If the files matter, stop using the flash device now. Cancel any prompt to format, initialize, or repair it, and do not save recovered files back onto it. A device that stays connected and reports a plausible capacity may have a connection, mounting, partition, or filesystem problem, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. Physical damage, freezing, repeated disconnections, or implausible device information are reasons to stop DIY attempts and seek professional recovery advice.
First, protect the files
- Cancel destructive prompts. If Windows says you need to format a disk before you can use it, or the system offers to initialize or repair the device, cancel. SanDisk warns that erase and low-level-format operations destroy data and cannot be undone.
- Stop writing to the device. Do not copy files onto it, run erase or reset utilities, or save recovered files to it. Further use and writes can complicate recovery.
- Unplug an unstable or damaged device. If it is bent, cracked, unusually hot, freezing the computer, repeatedly disconnecting, or reporting an implausible capacity, stop testing it. Further connection attempts may not help and can add risk.
A connection sound or an entry in a device list only shows that some part of the connection is being detected; it does not prove the stored memory is readable.

What “won’t read” can mean
Labels such as “USB device not recognized,” “not detected,” “RAW,” and “Local Disk” describe different symptoms, not a diagnosis. A problem may be with the computer or connection, with how the partition or filesystem is being mounted, or with the flash device’s controller, memory, connector, or other hardware. The same symptom can have different causes, so do not choose a repair or format operation based on the label alone.

Decide whether cautious software recovery is appropriate
Consider software recovery only when the device appears physically intact, remains consistently connected, and reports a plausible capacity. These are practical caution checks, not a validated test or a guarantee that software can recover the files.

Kingston cautions that recovery software may leave some files lost; software cannot be assumed to address controller, NAND-memory, connector, or other hardware failures. SanDisk offers self-help recovery software for lost files, but that does not establish that every unreadable device is recoverable.
Try only low-risk checks on a stable device
If the device is intact and not behaving erratically, a small number of cautious checks may help distinguish a computer-side issue from a device-side one. Stop if the device starts freezing, disconnecting, or behaving differently.

- Cancel any format, initialize, or repair prompt. Do not accept an option that could alter the source while the files matter.
- Check whether the device appears in the computer’s storage-management interface. Seeing it there does not mean its files are readable; note whether its capacity and status look plausible, and do not start a repair or format.
- If it remains stable, try a different USB port or another computer once. Avoid repeated connection cycles, especially if the device shows any sign of physical damage or instability.
- If the computer detects the device consistently and the situation appears suitable for software recovery, use a recovery tool only with a separate destination drive for recovered files.
For platform-specific troubleshooting, consult SanDisk’s guided support for USB flash drives. The available steps vary by operating system and device, so do not apply a repair instruction that would write to or reset the source while you still need its data.

Ask a qualified data-recovery provider for an evaluation rather than continuing DIY attempts when the device has physical damage, repeatedly disconnects, freezes the computer, reports an implausible capacity, or contains files you cannot replace. Tell the provider what happened and which prompts or tools have already been used.

SanDisk says it does not perform recovery itself and directs customers to recovery partners; it also disclaims responsibility for those partners’ services. Evaluate any provider independently, including its service terms and privacy practices. A provider’s success-rate or guarantee statement is its own claim, not a general prediction for all unreadable flash devices.

Utilities intended to repair, erase, or restore a flash drive are not first-line file-recovery steps. Transcend describes JetFlash Online Recovery as restoring a drive to factory-default settings and advises backing up data first. If the files are still wanted, do not run a reset or factory-restoration utility before recovery; consider repair or reuse only after the data has been recovered or is no longer needed.
