How to Redact Secrets and Personal Data from AI Agent Logs

Redact sensitive agent telemetry before export, use downstream filters as defense in depth, and preserve structured logs that support operations and incident response.

Redact sensitive data before it leaves the application whenever policy says it must not be exported. Then add collector or ingestion filtering as defense in depth, and retain structured, access-controlled telemetry for operations and investigations. Downstream masking cannot undo an export that has already happened.

What can leak into an AI agent log?

Agent telemetry is broader than ordinary application messages. Depending on the system, it may contain user input, system and developer instructions, model inputs and outputs, retrieved document chunks, tool-call arguments and results, headers, identifiers, exceptions, trace attributes, and debug output. Any of these can carry credentials or personal data. OWASP identifies sensitive data in agent context or logs as an exposure risk in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Trace the entire path, not just the application’s log statement: data may pass through a collector, ingestion service, dashboards, archives, replicas, and backups. A field that looks harmless in one service can be copied into another store or embedded in free text, an error, or a nested payload.

Decide what is worth keeping

Start with data classification and the purpose of each event. Keep enough structured context to understand behavior and investigate incidents, but do not persist entire prompts, unrestricted context snapshots, or tool payloads by default. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet recommends excluding or sanitizing sensitive categories and protecting the logs that remain.

Integral 16GB Crypto-197 256-Bit Hardware Encrypted 3.0 USB Secure Flash Memory Drive - Certified to FIPS 197, Brute-Force Password Attack Protection & Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof Design
  • Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
  • Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
  • Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
  • Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
  • Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password

For many operational questions, useful records can include event type, timestamp, agent or session reference, tool name, outcome or status, duration, and a safe summary. If teams need correlation, use a pseudonymous or keyed identifier rather than a raw personal identifier where feasible. Choose among redaction, masking, sanitization, hashing, encryption, or pseudonymization according to the data’s purpose and policy; do not log credentials or sensitive personal data in plain text.

Do not rely on filtering a short list of field names or matching a few patterns as a complete solution. Sensitive values can occur under unexpected keys, inside nested objects, in headers, free text, or exception messages. OWASP’s recursive key-redaction example is illustrative, not proof that a particular filter catches every sensitive value.

Choose the filtering point

Need Filtering layer What it does and does not do
A value must not leave the application Capture-time redaction Filters before spans or logs are exported. This is the strongest boundary control, but redacted content cannot be recovered for later debugging. [AWS CloudWatch documentation]
Add a control before a telemetry backend Collector processors Can remove, modify, replace, or drop data in transit through an OpenTelemetry Collector. It is defense in depth: the data has already left the application process. [AWS CloudWatch documentation]
Catch anticipated patterns at ingestion Ingestion-time masking Can catch some patterns missed earlier, subject to supported patterns and service scope. Data has already been transmitted, so this does not meet a rule that prohibits export. [AWS CloudWatch documentation]
Limit who can see stored telemetry Read-time access scoping Restricts access to stored content; it does not prevent the original sensitive content from being stored. [AWS CloudWatch documentation]

AWS documents the environment variable AWS_REDACT_SPAN_ATTRIBUTES, OpenInference flags for hiding inputs and outputs, and a custom span-processor example for agent telemetry. These are AWS-specific options, not universal settings; its custom processor example notes OpenTelemetry SDK 1.39.0 or later. Check the current documentation and your SDK configuration before applying them. AWS also warns that capture-time redaction is irreversible and reduces what remains available for debugging. Implement redaction without losing useful observability

  1. Inventory emissions and destinations. List every agent-generated field and event—including prompts, outputs, retrieved chunks, tool arguments and results, errors, headers, tags, trace attributes, and debug output. Follow each through the application, collector, ingestion path, dashboards, archives, and backups.
  2. Set a capture policy by field and purpose. Decide what may be recorded, in what form, and for how long. Prefer safe summaries and operational metadata over full content. Document which values require removal, masking, tokenization, or a pseudonymous representation.
  3. Enforce the boundary in the application. Where sensitive data must never be exported, apply field-aware filtering before creating or exporting spans and logs. Treat a downstream collector or backend filter as an additional safeguard, not as the boundary control.
  4. Add downstream filters and test their scope. If you operate an OpenTelemetry Collector, use appropriate attributes, redaction, transform, or filter processors to remove, alter, replace, or drop data. Validate expected behavior with representative nested payloads, free text, and errors. In AWS, CloudWatch Logs masking does not automatically apply to telemetry in the CloudWatch Dataset; verify coverage for each destination. [AWS CloudWatch documentation]
  5. Preserve correlation and protect the records. Keep structured event metadata and trace context needed to relate agent actions and tool invocations. Restrict access, monitor access and integrity, secure transmission, and define retention and deletion controls based on applicable legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements. OWASP MCP08:2025 cautions that privacy concerns can lead to overly broad log suppression; field-level redaction or pseudonymization can preserve useful traceability. [OWASP MCP08:2025]

What to do if a secret reaches the logs

Treat an exposed credential as compromised. Revoke it and issue a replacement, then identify and remove exposed copies from affected systems while maintaining log integrity. Determine who could access the data and whether the credential was used. Review the incident’s scope across ingestion pipelines, replicas, exports, dashboards, archives, and backups. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet recommends revoking and rotating exposed secrets and removing them from logs while preserving integrity.

Integral 4GB Crypto-197 256-Bit 3.0 USB Flash Drive Encrypted - FIPS 197 Certified, Brute Force Password Attack Protection & Waterproof Double Layer Design
  • Certified to FIPS 197 - U.S. Government Approved High Level Information Security Standard.
  • Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
  • Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
  • Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
  • Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.

Do not respond with uncontrolled deletion of every related record. Preserve evidence and records that must be retained, while following a controlled remediation and retention process. The appropriate retention period depends on applicable requirements; there is no universal duration for agent logs. Technical guidance alone does not determine legal compliance, which varies by jurisdiction and context.
