If information is missing after restoring an iPhone or iPad, first leave the device connected to Wi-Fi and power and check whether its restore or iCloud sync is still in progress. Then identify where that type of data was stored: an iCloud or computer backup, a separate iCloud sync service, or a third-party account. Only try a different backup after preserving the device’s current data.
1. Let the restore and syncing finish
An iCloud restore can continue after you finish setting up the device. Its duration depends on backup size and network speed; apps and other content may take hours or days to download. Keep the iPhone or iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power, and check the iCloud Backup area in Settings for a restore-in-progress indication. Apple says, “You can’t restore from a backup over a cellular Internet connection.” Apple’s iCloud restore troubleshooting guide explains what to check if restoration fails.

Do not assume that content is permanently gone just because it has not appeared yet. If the restore appears stalled, verify that a backup exists, try another Wi-Fi network, and check whether another available backup can be selected.

Not all information is restored from the device backup. Some categories sync independently, and some belong to another account or app provider. Apple’s guide to missing information after an iCloud Backup restore describes these differences.

3. Check for another backup without risking current data
If the missing information should have been in a backup but is still absent, compare the available iCloud and computer backups by date and size. A different backup may contain the item, but restoring it can replace the device’s current contents. Apple advises: “Always back up your current data on your computer before you try to restore from iCloud Backup.”
- Preserve the current device state: connect the iPhone or iPad to a computer and make a computer backup before attempting another iCloud restore.
- Compare available backups: during Apple’s restore flow, review the available backups’ dates and sizes and choose only one that is likely to contain the missing information.
- Restore from a computer backup if appropriate: use Finder on a supported Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes on older supported systems. Connect the device, select the backup, and enter its password if it is encrypted.
A computer restore requires a USB data connection. Check the ports on both the device and computer when choosing a compatible cable. An encrypted backup cannot be restored without its password.

4. Check iCloud.com and category-specific recovery
Sign in to iCloud.com and look for the recovery option for the missing category. Apple lists recovery options for calendars, contacts, iCloud Drive and iWork, Photos, Mail, Notes, Reminders, and Safari bookmarks; what appears can vary by device or account. Use Apple’s data recovery page for the available recovery tools.
Files deleted from iCloud Drive
Apple says supported files deleted from iCloud Drive and other apps can be recovered at iCloud.com within 30 days. Items permanently removed cannot be recovered through this feature. Apple also cautions against changing iCloud Drive data while recovery is underway. See Apple’s instructions for recovering deleted files on iCloud.com.

Deleted messages
Messages has its own Recently Deleted feature. Apple Support’s guidance, checked in 2026, says it requires iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16.1 or later and applies only to messages deleted within the previous 30 to 40 days. Messages deleted before updating to those operating-system versions cannot be restored with this feature. Follow Apple’s steps to recover deleted messages.

- Confirm that the backup exists and that you are using the intended Apple Account.
- Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi; cellular internet cannot be used to restore an iCloud backup.
- If the restore errors, try a different Wi-Fi network and review other available backups before choosing one.
- For computer backups, confirm that the computer recognizes the device and that you have the encrypted-backup password, if required.
If there is no relevant backup, synced copy, or eligible recovery item, Apple’s guidance does not promise recovery of the missing information. A cable or storage accessory can help connect a device to a computer, but it cannot recreate a backup that was never made. The cited Apple guidance does not establish third-party recovery software as a reliable way to retrieve data absent from backups or cloud sync.
