To keep sensitive data out of AI agent logs, map every place agent content is recorded, remove or transform sensitive values before telemetry is exported where possible, and verify the resulting logs. Prompts are only one source: retrieved documents, model responses, tool calls, errors, and traces can all carry secrets or personal data. Redaction should be paired with restricted access, short retention, and deletion controls.
What can leak into AI agent logs?
An agent can pass data through prompts, model responses, retrieval, memory or state, tool activity, and error handling. Logging or tracing at any of those points may retain material that was never intended for an observability system. OWASP flags sensitive data in agent context or logs as an exposure risk, and AWS notes that prompts and responses can contain user messages, retrieved documents, and personal data.
Inventory application logs, prompts and completions, retrieved content, memory snapshots, tool-call arguments and results, error messages, trace spans, and provider audit logs. Include every destination: an agent may send telemetry to more than one store or analytics service.
Decide what to exclude or transform
Start with data the log store is not authorized to hold, then classify the specific fields and content that should not be retained. OWASP’s logging guidance identifies categories such as access tokens, passwords, encryption keys, session identifiers, connection strings, sensitive personal data, payment information, source code, and commercially sensitive information. Its rule is direct: “Never log data unless it is legally sanctioned.” See the OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet.

Choose the treatment based on why the data might be needed:
- Delete: omit the value when it is not needed for debugging, security monitoring, or an approved business purpose.
- Mask: retain only a limited portion when operators need partial visibility, such as enough characters to distinguish two values.
- Pseudonymize or hash: use a stable transformed identifier only when correlation is necessary and the method is appropriate for the data and threat model.
- Encrypt: use where authorized retention is required, while recognizing that encryption is not removal and access to decryption remains consequential.
Do not rely only on field-name rules. Sensitive values can appear inside nested objects or free-form prompt text, retrieved passages, and tool payloads. No single detection method should be assumed to catch every format.

Redact before telemetry leaves the agent when possible
Filtering at or near the source reduces the chance that raw content reaches broader logging and analytics systems. AWS CloudWatch documentation describes configuring sensitive span attributes for redaction before telemetry export, OpenInference flags that hide all input or output content before spans are created, and custom span processors for more selective filtering. AWS cautions that redaction can affect integrations that depend on those attributes, so test the instrumentation and downstream dependencies before rollout. AWS is explicit about the default: “CloudWatch Omni does not automatically detect or redact personally identifiable information (PII); no data is removed unless you configure it.” Confirm the behavior of the exact product, agent framework, and instrumentation in use rather than assuming PII detection is on.

If the agent has no suitable in-process filtering, use a controlled processor at the telemetry pipeline boundary and prevent raw events from being forwarded to broader destinations. Define what happens if that processor is unavailable or cannot parse an event; the system should not silently export unfiltered data. The right failure behavior depends on operational requirements, so establish and test it for your pipeline.
Use access controls and retention as separate safeguards
Redaction changes what is recorded or retained; access control limits who can see a record. Google Cloud Logging offers field-level access controls that can hide individual LogEntry fields, such as an email address in a payload, from many users. That visibility restriction does not delete or irreversibly redact the stored value. Google also notes that field-level access controls may affect the use of Observability Analytics for the relevant log bucket, so check the analytics workflow before enabling them. Apply least privilege by role and purpose, and define retention and deletion periods for each log category. OWASP’s AI-agent security guidance also recommends data minimization, classification, retention and deletion policies, and encryption in transit and at rest. Keep raw-content retention exceptional, time-limited, and restricted when it is genuinely needed for an investigation or approved business purpose. See the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.
Check provider-specific logging behavior
- AWS CloudWatch: redaction must be configured; available input/output hiding and span processing depend on the supported instrumentation.
- Google Cloud Logging: field-level controls restrict field visibility, not the existence of values in stored records, and can affect analytics workflows.
- Dialogflow CX: a Google Cloud article describes parameter redaction and SecuritySettings-based options, but it is dated December 16, 2021. Verify current Dialogflow documentation and configuration before relying on those exact controls: Google Cloud’s Dialogflow CX article.
- Google Cloud conversational agents: Google advises against putting PHI or credentials in agent definitions and warns that resource metadata may be captured in logs. Avoid placing sensitive values in resource names, definitions, or metadata on the assumption they are outside logging: Google Cloud data handling guidance.
Test redaction across the full data path
- Prepare representative test events for prompts, completions, retrieved passages, nested fields, tool arguments and results, errors, and trace attributes. Include unexpected formats and sensitive values in free-form text.
- Send the events through the same agent, instrumentation, processor, and destinations used in production.
- Inspect the stored logs and traces to confirm the original sensitive values are absent wherever they should be excluded or transformed.
- Check that fields required for security monitoring or operations remain available, and test integrations that may depend on span attributes being redacted.
- Repeat the checks after changing a model provider, agent framework, instrumentation package, processor, or telemetry destination.
These checks establish whether your configured pipeline behaves as intended; they do not imply a universal detection rate. The cited provider documentation describes mechanisms, not a guaranteed accuracy level for detecting every sensitive value.
