You can also redeem it through Microsoft Store on Windows, the Xbox PC app, or Microsoft’s web account flow. The entitlement is attached to the Microsoft account signed in when you confirm, so check that account first.
What you need before redeeming
Have the code available and decide which Microsoft account should own the game. Xbox’s official instructions identify an Xbox download code as 25 characters long. The code can contain letters and numbers, so enter every character exactly as shown and do not add spaces or punctuation that are not part of it.

Redemption is an account transaction, not a transfer to whichever console happens to be nearby. Microsoft says Xbox download codes and tokens redeem to a Microsoft account. Once accepted, the game license is associated with that account and can be used on supported Xbox or Windows devices where that account is signed in. If several people use the same console, check the displayed gamertag before selecting the final confirmation.

- Keep the complete code visible or copied from the retailer’s email or card.
- Sign in to the intended Microsoft account before opening the redemption screen.
- Use a supported route: an Xbox console, Microsoft Store on Windows, the Xbox PC app, or Microsoft’s account website.
- Do not use the Xbox mobile app for this task; Xbox currently says code redemption is unavailable there.
Interface names can change. The steps below reflect Xbox and Microsoft support pages accessed October 11, 2026; if a label has moved, look for the same Redeem or Redeem code action in the current Store or account menu.

Choose the route that fits your situation
All four routes perform the same account redemption. The practical difference is where you are already signed in and how convenient it is to type or paste the code.
| Route | Best when | Where to start | Code entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | You are at the console and want to redeem directly for console play. | Xbox button → Store → View side menu → Redeem | Use the controller’s on-screen keyboard. |
| Microsoft Store on Windows | You are on a Windows PC and already use the Store account that should receive the game. | Start → Microsoft Store → account icon → Redeem code or gift cards | Typing or pasting is convenient on a physical keyboard. |
| Xbox PC app | You manage Xbox PC games from the Xbox app. | Xbox app → gamerpic → Settings → Redeem a code | Typing or pasting in the app’s redemption field. |
| Microsoft account website | You are away from the console or prefer a browser. | Microsoft’s Redeem code page, after signing in | Paste or type the code in the account form. |
Xbox documents these as available options but does not claim that one is universally faster or more reliable. Choose the device on which you can most easily verify the correct account and enter the characters accurately.
Which route should you use?
Use the console route when you are already in front of the Xbox and want the shortest controller-based sequence. Use Microsoft Store on Windows if your code is in an email, text file, or browser window and you prefer a keyboard. The Xbox PC app is convenient when you already manage your PC library there. The website is the most flexible option when you are away from both a console and a Windows app. None of these choices changes the account to which the entitlement is applied, so convenience should never outweigh checking the account name.
Redeem on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
The console path is the direct option when the Xbox is in front of you. It is the same basic sequence on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
- Open the guide. Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Store. In the guide, select Store.
- Open the Store side menu. Press the controller’s View button. This is the button with the overlapping-rectangles icon, not the Menu button.
- Choose Redeem. Select Redeem from the side menu.
- Enter the code. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter the complete code, then select Next.
- Read the confirmation screen. Check the Microsoft account and the product shown. Follow the prompts to complete redemption.
After confirmation, the game entitlement belongs to the account shown on that screen. If you opened the Store while another family member was signed in, stop before accepting the prompt and switch to the intended account. The console route does not require a separate accessory or a physical disc.
If the Redeem option is not where expected
Make sure you are in the Store opened from the Xbox guide, then press View to expose the side menu. Looking only at the Store home page can hide the option. If the dashboard has a different layout after an update, use the Store’s search or account menus to locate the same Redeem command rather than entering the code into a game-install screen.
Entering a code with the controller
The on-screen keyboard makes the console route slower than a physical keyboard, so work from a clear copy of the code. Enter all 25 characters in their original order and pause to compare the final entry with the card or message. The confirmation page is your last opportunity to verify the product and account before the redemption is committed.

Redeem with Microsoft Store on Windows
Windows provides a browser-free route through the Microsoft Store application. This is useful when the code is in an email or document on the same PC.
- Open the Start menu and search for Store.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the account icon in the top-right corner. Confirm that it shows the Microsoft account that should own the game.
- Select Redeem code or gift cards.
- Enter or paste the complete code and select Next.
- Review the product and account details, then follow the prompts to finish.
The Store may ask you to sign in again even if Windows itself is signed in. Treat that sign-in as the decisive account check. A code redeemed in Microsoft Store is not merely stored on that computer; it is recorded against the Microsoft account.

Store and Xbox app accounts can differ
Windows can have separate identities for the device, Microsoft Store, and Xbox services. Before confirming, inspect the account icon in Microsoft Store and, if you plan to play through the Xbox app, verify the Xbox app’s gamerpic as well. Using the same intended account in both places avoids a license appearing to be missing after redemption.
Redeem in the Xbox PC app
If you use the Xbox app for PC games, redeem from its settings rather than from a game page.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Select your gamerpic in the top-left corner.
- Open Settings.
- Find the Redeem a code section and select Redeem.
- Enter or paste the code, then select Next.
- Check the account and product shown in the confirmation prompt and accept the remaining instructions.
If the Xbox app is signed in to a different gamertag from the account that should receive the game, sign out or change accounts before entering the code. Closing and reopening the app after redemption can refresh the library, but the entitlement itself is controlled by the account, not by the app’s local cache.
When to use the Xbox app instead of Microsoft Store
Both Windows routes redeem the code to an account. The Xbox app is the natural starting point if that is where you browse and install PC games; Microsoft Store is useful if you are already handling the code in the Store or want the Redeem code or gift cards command. Microsoft documents both paths, without ranking either one as more reliable.
Redeem through Microsoft’s online account flow
A console is not required. Microsoft’s support instructions provide an account-based redemption flow: open the official Redeem a gift card or code to your Microsoft account page, select Redeem code, sign in, and enter or paste the code or token.
- Open the Microsoft redemption page in a browser.
- Select Redeem code if prompted.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the game.
- Enter or paste the complete code.
- Submit it and read the product and account confirmation carefully.
- Accept the prompts to complete redemption.
Xbox’s official redemption page also directs account holders to manage redeemed codes through account.microsoft.com. Use the account-management view when you need to verify which account is signed in or review account information after a successful redemption.
Why the web route is useful
The web flow is practical when the code is displayed on another browser tab, when the console is occupied, or when you are preparing a gift for the correct account holder. It also gives you a larger account-sign-in view than a television interface. You still need to read the final product and account confirmation; browser convenience does not remove the risk of redeeming to the wrong Microsoft account.
What happens after successful redemption
A successful redemption grants the digital entitlement to the Microsoft account. On an Xbox console, look in My games & apps and the library associated with that account. On Windows, check the Microsoft Store or Xbox app library while signed in to the same account. The exact download button and availability can vary by platform and by the product’s compatibility; redemption itself does not install the game automatically in every case.
If the code represents account credit rather than a specific game, the balance becomes available for eligible Microsoft Store purchases. Microsoft explains that gift cards, download codes, and tokens redeem to the account and can be spent through Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox. A gift card therefore should not be mistaken for a code that grants one named game.

Redeeming is separate from installing
The redemption confirmation proves that the account accepted the code; it is not necessarily an installation confirmation. Afterward, open the library for the same account and choose the available install or download action. If the item is not visible immediately, verify the account used at confirmation before trying the code again. Re-entering a successfully redeemed code will not move it to another profile.

Game download code
A game download code is intended to add a particular digital game or add-on to the account. The confirmation screen should identify the product before you accept it. If it names a different product from the one you purchased, do not complete the transaction; contact the seller as described below.
Gift card
An Xbox or Microsoft gift card normally adds spendable balance rather than a preselected game. Microsoft’s product description for a digital Xbox gift card says it can be used for purchases including games. The card’s value and any regional conditions are determined by the product listing and the account’s market.
Token or promotional code
A token can use the same redemption interface while representing an offer, subscription, or other entitlement. Read the confirmation text and any stated conditions before accepting it. Do not assume that every 25-character string is a full game license.
For an overview of gift-card use, see Microsoft’s Xbox Gift Card – Digital Code product page. It is an adjacent product explanation, not a substitute for the code-specific instructions above.

Mobile app limitation
Xbox’s redemption FAQ currently says the Xbox mobile app does not support code redemption. If the code is on your phone, open a mobile browser and use Microsoft’s online account flow instead, or move to a console or Windows app. Do not spend time searching the Xbox mobile app for a missing Redeem button; the limitation is documented by Xbox.
Code-entry checklist
Before pressing the final confirmation button, run through this short checklist:
- There are 25 characters, and none were omitted.
- You entered the code itself rather than a receipt number, barcode, order number, or product title.
- The account email address or gamertag shown on screen is the intended owner.
- The product name matches what you bought or were given.
- You understand whether the code grants a game, add-on, promotional entitlement, or account balance.
This pause is especially important for gifts and shared family consoles. The official redemption pages establish the account-based nature of the transaction, but they do not promise that an incorrectly redeemed entitlement can be transferred later.
Troubleshooting without guessing at the cause
The code is rejected immediately
Recheck each character and make sure you are entering the complete code in the redemption field, not a retailer order number, barcode number, or game title. Confirm that the account and product shown before submission are the ones you expect. Official guidance establishes the redemption steps and code format, but it does not provide one universal diagnosis for every error message. Record the exact wording of the error before seeking further support.

You bought the wrong code
Microsoft advises contacting the retailer when the wrong code was purchased. Have the order information and the code details ready, and avoid redeeming a product you do not want while requesting help. The retailer’s return or exchange policy determines what remedy is available.
You are trying to redeem in the phone app
Switch to an Xbox console, Microsoft Store on Windows, the Xbox PC app, or the browser-based account route. Xbox currently lists the mobile app as unsupported for this operation.
The game does not appear after redemption
First, sign out and back in with the Microsoft account used for confirmation, then check the relevant console or Windows library. On Windows, compare the account shown in Microsoft Store with the account in the Xbox app. If the product still does not appear, use the displayed error or order details when contacting Microsoft support; do not assume that a missing library entry means the code was invalid.
A region, expiration, or already-used message appears
Do not infer the cause from the code alone. Region restrictions, expiration terms, prior use, and retailer activation policies can differ by product. Follow the exact message shown and consult the current Microsoft or retailer support guidance for that product. The general redemption pages do not establish a single remedy for all of these cases.
The code was exposed before you redeemed it
Treat an unredeemed code like a purchase credential. Do not publish it in a support forum or send it to people who do not need it. If a retailer supplied the code electronically, preserve the order confirmation and delivery details in case support asks for them. These precautions do not change the redemption steps, but they make a retailer or Microsoft support request easier to document.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the account decision deliberate
The most consequential step is choosing the account before confirmation. A family console can have multiple profiles, and a Windows PC can separate Store and Xbox identities. Pause on the final prompt and verify the displayed email or gamertag. If you redeem on the wrong account, the official instructions supplied here do not promise a transfer or reversal; contact Microsoft support promptly with the transaction details rather than attempting to redeem the same code repeatedly.
Frequently overlooked details
No special Xbox accessory is required. The supported workflow needs only the code, a Microsoft account, and access to one of the documented console, Windows, or web routes. A physical disc is not part of digital-code redemption, and installing the game is a separate step after the entitlement is accepted.
Likewise, do not substitute a Windows product-key activation screen for the Xbox game-code flow. Microsoft lists a separate Windows activation route for Windows product keys. For an Xbox game, gift card, download code, or token, use the Store, Xbox app, or Microsoft account redemption action described above.
Official instructions
For the current console and Windows app paths, use Xbox’s Redeem Xbox Codes or Gift Cards page. For account redemption, code ownership, and Microsoft’s direction to contact a retailer for a wrong purchase, use Microsoft Support’s redeem-a-gift-card-or-code article. These pages may update their labels as Xbox and Windows interfaces change.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters are in an Xbox digital game code?
Xbox’s redemption instructions identify the code as 25 characters. Enter the complete sequence exactly as shown, without adding spaces or punctuation.
Can I redeem an Xbox code without an Xbox console?
Yes. Use Microsoft Store on Windows, the Xbox PC app, or Microsoft’s online account redemption page. The code is applied to the Microsoft account you use to confirm it.
Can I redeem a code in the Xbox mobile app?
Xbox currently says code redemption is unavailable in the Xbox mobile app. Use an Xbox console, a Windows app, or a mobile browser opened to Microsoft’s account redemption flow.

Is an Xbox gift card the same as a game code?
No. A game code normally grants a named game or add-on, while a gift card generally adds spendable Microsoft Store balance. Read the confirmation screen to identify what the code represents.
What if the game is missing from my library after redemption?
Sign in again with the account used for confirmation and check the matching Xbox, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app library. On Windows, verify that the Store and Xbox app are using the intended account before contacting support with the order or error details.
The Bottom Line
Use the Xbox Store, Microsoft Store on Windows, Xbox PC app, or Microsoft’s web redemption page to enter the 25-character code. Confirm the product and Microsoft account before accepting it; the Xbox mobile app does not currently redeem codes, and a wrong-code purchase should be taken to the retailer.
