Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Confirm the rollout dates, compare consistent periods in Search Console, and rule out measurement, technical, security, spam, demand, and migration issues before changing content. If the decline is large and sustained, assess the affected pages and the site as a whole, then make durable improvements for readers. Google does not promise a recovery or a fixed recovery timeline.
Confirm the update and choose a fair comparison
Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the update’s start and end dates. Wait at least a full week after the rollout completes before drawing conclusions from Search Console, as Google recommends. Compare the week after the rollout with the week before it began, then investigate the queries and pages that changed. The timing is a useful clue, not proof of cause.

Map where and how traffic changed
Use Search Console’s Performance report and a sufficiently long date range. Google recommends looking at up to 16 months of data to spot seasonal patterns, and comparing periods that make sense for your site. Do not treat a change in clicks alone as a ranking diagnosis.

- Compare clicks and impressions. If both fell, visibility may have declined; if impressions stayed similar while clicks dropped, investigate whether the mix of queries, positions, or search appearances changed.
- Find the affected areas. Segment by query, page, country, device, search appearance, and search type. Identify whether the loss is site-wide, concentrated in a page group, or limited to individual URLs.
- Separate search surfaces. Review Web, Images, Video, and News separately where relevant; a change in one does not necessarily describe the others.
- Prioritize by impact. Review pages with the largest click losses and compare their position changes with the rest of the site.
These comparisons help distinguish a broad visibility change from a page-specific issue, a change in query demand, or a shift limited to a particular country or device.

Rule out other causes before editing content
Google’s traffic-drop debugging guide identifies several causes that can coincide with an update. Check them before attributing the decline to a ranking change.
- Measurement or reporting: Check Search Console’s data anomalies and confirm the dates and search type you are comparing.
- Crawling and indexing: Review Search Console reports for server availability, robots.txt blocks, not-found pages, noindex directives, and other indexing problems. Google’s Search Essentials explains technical requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.
- Security or policy action: Check Search Console’s Security Issues and Manual Actions reports. Review Google’s spam policies for practices that may violate them.
- Seasonality and demand: Compare affected topics in Google Trends. Search interest can change even when a site has not.
- Recent migration or site move: Review URL changes and redirects. A move can cause temporary ranking fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes URLs.
Decide whether the decline warrants content changes
Match the response to the scale and persistence of the loss. A small position shift may reverse without intervention; Google advises against drastic changes to pages that are already performing well. For a sustained, large decline, examine both the site overall and the pages most affected.

Assess usefulness and reliability
Use Google’s people-first content self-assessment to ask whether the work is original, complete, reliable, and useful to its intended audience. Consider whether it demonstrates first-hand expertise where that matters, answers the reader’s likely question, and gives enough context to be trustworthy. An honest review by people unaffiliated with the site can reveal gaps that an in-house team overlooks.

In an August 15, 2024 post about a core update, Search Advocate John Mueller said the update was intended to show more content people find genuinely useful and less that feels made just to perform well on Search. That describes the stated direction of that update, not a promise that any particular edit will restore traffic.

Improve the page, not just its ranking signals
Prioritize edits that make a real difference to readers: correct outdated information, fill important gaps, improve clarity and readability, and make the page easier to navigate. Avoid quick fixes based on rumors about isolated ranking factors. Treat deleting a page as a last resort, and consider it only when the content cannot be salvaged.
Check page experience without treating a score as a cure
Google describes page experience as a collection of factors, including Core Web Vitals, secure delivery, mobile usability, intrusive interstitials, distracting ads, and clear separation of the main content. Review these areas when they could obstruct people using the page, but do not treat a passing Core Web Vitals report or third-party tool score as a guarantee of top rankings. See Google’s page-experience guidance.

Reassess after making meaningful improvements
Google says changes may show effects within days, but systems may take several months to recognize sustained site-wide improvement. Reassess after a few weeks using comparable periods and the same page, query, country, device, and search-type segments you used to diagnose the drop. Look for sustained patterns rather than reacting to short-term movement. There is no guaranteed recovery date, and improvement is not limited to the period immediately following a core update.
