Redeem a Google Play gift card on Android through Google Play → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code. On a computer, use play.google.com/redeem. Enter the code, check the Google Account shown, and confirm only when it is the account that should receive the value.
Promotional codes can use the same redemption path, but they may grant an app-specific benefit instead of general Play balance. Country, currency, account region, activation status, expiration terms, and balance limits determine whether any code will work.

Use the Google Play app and verify the receiving account before the final confirmation. A redeemed code is attached to the account you confirm; moving it to another account later is generally not possible.

Redeem a Google Play code on a computer
- Open play.google.com/redeem in a browser.
- Sign in to the Google Account that should receive the value.
- Enter the gift-card or promotional code.
- Select Redeem.
- Check the receiving account shown on the confirmation screen.
- Confirm the redemption.
If more than one Google Account is signed in to the browser, pause at the account-review step. A code redeemed to the wrong account normally cannot be transferred to the account you intended. Use a private browser window or sign out of other accounts if you keep getting the wrong account in the form.

Checkout payment-method selector
Google also documents code redemption from the payment-method selector during checkout. When a purchase reaches the payment screen, look for the option to add or redeem a code, enter it, and review the account and resulting balance before completing the purchase. The wording and position of this option can vary by device, country, and the type of item being purchased.

Codes tied to a particular app
A promotional code may be valid only inside a named app. If the offer or an in-app prompt tells you to redeem it there, follow that instruction rather than assuming it is general Google Play credit. An app-specific code can provide an item, feature, subscription period, or other benefit without creating spendable Play balance. In that situation, entering it at the general Play redemption page may produce an error even though the code itself is genuine.
Gift cards and promotional codes are not the same
Both may be called “Google Play codes,” but the value and restrictions can differ. Read the offer text before entering a code.
| Characteristic | Gift card or gift code | Promotional code |
|---|---|---|
| Typical source | Purchased from an authorized retailer or supplied digitally after purchase | Issued through a promotion, event, customer-support interaction, or another qualifying offer |
| What it provides | Prepaid Google Play balance for eligible digital content and services | May add Play balance, or may grant a benefit restricted to a particular app, product, or offer |
| Expiration | The card itself is subject to the applicable country and issuer terms; an error can also indicate an inactive or cancelled code | Promotional credits and offers can have a stated expiration date and may stop working after the designated period |
| Geography | Redeemable and usable only in the country and currency where purchased; the Play account region must match | Must follow the region named by the offer; promotional balance remains subject to that offer’s geographic and expiry rules |
| Where to redeem | Play app, play.google.com/redeem, or an available checkout code field | The same general paths unless the offer specifically directs redemption inside an app or another Google flow |
Do not treat every promotion as unrestricted Play money. Check whether the terms name an app, a product, a minimum purchase, a country, an end date, or a limit on who qualifies. A support-issued code may be intended to correct a particular purchase rather than provide a general credit.
Country, currency, and account-region rules
Google’s rule for gift cards is strict: a card is redeemable and usable only in the country and currency where it was purchased. The Google Play account’s country or region must match the place where the card or promotional code is offered. A card bought in one country generally will not work on an account configured for another country, even if the face value appears in a familiar currency.

If you are traveling
Traveling does not make a foreign card valid. If you are outside the purchase or offer country, return to that country before trying again. A country error can appear as “Couldn’t redeem this code. This code can only be used in [country/region].” Changing networks or repeatedly retrying while abroad does not remove the geographic restriction.
If you recently moved
Google may allow you to change your Play country when you have actually moved. The change follows Google’s country-change requirements and can affect available content and payment methods. Existing redeemed Play balance does not move with you: it remains available in the original country. Plan around that limitation before changing the account region, and do not change countries merely to force a foreign card to work.
Regional availability and recent exceptions
Denominations, retailers, currencies, and terms vary by region, so check Google’s live country-specific availability information before buying a card. As of the availability guidance checked on October 13, 2026, gift cards and prepaid gift-card-funded Play balance in Malaysia expired on February 1, 2026. Google says users can no longer spend that prepaid balance and may contact support about a refund. In Singapore, gift cards and gift-card-funded balance expired on February 1, 2025; Google lists alternative payment methods. Promotional balance in Malaysia remains governed by the applicable promotional expiry terms. These exceptions mean Google Play gift cards should not be described as globally available or permanent stored value.
Check these conditions before entering a code
- Correct account: Confirm the profile picture, email address, and country on the account that will receive the value.
- Correct region and currency: The account and payment profile must match the country where the card was purchased or the promotion was offered.
- Readable code: Distinguish similar characters such as 0/O and 1/I, and enter the characters without spaces or dashes.
- Activation: A physical card may need the retailer to activate it at checkout.
- Offer terms: Check app restrictions, minimum requirements, eligibility rules, and expiration dates for promotional codes.
- Balance room: A code or promotion cannot be redeemed if it would push the account over the applicable country balance limit.
- Account type: Work or school accounts can have administrator restrictions that prevent some Play features.
- Receipt and serial number: Keep the purchase receipt and the card’s serial number until the balance appears. They may be needed when a retailer or Google investigates activation or damage.
Fix common Google Play redemption errors
“Couldn’t redeem this code” or an invalid-code message
First re-enter every character. Google says codes are typically 16 characters, but digital codes can differ, so do not insert or remove characters to force a 16-character format. Remove spaces and dashes, then try the Android app or play.google.com/redeem while signed in to the intended account. Check that you are entering a redemption code, not a card serial number, order number, or promotional text that belongs in an app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a physical card, the Play app may offer Payments & subscriptions → Redeem gift code → Scan gift card. Scanning can help when the printed characters are difficult to distinguish. If the card is damaged or unreadable, contact Google support with a photo that clearly shows the card and its serial number, plus proof of purchase. Do not send the redemption code to an unsolicited caller or stranger.
The card was not activated
Some physical cards are inactive until the retailer completes activation at purchase. Ask the seller to verify activation using its sales record. Google states, “Google can’t activate gift cards on behalf of the store.” If the retailer confirms activation and the code still fails, contact Google with the purchase documentation and card details. A receipt showing payment does not by itself prove that the retailer’s activation step succeeded.
“Already redeemed”
A used code cannot be redeemed again. Check the Play balance and transaction history on the same Google Account used during the original attempt. If family members or friends could access the card, ask whether one of them redeemed it. Google does not disclose which account redeemed a code, so support may be unable to identify the account that used it. Do not buy a replacement code until you have checked every account that could have been signed in.

You reached a redemption or balance limit
Google may show “You have reached your redemption limit. You can try redeeming your card/code when your limit resets.” A separate balance limit can block a code when adding its value would exceed the country limit. Spend some of the existing balance, wait 24 hours, and try the code again. Do not repeatedly submit the code during the waiting period; repeated attempts will not raise the limit.

Verify that you are in the country where the card was purchased or the promotion was offered, that the card currency matches the payment profile, and that the Play country is correct. If you are traveling, try again after returning. If you are physically in the correct country and the account settings still appear correct, use Google’s support form rather than altering the account repeatedly. Changing the Play country can affect content and payment methods and will not move balance already redeemed in the former country.
The promotional code expired
Review the offer’s end date and eligibility terms. Promotional credits have expiration dates, and an app-specific promotion can end even when ordinary Play balance remains usable. If a gift-card error indicates an inactive or cancelled code instead, contact the retailer or the organization that issued the code; do not assume Google can restore a cancelled promotion. Promotional value may also disappear after the designated period even if it was never spent.
The code works only in an app
Return to the app named in the offer and follow its redemption prompt. Some codes are designed to deliver an in-app reward rather than a balance credit, so they may fail on the general Play redemption page even when the code is genuine. Confirm that the app is installed from Google Play and that you are signed in to the account named by the offer.
A work or school account is blocking redemption
Organization-managed Google Accounts can restrict payments or Play features. Contact the organization’s technical staff to determine whether policy allows redemption. Do not move a company-managed code to a personal account unless the issuer’s terms explicitly allow it.
What you can do with redeemed Play balance
Google Play balance can pay for eligible digital content and services available through Google Play, subject to the country’s rules. Depending on the product and region, some subscriptions may not accept stored Play value. Confirm the payment options shown at checkout rather than assuming every subscription can use the balance. A promotional credit may have narrower uses than ordinary balance, so read its terms before relying on it for a recurring charge.
Play balance cannot be used to buy hardware in the Google Store or to buy other gift cards. It is not a general-purpose bank balance and cannot normally be converted to cash. Availability of particular books, films, apps, games, or subscriptions can differ by country.

Refunds, transfers, and mistaken redemptions
Gift cards and prepaid Play balance are generally nonrefundable and nontransferable except where applicable law requires otherwise. You may ask the original retailer about a refund, but any retailer refund is at that retailer’s discretion and is not a standard Google remedy. For a country-specific shutdown such as the Malaysia balance expiration, Google may provide a support route, but a refund is not guaranteed in every situation.
Because the balance is attached to the account confirmed during redemption, check the account before tapping Confirm. If you redeem to the wrong account, do not promise yourself that support can move it; transfer is generally unavailable. Keep the transaction details and contact support promptly if the redemption was unauthorized, while recognizing that Google may not be able to reverse a completed redemption.

Protect the code from scams
Google Play Help warns: “Be cautious of any non-Google entity or individual who asks for gift cards as a payment method for goods or services. This may be a scam.” It also says, “Never share the code for gift card redemption.”
A legitimate retailer may need purchase information to investigate activation, but no stranger, seller, employer, technical-support caller, or online contact should demand the redemption code as payment or ask you to read it aloud. Treat the code like cash until it has been redeemed to the correct account. If someone has already received the code, contact the retailer or Google promptly and preserve the receipt, card serial number, messages, and transaction information.
Where to buy a card safely
If you still need a physical or digital card, use an authorized regional retail partner identified by Google and verify the country, denomination, seller, activation policy, and return terms before paying. Availability and denominations change by region. Keep the receipt and card serial number until the balance appears in the intended account. Avoid listings that hide the seller, promise a country different from your account, or ask you to send the code before a transaction is complete.
The practical rule
Use the Play app or play.google.com/redeem, inspect the receiving account before confirmation, and treat the country, currency, activation, expiry, and offer restrictions as mandatory checks. If an error remains, identify whether it is a typo, activation failure, prior redemption, limit, region mismatch, expiry, app restriction, or managed-account policy before contacting the appropriate retailer, issuer, or Google support channel.

How do I redeem a Google Play code on a computer?
Go to play.google.com/redeem, sign in to the intended Google Account, enter the code, select Redeem, check the account shown, and confirm.
Can I use a Google Play gift card from another country?
Usually not. Google ties a gift card to the country and currency where it was purchased, and the Play account region must match. Traveling abroad does not remove the restriction.
Why does my physical card say it is invalid?
Check for character mistakes, remove spaces and dashes, and verify that the retailer activated the card at purchase. Google cannot activate a card for the retailer. If the card is damaged, contact support with a clear photo, serial number, and proof of purchase.
Can an already-redeemed Google Play code be used again?
No. Check the Play balance and transaction history on the account used for redemption, and ask anyone who could access the card. Google generally cannot disclose which account redeemed it.
Do Google Play promotional codes expire?
They can. Review the offer’s end date and eligibility terms. Promotional balance may expire and an app-specific benefit can end even while ordinary Play balance remains available.
Can I transfer redeemed Play balance to another account or get cash?
Generally no. Gift cards and prepaid Play balance are usually nonrefundable and nontransferable except where law requires otherwise, and Play balance is not normally convertible to cash.
What should I do if someone asks for my Google Play code as payment?
Do not share it. Google warns that requests for gift cards as payment for goods or services may be scams and says never to share a redemption code.
