For a PDF, use a dedicated redaction tool and apply the redactions; a black box, blur, crop, or unapplied mark is not proof that the underlying content has been removed. Then sanitize hidden information where appropriate, save a separate copy, and inspect that saved file before sharing. An image embedded in a PDF can be redacted through the PDF workflow. The sources cited here do not establish a safe, current method for redacting a standalone JPG or PNG.
Redacting a PDF: mark, apply, sanitize, and verify
Adobe’s Acrobat guidance, listed as updated August 31, 2026, separates marking content from applying its removal. Adobe’s Experience League tutorial, listed as updated June 28, 2026, also describes searching for sensitive text and selecting text or images. Use a PDF editor with a redaction function—not a drawing or annotation tool that simply covers content.

- Open the PDF in a program with a redaction tool. Confirm that the feature is specifically for redaction rather than adding shapes, highlights, or comments.
- Mark each item to remove. Select sensitive text and images. If search or pattern-based search is available, use it to find possible repeated occurrences, then review each match before marking it.
- Apply the redactions. In Acrobat, marking and applying are separate actions. Do not share a document while the marks remain unapplied.
- Sanitize hidden information if appropriate. Adobe identifies comments, metadata, and hidden layers as examples of information that may be removed separately from visible page content.
- Save a new sanitized copy. Keep the original intact, especially if you may need it later.
- Reopen and inspect the saved copy. Check the page visually. Where the document and available tools allow, try selecting or searching for the removed text, and inspect document properties and attachments.
Adobe describes these steps in its Acrobat redaction guidance and Experience League tutorial. This is a practical workflow, not a guarantee that every editor handles every file identically.

A visual cover-up changes what someone sees, but does not by itself establish that the original text or pixels have been removed. The Australian Cyber Security Centre defined successful redaction in a report about Adobe Acrobat Pro DC 2017 as “the complete removal of redacted data from every location in a PDF document’s file structure.” That definition is from an older-version report, not a test of current Acrobat. It nevertheless illustrates why applying a true redaction is different from placing a shape over content.

Redacting an image inside a PDF
If the image is part of a PDF, Adobe’s image-specific instructions describe selecting it for redaction, applying the redaction, optionally sanitizing hidden information, and saving the sanitized document. See Adobe’s guide to redacting images in PDFs, listed as updated November 5, 2025.
What about a standalone JPG or PNG?
The cited sources document redacting images embedded in PDFs; they do not establish a current, safe workflow for a separate JPG or PNG. Do not assume that drawing a rectangle, blurring, cropping, or exporting a new-looking image removes the original sensitive pixels, metadata, or alternate versions. Choose a standalone-image tool only when its documentation specifically explains how it permanently removes the selected image data and handles metadata; the sources cited here do not verify a particular product for that task.

Clean up the original Office file separately
If the PDF came from a Word document, spreadsheet, or presentation, remember that the source file may retain personal information even after you redact the PDF. Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance covers Office documents, presentations, and workbooks, including document properties and personal information. Microsoft recommends inspecting a copy because removed information may not be restorable. This is a separate step for the Office source; it is not a PDF-sanitizing method. Choosing a PDF tool
Adobe documents redaction and sanitization in Acrobat, and its Experience League tutorial says the redaction feature is available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. Check Adobe’s current plan details and feature availability for your account before relying on a particular tier. When evaluating another PDF editor, look for explicit support for applying irreversible removal to text and images, finding repeated occurrences, and separately sanitizing hidden data. Also check whether it preserves the document features you need and whether files are processed locally or sent to a service; the sources cited here do not compare competing products or verify their data-handling terms.
