To record yourself and your screen, capture the display or app window, add a camera view if you want one, and select the microphone you intend to use. The best setup depends on whether you need flexible controls, a guided capture-and-sharing workflow, or a quick mobile recording. Before the full take, make a short test and check the picture, speech, and captured screen.
Choose a way to record your screen and camera
A screen-and-camera video usually combines separate sources: the screen or window, the camera, and one or more audio inputs. The options below differ in setup, control, and eligibility; no one method is best for every recording.

If you want to publish on YouTube, record and save the video separately, then upload it. YouTube Help says computer webcam recording is not built into YouTube; its record-and-upload guide covers uploading.

Create a scene, add a display or window capture source, then add a video capture source for the webcam. Move and resize the camera layer so it does not cover important text or controls. OBS scenes can combine and layer sources; its overview guide explains the source model.

Set up Loom or Zoom Clips
In Loom’s desktop app, choose full-screen, window, or an eligible custom-size capture, then select the camera and microphone you need. Check its audio indicator before recording. Some features depend on plan; Loom’s setup guide describes the workflow.
For Zoom Clips, first confirm that Clips is enabled for your account. Choose the mode that matches the video—screenshare and video, screenshare only, or video only—and then select an available source and resolution. The Zoom Clips guide documents the options.

Record an iPhone or iPad screen with microphone narration
- Open Control Centre and use the screen-recording control.
- To narrate, turn on the microphone in the screen-recording controls before starting the capture.
- Stop the recording when finished and review the saved video. If the app restricts recording, the capture may not include its content or audio.

Capture only the display, window, or region needed for the explanation. Close unrelated windows and notifications when practical, and enlarge small interface text before recording. If you use a webcam overlay, position it away from essential controls and labels. In OBS, sources can be moved, resized, layered, and cropped.

Improve lighting without buying equipment
When possible, face a window or another soft light source. Avoid putting a bright window directly behind you, which can leave your face difficult to see. A separate light is not a prerequisite if the available light already makes you clear.

Get clean, understandable speech
- Record in a quiet space and place the microphone close to you.
- Speak at a moderate pace and volume.
- Watch the app’s audio indicator or meters to confirm the intended microphone is active.

Choose a realistic recording resolution
A resolution choice in a menu does not guarantee the same output quality on every setup. The result can depend on the app, device capability, camera, plan, and recording mode.
- Loom desktop: Loom says eligible plans and compatible devices can record up to 4K; Starter desktop recording is limited to up to 720p. Loom also notes that webcam recordings may be lower quality than screen recordings. See its quality documentation.
- Zoom Clips: Zoom lists Auto (1080p), 1080p, and 720p choices, with 360p available in some video-only cases. These are Clips settings, not a universal quality standard. See the Zoom Clips guide.
- Zoom video calls: Zoom’s published bandwidth guidance for 1080p HD video calling is 3.8 Mbps down and 3.0 Mbps up for both 1:1 and group calls. This is Zoom’s guidance for video calling—not a general bandwidth requirement for making a local screen recording. See Zoom’s system requirements.
Make a test recording before the full take
Record a short sample and play it back. Check the actual output rather than relying only on a preview or settings menu:
- The intended screen, window, or region appears, without unrelated content.
- The camera is visible and does not cover important information.
- The microphone meter responds when you speak, and the recorded speech is understandable.
- Small screen text is readable at the size viewers will see it.
- Audio and video continue together through the sample.

Write a short outline or a few bullet points so the explanation stays on track without sounding scripted. Keep the screen actions in the same order as the explanation: show the relevant area, perform the step, and allow viewers a moment to read the result.
