If an AI agent deleted a file, stop the agent and any scripts or sync activity that may keep changing the affected storage. Then check the local Trash or Recycle Bin, the cloud service’s deleted-items area, backups or version history, and—if it was a project file—Git. The right recovery route depends on where the file lived; there is no universal AI-agent undo or recovery feature established for every product.
Can I undo an AI agent deleting files?
Possibly, but recovery usually comes from the storage layer rather than the agent itself: a trash folder, cloud recycle bin, backup, version history, or version-control repository. Whether that copy exists depends on the file’s location, sync and backup settings, and how long ago it was deleted. Product-specific workspace history or checkpoints may help, but check the agent’s current documentation rather than assuming it has an undo log.

Before restoring anything, identify the file’s path, approximate deletion time, operating system, storage location, cloud account, and agent or workspace. Avoid cleanup, repository garbage collection, broad restore operations, or installing recovery software on the affected drive until you have checked safer recovery options. Further writes can reduce the chance of recovering deleted local data; when using a recovery utility, save recovered files to a different drive if possible.
Where should I look first?
- Stop further changes. Pause the agent, scripts, and sync actions that could alter the files or overwrite recoverable data.
- Check local trash. Look in Windows Recycle Bin or Mac Trash. Cloud-only synced items may not appear there.
- Check the cloud service. Open its deleted-items or recycle-bin area on the web, even if you already checked local trash.
- Check backups and version history. Look for a restore point from before the deletion. Restore only the needed file or folder where possible.
- For a coding project, inspect Git first. Review status and diffs before restoring a path, because a restore may replace content in the working tree.
Recover deleted files on Windows
Check the Recycle Bin and OneDrive
Start with the Windows Recycle Bin. If the file was in OneDrive, also check the OneDrive recycle bin on the web: an online-only item may not be present in the PC’s Recycle Bin. Microsoft describes local and cloud recovery in its OneDrive delete-and-restore guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use File History if it was configured
File History can restore deleted content or earlier versions of files and folders when it was set up and has a suitable saved copy. Follow Microsoft’s File History instructions and select the relevant earlier version.
Try Windows File Recovery only after checking backups
If the file is not in trash or a backup, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is a command-line utility for attempting recovery from local storage, including internal drives, external drives, and USB devices. Follow the current Windows File Recovery guidance, and direct recovered output to another drive when possible. Recovery is not guaranteed, particularly if the deleted data has been overwritten.

Recover files deleted from OneDrive
Open OneDrive on the web and inspect its recycle bin. Microsoft’s current guidance documents a recovery window of up to 30 days for personal accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts, unless an administrator has changed the retention setting. These are service windows, not guarantees that every item can be restored; Microsoft says items permanently deleted from the recycle bin cannot be recovered through that route. See Microsoft’s deleted-file recovery guidance.

Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to undo file and folder activity over a period of up to 30 days. This rolls back broader account activity rather than recovering only one file. Review the activity and restore point carefully: files created after that point may be moved to the recycle bin.

Recover deleted files on a Mac or in iCloud Drive
Restore from Mac Trash or Time Machine
Check Mac Trash first. If you have a Time Machine backup from before the deletion, open the folder where the file belonged, enter Time Machine, navigate to the backup, select the item, and restore it. Apple says the restored item returns to its original location. Follow Apple’s Time Machine restore instructions.
Check iCloud Recently Deleted
For a file stored in iCloud Drive, check Recently Deleted or iCloud.com Data Recovery. Apple documents recovery of deleted iCloud Drive and app files within 30 days; availability depends on the item still being within that window. See Apple’s iCloud deleted-file recovery guide.

Recover deleted files in a Git project
Git can help if the file was tracked. Before restoring, run git status and inspect relevant diffs so you understand what is currently in the working tree. A tracked path can be restored from the index with:
git restore -- path/to/file
Replace path/to/file with the file’s repository-relative path. Restoring a path can replace its current working-tree content, so save or inspect any changes you want to keep first. For a version from a previous commit, identify the relevant commit and use it as the restore source; Git’s restore manual explains the command’s source options.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
If a commit or reference was lost, reflogs or git fsck may reveal repository objects that remain. Git’s data recovery documentation describes these approaches. They cannot guarantee recovery of a file that was untracked and never staged, and you should not run git gc or pruning during initial recovery attempts.
What if the file was on Linux or only in an agent workspace?
Recovery on Linux depends on the filesystem, distribution, snapshots, and storage behavior; there is no single safe procedure established for all systems. Check the desktop environment’s trash, snapshots, backups, cloud sync, and Git state. For important files with no backup, seek qualified recovery help before writing to the affected volume.
For an agent-specific workspace, check that product’s current documentation for history, checkpoints, or recovery options. Do not assume an agent has a recycle bin or undo log unless its documentation confirms it.

How to reduce the chance of losing files next time
- Keep important work in a version-controlled repository, and commit changes you may need to recover. Git does not cover untracked files until they are added.
- Enable and periodically check a backup system such as File History or Time Machine, or a cloud service with version history. A backup drive helps only if a usable copy was saved before deletion.
- Before allowing an agent to make broad file changes, use an isolated workspace or a checkpoint feature if the product documents one.
- Know where synced files’ cloud recycle bins and restore controls are, and note that retention settings and recovery windows can vary by account or administrator.
