How to Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online Membership Card

Learn how to redeem a Nintendo Switch Online membership card through Nintendo eShop or a browser, verify the correct account and region, understand auto-renewal, and fix rejected codes.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online membership card in Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that should own the membership. On a Switch or Switch 2, open eShop, choose that account, open the Nintendo Switch Online membership screen, select the download-code option, enter the code, accept the displayed terms, and review auto-renewal before confirming. Nintendo also supports redemption in a web browser, but the account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

Check the card’s country, membership tier, and plan type before entering anything. Codes are region-specific, and an existing membership may run alongside a redeemed code instead of combining with it.

What you need before redeeming

Have the physical card or retailer receipt ready and identify the Nintendo Switch Online membership download code. Retailers sometimes print more than one number on a receipt; do not substitute an order number, activation number, or other retailer reference. The membership code is the one intended for Nintendo redemption.

  • A Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 connected to the internet, or a browser for the online method.
  • The Nintendo Account that should receive the membership. If several accounts use the console, verify the account name before entering the code.
  • A code whose country or region matches the Nintendo Account’s country setting.
  • The correct membership tier and plan type, such as standard Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and individual or family where applicable.

Nintendo Americas instructions describe a 16-digit download code. Characters that are not used in prepaid codes, including O, I, and Z, are disabled on the console’s on-screen keyboard, so a missing letter is usually intentional rather than a keyboard fault.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch Online 12-Month Individual Membership [Digital Code]
  • Enjoy a curated library of 70+ classic Super NES and NES games. You can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or virtually pass the controller, depending on the game.
  • Access a collection of Game Boy games to play anytime, anywhere!
  • In addition to the game data regularly saved to your system, you’ll have online backup. This makes it easy to retrieve your game data if you lose your system or start using a new one.
  • Enhance your online experience with the Nintendo Switch Online app. For example, you can use voice chat with players in compatible games.

Menu names, available plans, payment methods, and renewal choices can differ by country. If your eShop uses different wording, follow the equivalent Nintendo Switch Online membership or download-code option for your region rather than changing your account country just to match a card.

Redeem the card on a Switch or Switch 2

1. Open Nintendo eShop

  1. From the HOME Menu, select Nintendo eShop.
  2. If the console asks which user is opening eShop, select the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership. Do not proceed on a different family member’s account merely because it is the first one listed.

2. Open the membership screen

  1. Inside eShop, select Nintendo Switch Online.
  2. Choose the option that lets you view or change the membership. This screen shows the plans available to the signed-in account and provides the redemption route.

3. Enter the download code

  1. Select the option to redeem a download code.
  2. Enter the membership code exactly as printed. Use the on-screen keyboard or the console’s supported input method; letters that Nintendo excludes from prepaid codes will not appear as choices.
  3. Read any terms shown on screen and select the confirmation option to continue.

4. Review renewal settings before accepting

  1. Read the auto-renewal screen carefully. It may ask you to choose a renewal method, such as a credit card, PayPal, or available eShop funds in regions where those methods are offered.
  2. Confirm the redemption only after checking the account, plan, and renewal selection. Nintendo’s Americas instructions state that selecting a renewal method does not charge you immediately; the method is used if the membership renews when the current period ends.

After confirmation, the membership is attached to the Nintendo Account selected at the start. If the result is not what you expected, stop and check the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information before attempting another code.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online code online

Nintendo provides a browser redemption page at https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/. This is useful when the console is unavailable, but it has an extra requirement: the Nintendo Account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the redemption page in a browser.
  2. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership.
  3. Check the account name shown after signing in. If it is not the intended account, sign out and use the correct one before entering the code.
  4. Enter the membership download code.
  5. When Nintendo asks, enter the account password again.
  6. Select Redeem and read the confirmation details.

If the web page refuses the code even though the characters are correct, verify that the account has previously opened eShop on a Switch or Switch 2. Also check the code’s region and whether it has already been used. A browser cannot bypass those eligibility checks.

Check the region before you redeem

Nintendo Switch Online membership codes are region-specific. A code sold for the Americas works with Nintendo Accounts set to countries in that region where eShop is available; a code for another region is intended for accounts set to that region. On a physical card, inspect the back for the country or regional marking before scratching off or entering the code.

Nintendo says it cannot exchange a code intended for one country for a code for another. A card purchased while traveling, imported from another market, or sent as a gift can therefore be unusable on your account even when the printed plan name appears identical.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Card marking Country or region printed on the physical card or supplied by the seller Determines which Nintendo Accounts can accept the code
Account setting The country selected for the Nintendo Account and the eShop region it uses Must match the code’s intended market
Console location Where the console is physically being used Physical location alone does not make a foreign code compatible
Seller description Whether the listing says the code is for your country, not merely “worldwide” or “global” Vague descriptions can conceal a region restriction

Do this check before redeeming. Once a code is tied to the wrong country, Nintendo’s stated remedy is not a country-to-country exchange. Do not change the Nintendo Account country solely to force a match; use a card intended for the account’s existing market and ask the seller about an incorrectly supplied product.

Make sure the membership plan matches

Membership cards are not interchangeable simply because they all say Nintendo Switch Online. Compare the tier and plan type with the membership already on the account.

Comparison point What to check on the card or receipt What is established
Tier Standard Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Both plan families exist; the available choices depend on region
Plan type Individual or family Different plan types can behave differently when an account already has an active membership
Term The stated membership period on the card or seller listing Specific term lengths were not stated in the available Nintendo instructions; rely on the product’s own wording
Activation status New, unused code rather than a previously revealed or redeemed code A code that has already been used cannot be redeemed again

When you already have an individual membership

Nintendo gives the example of an individual membership that is active when a family-membership code is redeemed. The memberships may run concurrently rather than merging into one plan. That can leave you with overlapping periods and a different account-sharing arrangement than you intended.

When you already have a family membership

Nintendo states that an existing family membership cannot redeem a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual-membership code. Check the exact plan shown in eShop before buying or entering a code; do not assume that a higher-priced or differently named plan will automatically upgrade the current one.

For a family group

Redeem on the Nintendo Account that should hold the membership. A code entered on one adult’s account does not automatically move to another family-group member. Confirm the account name at the sign-in screen and again on the redemption confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand auto-renewal and billing prompts

Redemption can include an auto-renewal decision. In the Americas, Nintendo lists a credit card, PayPal, or eShop funds as possible renewal methods; your country may show fewer choices or different labels.

  • Collection of classic and colorful Game Boy Advance games
  • All Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass* content as released
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC *
  • Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion*
  • Choosing a renewal method during redemption is not an immediate charge according to Nintendo’s Americas instructions.
  • The method is associated with renewal at the end of the membership period if auto-renewal remains enabled.
  • Nintendo’s US gift-card information says memberships renew after the initial term at the then-current price unless canceled.
  • Because prices, payment methods, and cancellation controls vary by region, read the current on-screen terms rather than relying on an older screenshot or a card seller’s description.

If you do not want a future renewal, review the auto-renewal control before completing redemption and check the account’s membership settings afterward. Keep in mind that turning off renewal does not erase the membership period you have already redeemed.

Check that the membership was applied

Nintendo’s membership FAQ says you can view the plan and expiration date in Nintendo eShop under the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information.

  1. Open Nintendo eShop with the same Nintendo Account used for redemption.
  2. Open Nintendo Switch Online.
  3. Open the account’s membership information or view/change membership screen.
  4. Confirm the displayed plan and expiration date.

If the account shows a different plan than the card, first verify that you did not redeem on another user profile. Then check whether an overlapping membership created a separate period instead of extending the one you expected. Save a screenshot or note of the displayed plan and date while you still have the receipt available.

Troubleshoot a rejected code

“Invalid” or similar error

  • Re-enter the code carefully and distinguish numbers from letters. The console keyboard omits O, I, and Z from prepaid-code entry.
  • Make sure you entered the Nintendo membership download code, not another number printed by the retailer.
  • Check the country marking on the card against the Nintendo Account’s country.
  • Confirm that every character is present and that the code has not already been redeemed.

The code is for the wrong region

Do not change the account country as a quick fix. Nintendo says codes cannot be exchanged between countries, and changing an account’s country can affect eShop content and account settings. Contact the seller about an incorrect purchase and consult Nintendo’s local support guidance for your region.

The plan is not eligible

Review the existing membership and the new code side by side. An individual and family plan can run concurrently, while Nintendo specifically excludes redeeming an Expansion Pack individual code on an existing family membership. If the plans do not match, stop before trying additional codes.

Browser redemption is unavailable

Use the console method if the account has never opened eShop on a Switch-family console. The online route requires that prior eShop access, even when the account credentials and code are otherwise valid.

You receive a code-specific error

Record the exact error number and wording instead of paraphrasing it. Nintendo’s membership purchase and extension support page recommends searching for that exact error or contacting Nintendo Support if the published troubleshooting does not resolve it. Include the purchase receipt and card details when support asks for proof of purchase, but never publish the full unused code in a public forum.

How to compare a card before buying

If you have not purchased a code yet, use this checklist before paying. Nintendo confirms that select retailers sell membership download codes, but seller stock, prices, and promotions change and are not universal.

  1. Region: Match the card’s country to the Nintendo Account that will redeem it.
  2. Tier: Decide whether the account needs standard Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
  3. Plan: Choose individual or family based on who must use the benefits, and compare it with any membership already active.
  4. Term: Read the stated duration and whether it is a one-time code or a recurring subscription offer.
  5. Seller reliability: Use a retailer that clearly identifies the region and provides a receipt. Avoid listings that hide the country until after purchase.
  6. Code status: Confirm that the product is new and unused and that the seller explains what happens if a code is already activated.

Keep the receipt until the membership appears with the expected plan and expiration date. A receipt helps distinguish a retailer activation problem from an account, region, or plan mismatch.

Card, code, and subscription: what you are actually redeeming

A physical membership card is a delivery method for a Nintendo Switch Online download code. Entering that code applies the membership to one Nintendo Account; it is not a transferable balance that can be moved later between users. A retailer receipt may also contain a separate transaction or activation reference, which is useful when contacting the seller but is not the Nintendo redemption code.

Do not post a complete unused code in a screenshot, support forum, group chat, or social-media message. If Nintendo or the retailer needs proof, provide the receipt and card information through its official support channel and follow its instructions. Keeping the original card and purchase record also gives you a way to identify the seller, market, and product if an error occurs.

What to check in each redemption route

Route Best use Requirements and checks
Switch or Switch 2 eShop Normal console redemption Internet connection, correct user selected, Nintendo Switch Online membership screen, 16-digit code, and displayed terms
Browser redemption Redeeming when the console is not at hand Sign in at Nintendo’s redemption page; the account must previously have accessed eShop on a Switch-family console; password re-entry may be requested

The two routes still use the same account, code, region, and plan rules. Choosing a browser instead of the console does not remove the region restriction, make an ineligible plan compatible, or allow a used code to work again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I redeem a Nintendo Switch Online code?

On the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop, select the Nintendo Account that should own the membership, open Nintendo Switch Online, choose the view-or-change membership option, select redeem a download code, enter the 16-digit code, accept the displayed terms, and review the auto-renewal settings before confirming.

Where do I enter my Nintendo Switch Online membership code?

Enter it in Nintendo eShop’s Nintendo Switch Online membership redemption flow. You can also use Nintendo’s browser page at https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ after signing in, provided that the account has opened eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

Can I redeem the code online without my Switch?

Yes, through Nintendo’s browser redemption page, but the Nintendo Account must previously have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2. Sign in to the intended account, verify its name, enter the code, re-enter the password if requested, and select Redeem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Nintendo say my code is invalid?

Check that you used the membership download code rather than a retailer number, entered all characters correctly, matched the card’s country to the account region, and have not already redeemed the code. Record the exact error message and use Nintendo’s error-specific support guidance if it continues.

Can I use a Nintendo Switch Online card from another country?

Usually not. Nintendo membership codes are region-specific and are intended for accounts set to the matching country or region. Nintendo says it cannot exchange a code intended for one country for another, so verify the card marking before redeeming.

Will a new code extend my current membership?

Not always. Nintendo says different memberships may run concurrently; for example, an active individual membership and a redeemed family code may overlap instead of merging. An existing family membership cannot redeem a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual-membership code.

Will redeeming the card charge me immediately?

Nintendo’s Americas instructions say selecting a renewal method during redemption does not charge you at that moment. Auto-renewal concerns the end of the membership period, when the selected method may be charged at the then-current price unless renewal is canceled. Regional terms and payment choices can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I check the membership expiration date?

Open Nintendo eShop with the redeeming account, select Nintendo Switch Online, and open the account’s membership information or view/change membership screen. Nintendo says the plan and expiration date are shown there.

The Bottom Line

Use the Nintendo Switch Online membership download code—not a retailer reference—on the correct Nintendo Account. Before confirming, match the card’s region and plan, read the auto-renewal prompt, and then verify the resulting plan and expiration date in eShop. If anything fails, preserve the receipt and exact error message and follow Nintendo’s regional support instructions.
