The right way to recover access depends on whether the administrator signs in with a personal Microsoft account, a local account, or a work or school account. First identify the account type—and check whether you forgot the account password or only the Windows Hello PIN. Use the matching official recovery route below; if no other administrator account is available for a local account, Microsoft’s documented fallback is to reset the PC.
Identify the account and credential you need to reset
At the Windows sign-in screen, check which account is selected and what sign-in options are offered. A personal Microsoft account, a local Windows account, and an organization-managed work or school account have different recovery paths.

A Windows Hello PIN is not the same as a Microsoft account password. If you can sign in with another method and only forgot the PIN, use the PIN reset option on the sign-in screen rather than changing the account password. Microsoft explains the distinction and sign-in options in its Windows sign-in options guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReset a personal Microsoft account password
- On the Windows sign-in screen, choose I forgot my password if it is shown. You can also begin recovery in a browser using Microsoft’s forgotten Microsoft account password instructions.
- Complete the identity check using one of the recovery methods offered for the account.
- After Microsoft verifies your identity, set a new password and use it to sign in.
If none of the offered verification methods is available, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper to find the next supported route. Microsoft Support agents cannot send password reset links or access and change account details; the account holder must complete the recovery checks.

Reset a local account password
Use the sign-in security questions or a prepared reset disk
For a local account, choose the password reset option on the sign-in screen and answer the security questions that were set up for the account. If you created a password reset disk before getting locked out, you can use it instead. Microsoft’s local account password reset instructions describe these options.
Use another administrator account on the same PC
If you can sign in to a different administrator account on that PC, Microsoft documents changing the other local account’s password through Computer Management. Open Computer Management, then go to Local Users and Groups > Users, right-click the target account, and choose the password-change option. Menu availability can vary by Windows edition and device configuration; if those labels are missing, follow Microsoft’s support instructions rather than trying an unsupported workaround.

If there is no other administrator account

Before starting, consider whether you can still retrieve important files or make a backup. The reset may affect files, apps, and settings depending on the option selected.

Understand what resetting the PC can remove
Microsoft describes Reset this PC as reinstalling Windows. The selected reset option determines what is kept:
- Keep my files: personal files are preserved, but apps and settings are removed.
- Remove everything: personal files, apps, and settings are removed.
Back up important files where possible before resetting. If the device is encrypted, have its BitLocker recovery key available; Windows may require it to complete the reset. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for reset details.
Prepare a local-account reset disk before you need it
If you use a local account, you can create a password reset disk on a USB flash drive while signed in to that account. It is a preventive measure, not a way to unlock an account after the fact: buying or plugging in a new drive after lockout does not create the disk needed for recovery. Microsoft’s instructions to create a local-account password reset disk also note that this option does not apply to Microsoft accounts.
