After a VPS reboot, restart the encoder with the existing YouTube stream URL and current stream key. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. A reboot alone is not documented as a reason to create a new stream key; confirm the stream’s state in YouTube rather than assuming the event resumed.
Recover the stream after the VPS comes back online
- Confirm the VPS is reachable. Check that the server has booted and that the encoder process is running. If it did not start automatically, launch it using the service, container, or deployment procedure used to install it. The command is specific to your operating system and setup; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe a VPS startup command.
- Check the encoder’s destination and credential. It needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Find the current values in Live Control Room and confirm they match the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as the credential an encoder uses to send a feed, so treat it like a password: keep it out of screenshots, public instructions, and exposed logs. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. If auto-start is not enabled, click Go live to begin the broadcast. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow is to start the encoder, wait for preview, and then go live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Verify that viewers can watch. Check stream health in Live Control Room, then open the channel or event’s watch page to confirm it is accessible and that audio and video are working. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream; if you have a backup encoder, test its failover before relying on it. See YouTube live streaming tips.
What the reboot does—and does not—mean
A VPS reboot stops the encoder process while the server is down. Once the server is back, the feed must be sent again by a running encoder. YouTube documents stream keys, auto-start and auto-stop settings, and the steps for starting scheduled encoder streams; it does not guarantee that every interrupted event will resume automatically after a reboot. Check the actual state in Live Control Room and on the watch page instead of treating a successful encoder connection as proof the event is public and live.

YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings that can let the encoder start or stop a stream. Check the setting on the specific stream; do not assume it is enabled. With a scheduled event and auto-start off, an incoming encoder feed can reach preview without the event being live to viewers: click Go live when the preview is ready. With auto-start enabled, still verify the stream’s state and viewer access.
Reboot recovery is not the same as archiving
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That is an archiving behavior, not a promise that an interrupted stream will restart or that its prior event will resume after a VPS reboot. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Troubleshoot a feed that will not come back
| Symptom | What to check and do |
|---|---|
| The encoder process is not running | Start it with the normal service or container procedure for your installation. To avoid depending on an interactive login after future reboots, configure the deployment to launch the encoder on boot; the exact setup is platform-specific. |
| The encoder reports a start error | Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder configuration. If your encoder uses account sign-in rather than a key, YouTube directs users to the encoder software’s support. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream. |
| The encoder times out or cannot connect | Recheck the exact server URL and selected protocol, and verify that the encoder supports RTMPS if you are using it. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists incorrect URL or protocol, unsupported RTMPS, and connection timeouts among connection issues. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. |
| The feed connects, but the event is not live or public | Look at the event in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, confirm the preview has appeared and click Go live if auto-start is off. Check the stream’s auto-start setting rather than assuming the encoder connection started the event. |
| The stream key may have been exposed or changed | Reset the key in Live Control Room if it is compromised, then replace the old value in the encoder configuration. A reset invalidates the previous key, so the encoder must use the updated one. See Manage live stream settings. |
| The stream is unstable and a backup encoder is available | Test failover before the event and monitor the preview and stream health. Do not wait for a live failure to discover whether the backup is configured correctly; YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover when a backup exists. See YouTube live streaming tips. |
Make the encoder return after future VPS reboots
Configure the encoder using the process manager or container setup already used on your VPS so it starts after the server boots. The correct implementation depends on the operating system and whether the encoder runs as a service, container, or interactive process, so there is no safe universal command to paste here. After configuring it, test a reboot before the next scheduled broadcast: confirm the process returns, the feed reaches preview, and the event can be made live. Keep the stream key in the deployment’s protected configuration rather than in public logs or documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream from pre-recorded videos rather than restarting a VPS-based encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not resume your existing encoder feed or go live from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price; automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. YouTube’s copyright and other applicable policies still matter for the content you stream. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
