Record your screen with the built-in tool on Windows or Mac, save the video, then upload it through YouTube Studio. Recording and uploading are separate steps: YouTube says it does not have a webcam feature for recording videos on your computer.
Before you record
Decide which part of the screen viewers need to see and whether you want narration. Close unrelated windows and silence notifications so private information does not appear in the recording. For a short, straightforward capture, start with your computer’s built-in recorder. If you need to select capture sources or configure audio devices, OBS offers more setup options; its menus and controls can vary by operating system and version.

Upload the saved video in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the top-right corner, select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the video file you saved.
- Enter or review the title and other video details.
- Choose a visibility setting: Private, Unlisted, or Public. You can also schedule publication if that suits your needs.
- Save or publish the video. Uploading imports the file; publishing makes it available to viewers according to its visibility setting.
If you close the upload window before choosing visibility, YouTube says the video is saved as private. YouTube recommends trying a test upload and using privacy settings while you get familiar with the process.
Processing, quality, and upload limits
YouTube converts uploaded video to the highest resolution available for playback. HD and 4K processing can take longer; processing time varies with quality, video length, format, and traffic. A video may therefore appear at lower resolutions while higher-quality versions are still processing.

Troubleshoot common recording and upload problems
- You cannot find Record in Snipping Tool: Confirm your Windows version and Snipping Tool installation, then check for the current app version. The documented shortcut is Windows logo key + Shift + R on Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance.
- A Mac app window appears blank or is missing: Some apps block recording their windows. Try recording a different area or use content you are permitted to capture.
- The video is still low resolution after upload: Higher-resolution processing may still be underway. Allow more time; YouTube says processing time depends on quality, length, format, and traffic.
- Your video is private after closing the upload flow: Reopen its YouTube Studio details and select the intended visibility setting.
- You need to record specific audio devices or multiple capture sources: Use a configurable capture tool such as OBS and verify its source and audio settings before recording.
