How to Record Vinyl Through an Audio Interface and Get Clean Sound

Record vinyl through an audio interface by matching the turntable’s PHONO or LINE output to the right input, preserving both stereo channels, and setting gain with a test passage.

To record a conventional turntable through an audio interface, put a phono preamp between the turntable’s PHONO output and the interface’s line inputs. The preamp boosts the cartridge’s low-level signal and applies the RIAA playback equalization used on most records made from the 1950s onward. Then send the left and right channels to two interface inputs, select them as a stereo source in your recording software, and set gain while a loud passage is playing.

You may already have the necessary preamp: check for a PHONO/LINE switch on the turntable or a PHONO input and line-level output on a receiver. A USB turntable follows a different route: connect it to the computer and select its USB audio device in the recording app.

Can you connect a turntable directly to an audio interface?

It depends on the turntable’s output. A standard cartridge’s PHONO signal is too weak for a normal line input, and it has not received the playback equalization needed for a properly balanced recording. Connecting it directly to an interface line input will usually produce a very quiet, tinny-sounding recording.

The usual analog signal chain is:

Turntable PHONO output → phono preamp PHONO input → preamp LINE output → two audio-interface inputs → recording software

RCA connectors alone do not tell you whether an output is PHONO or LINE. Check the labels and manuals for your turntable, preamp, receiver, and interface before connecting them.

When direct connection works

If your turntable has a built-in phono stage and a PHONO/LINE switch, set it to LINE and connect its line-level output to the interface’s line inputs. Do not route an already line-level signal through a second phono stage: a line output connected to a PHONO input can become excessively loud or distorted.

A USB turntable can be recorded digitally over USB. Connect it to the computer and select the turntable’s USB audio device as the recording input rather than choosing an unrelated built-in microphone.

Do you need a phono preamp?

You need a phono stage somewhere in the signal path when using a conventional turntable’s PHONO output. It performs two jobs: it raises the cartridge signal to line level and reverses the RIAA equalization applied during record playback. That correction is why a bare phono signal can sound both quiet and thin.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

A separate stereo phono preamp is one option, but first check whether existing equipment already provides the stage:

  • Turntable with PHONO/LINE switch: Select LINE and connect to the interface’s paired line inputs.
  • Receiver or integrated amplifier with PHONO input: Connect the turntable there, then route a suitable line-level or tape output from the receiver to the interface. Follow the receiver’s instructions and use a fixed line-level output where available.
  • Turntable with PHONO output and no suitable receiver: Use a stereo phono preamp with a PHONO input and line-level output.

If you need a cable, its connectors depend on the preamp’s outputs and the interface’s supported inputs. Choose one that connects the preamp’s left and right line outputs to two interface inputs; there is no single cable type that fits every setup.

How do you connect and configure the interface?

Connect both stereo channels

  1. Connect the turntable’s PHONO output to a phono preamp, unless the turntable is already set to LINE or a receiver is providing the phono stage.
  2. Connect the preamp’s left and right line outputs to two interface inputs. Match the interface’s supported connectors and select line mode where the hardware provides that choice.
  3. Connect the interface to the computer and open your recording software.

Vinyl is stereo, so use both left and right channels. In the recording application, create a stereo track and assign the corresponding pair of interface inputs. Focusrite Support and Ableton Help document this general preamp-to-paired-input workflow; the exact controls vary by interface and software.

Choose the correct input in the software

Select the audio interface as the recording device and assign the inputs connected to the turntable. For a USB turntable, select its USB audio device instead. Menu names and locations depend on the operating system and software version, so confirm the selected device and watch for input-meter activity rather than relying on a particular menu path.

Set gain with a test passage

  1. Start playback at a loud section of the record.
  2. Watch the recording meters and adjust interface gain so the signal does not overload.
  3. Make a short test recording and listen for hum, distortion, unusually low level, or a missing channel before recording a full side.

There is no universal gain-knob position or meter target: results depend on the interface, its driver, and the recording software. Set the level using your own loud passage and check the resulting recording.

Can you record a phono signal and apply RIAA equalization later?

Yes, but direct phono capture followed by software RIAA correction is an advanced workflow, not the straightforward setup for most people. Audacity describes using a suitable high-gain input to record the signal dry and applying the RIAA curve afterward. The ordinary approach is to use a hardware phono stage before the interface so the recording reaches the software at line level with playback equalization already applied.

How do you record a USB turntable in Audacity?

  1. Connect the USB turntable to the computer and confirm that the computer recognizes it.
  2. In Audacity, choose the turntable’s USB audio device as the recording input. Device names and menu placement can vary by operating system and software version.
  3. Set the recording channels to stereo when capturing a stereo source.
  4. Play a passage and check that the meters show input activity on both channels. Make a short test recording and listen before capturing the full side.

Audacity’s Development Manual advises that a standalone turntable should not generally be connected directly to a computer unless making specialist recordings from pre-1950s discs. That warning concerns a conventional turntable’s phono signal; a USB turntable has its own USB audio connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the recording sound wrong?

  • Very quiet: The turntable may be sending an unamplified PHONO signal to a line input. Add a phono stage, switch the turntable to LINE, or use a receiver’s PHONO input and line-level output.
  • Tinny or weak in the bass: The signal may be missing RIAA playback equalization. Use a phono stage, or use the specialist dry-capture and software-correction method.
  • Loud or distorted: Reduce interface gain and check that a line-level output is not connected to a PHONO input. Excessive recording input can also cause distortion.
  • Only one channel: Confirm that the software track is stereo, that it is assigned to the correct pair of interface inputs, and that both channel cables are connected.
  • No USB input appears: Check that the computer recognizes the USB turntable and that the recording software has selected it as the input device.

Which connection route fits your setup?

Setup Route Key check
Turntable with PHONO output and no receiver Turntable → stereo phono preamp → paired interface inputs The preamp needs to provide phono gain and RIAA equalization.
Turntable with PHONO/LINE switch Set to LINE → paired interface inputs Do not add another phono stage in series.
Receiver with PHONO input and line/tape output Turntable → receiver PHONO input → receiver line/tape output → interface Use a suitable line-level output and follow the receiver’s instructions.
USB turntable USB → computer → select the turntable as the recording device Choose stereo channels for a stereo source and verify input activity.
Direct phono capture with later software correction Turntable → suitable high-gain input → record dry → apply RIAA correction This is an advanced workflow; the input and processing must be appropriate.
