Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSign in to the exact Google, Microsoft, or Apple account that held the file, search its web interface, then check Trash, Recycle Bin, or Recently Deleted and restore the item if it is still listed. If it is missing, first rule out the wrong account, a move, or lost sharing access. Recovery windows differ by provider and account type; a permanently deleted file may not be recoverable.
Check the right account and deleted-items folder first
- Sign in online to the account that held the file. If you use multiple personal, work, or school accounts, check each one. A file in one account will not necessarily appear in another.
- Search the cloud service before assuming the file is gone. It may have been moved, placed in another folder, or shared with you rather than owned by you.
- Open the provider’s deleted-items area. Look for Trash in Google Drive, Recycle bin in OneDrive, or Recently Deleted in iCloud Drive. Select the file and use the provider’s Restore or Recover command if it is listed.
- If it is not listed, check the recovery options and account type below. For a work or school account, contact the organization’s administrator promptly; retention settings and recovery controls may be managed by the organization.
These services have different holding periods. A file’s absence from a local computer’s Recycle Bin or Mac Trash does not establish whether it is still recoverable from the cloud.

Recovery windows at a glance
| Service and account | Deleted-items window | After permanent deletion |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | 30 days in Trash, according to Google Drive Help. | Google says some files deleted forever may meet conditions for recovery, but it does not guarantee recovery of every file. See Google’s recovery instructions. |
| OneDrive personal | 30 days in the Recycle bin, according to Microsoft’s OneDrive recovery guidance. | Microsoft says items permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle bin cannot be restored. |
| OneDrive work or school | 93 days, unless an administrator changed the retention setting, according to Microsoft’s OneDrive recovery guidance. | Ask the organization’s administrator about available options; the organization may control retention and recovery. |
| iCloud Drive | 30 days in Recently Deleted, according to Apple Support. | Apple says files permanently removed cannot be restored. Eligible files may also appear in iCloud Data Recovery; see Apple’s iCloud.com recovery guide. |
These are the providers’ stated periods, not a guarantee that a particular file can be recovered. Organization settings can affect OneDrive work and school accounts.

If it is still in Trash
- Open Google Drive in a browser using the account that held the file.
- Open Trash.
- Select or right-click the file, then choose Restore.
Google says items remain in Trash for 30 days; emptying Trash removes them immediately. After the retention period, Google describes files as deleted forever. It notes that some files deleted forever may qualify for recovery, but its guidance does not establish that all such files can be recovered. Follow Google’s recovery instructions if the file has been permanently deleted.

If the file is missing from Trash
Use Drive search and review the file’s activity where available. Google’s missing-file troubleshooting guide explains that a permission change, a move into a folder you cannot access, or loss of access to a shared drive can look like deletion. A file that has lost its original folder may be unorganized rather than deleted; Google suggests searching Drive with is:unorganized.
Recover a file from OneDrive
Restore an item from the Recycle bin
- Open OneDrive online and confirm the account shown is the one that held the file.

Roll back OneDrive activity if you have Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to roll back file and folder activity to a point within the last 30 days. Items created after the selected restore point are sent to the Recycle bin. This rolls back OneDrive activity; it is not a promise that a permanently deleted file will be recovered. Follow Microsoft’s OneDrive recovery guide for the available restore steps.

If the file is not in OneDrive
Microsoft recommends searching OneDrive online, checking the Recycle bin and Personal Vault, and confirming the account. If the file may never have synced, check the device where it was created. A computer Recycle Bin or Mac Trash may help with a locally deleted copy, but online-only files do not appear there. For a work or school account, ask the administrator to investigate if ordinary recovery does not work. See Microsoft’s missing-file guide.

Recover a file from iCloud Drive
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Files and tap Browse.
- Open Recently Deleted.
- Select the file and tap Recover.
On iCloud.com
- Sign in to iCloud.com with the Apple Account that held the file.
- Open iCloud Drive, then Recently Deleted.
- Select the file and choose Recover.
Apple says iCloud Drive files can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. Its iCloud Data Recovery page may also offer Restore Files for eligible files. While using Data Recovery, do not browse, edit, or delete iCloud Drive data in another window, as that can interrupt the process. Apple says permanently removed files cannot be restored. See Apple’s missing-file guidance and its iCloud.com recovery guide.
When a file looks deleted but may still exist
- Wrong account: Check the other personal or organization accounts you use with that provider.
- Moved or unorganized: Search by filename and check likely folders. In Drive, also try
is:unorganized. - Shared access changed: The owner may have moved or removed the file, changed permissions, or removed your access to a shared drive. Ask the owner or organization administrator to check.
- Never synced: Look on the device where the file was created, including its local deleted-items folder. A cloud-only file will not be recovered from that device’s trash.
What to expect after permanent deletion
Emptying a provider’s deleted-items folder or passing its retention window can make recovery impossible. Google describes possible recovery for some permanently deleted Drive files, subject to conditions, but does not guarantee it. Microsoft says items permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle bin cannot be restored, and Apple says permanently removed iCloud Drive files cannot be restored. For work or school accounts, contact the administrator because organization-managed settings may change what remains available.
