers. If a field is required, explain why when the purpose may not be obvious. Error messages should say what to correct and preserve information already entered.

Baymard’s article updated February 2, 2025 reports an average of 23.48 checkout form elements visible by default across its benchmark, or 14.88 when counting only form fields. It describes a potential 20–60% reduction in default visible elements for many flows. These are benchmark findings and an opportunity to examine a checkout—not a universal target for every store. In that same article, 17% of US online shoppers cited a checkout that was too long or complicated.

Make delivery, payment, and trust details clear

Before the final step, tell shoppers which payment methods are available and when an order is expected to arrive. Make returns and payment-security information easy to find. If you ask for sensitive or seemingly unnecessary details, such as a phone number, explain why. Shopify’s checkout optimization guide identifies delivery information, payment choice, trust, mobile usability, and localization as factors to consider. These are vendor recommendations, not independent proof that any one change will increase conversion for every store.

Understand what abandonment statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Not every abandoned cart represents a lost sale. Baymard’s article, updated February 2, 2025, reports that 42% of US online shoppers said they had abandoned a cart in the previous three months because they were “just browsing / not ready to buy.” This is a shopper-reported reason over a recall period; it is not the share of all sessions that will abandon, nor a benchmark for your individual store.

Baymard also reports a modeled estimate that fixing documented checkout usability issues could raise conversion by 35.26% for the average large ecommerce site. That estimate is not a promise or forecast for a particular merchant. Abandonment statistics can use different denominators—carts, checkout starts, or sessions—and vary by geography and time period, so compare like with like when monitoring your own funnel.

Recover eligible shoppers with useful follow-up

Send a reminder that helps the customer continue

A recovery message should identify the items left behind, provide a direct link to resume checkout when your platform supports it, and answer a real question such as delivery timing or return terms. Shopify’s email guide suggests a starting sequence: a first reminder after two to four hours, a second after 24 to 48 hours, and a later exploratory message if the shopper has not engaged. Treat that as one vendor’s example; test timing and content against your own outcomes.

Do not automatically offer a discount in every message. A discount can erode margin and teach customers to wait for an offer. First determine whether the message can resolve uncertainty or make it easier to complete the order.

Know which shoppers your platform can reach

Shopify’s recovery documentation says its abandoned-checkout state applies after a shopper provides an email address and the checkout remains incomplete for more than ten minutes. The feature is available only for certain sales channels. Shopify also withholds emails in specified cases, including when the shopper completes a purchase before sending, a payment processing error occurs, the shipping destination is unsupported, no products are available, or a high-risk block applies. Other ecommerce platforms may use different eligibility rules, so check the rules for your system.

Shopify’s 2026 guide cites Klaviyo benchmark data showing a 6% average recovery-email click rate and an 11.3% rate among the top 10% of its ecommerce customers. Those figures are clicks—not purchases or recovered revenue—and should not be used as a sales forecast.

Choose changes by impact, effort, and evidence

When several fixes are possible, weigh where the funnel drop occurs, how many shoppers encounter the suspected friction, implementation effort, effects on order margin, and whether the change works on both desktop and mobile. Test one material change at a time where feasible. Judge the result by completed orders and revenue, not email clicks alone.

Baymard Institute Research Lead Edward Scott said in its May 19, 2026 guide: “Our ecommerce UX benchmark shows that many sites are still including too many form fields in their checkouts — degrading the overall user experience.” Use that as a reason to inspect the form, not as evidence that field count is the only cause of your store’s abandonment.
