To record a Snapchat video without holding the record button, use the built-in Hands Free control. In some versions of Snapchat it appears inside Director Mode; in others, it may be a separate control on the Camera toolbar. If you need time to get into position before filming, Snapchat’s Video Timer adds a 3- or 10-second countdown.
Record a Snapchat video without holding the button

Open Snapchat’s Camera screen and check the Camera Modes toolbar. Snapchat identifies the film-camera icon as the entry to Director Mode.

If Director Mode appears, open it and tap Hands Free in the toolbar to activate hands-free, multi-clip recording. See Snapchat’s Director Mode instructions.

If you do not see Director Mode, look for a separate Hands Free icon on the Camera toolbar. Snapchat says some controls may appear independently rather than in the same place as before.

Frame your shot, then use the hands-free control to record without continuously pressing the record button. Review the preview before sharing.
Start recording after a countdown
Use Video Timer when you need a moment to move into position or prepare the shot. Snapchat’s timer lets you choose a clip length and a 3- or 10-second countdown.

On the Camera screen, tap the Timer icon twice to open Video Timer. If you are recording with a Sound, Snapchat says one tap opens Video Timer.

Choose the clip length and select either the 3-second or 10-second countdown.

Why Director Mode or Hands Free may be missing
Snapchat’s help page notes that Director Mode may not appear in the same place in every interface, and some controls may be separate Camera toolbar icons. Check both locations and make sure Snapchat is up to date. Snapchat does not publish a complete device- or account-availability list for these controls, so their exact placement and availability can vary.

Other ways to control Snapchat without touching the screen
iPhone and iPad: Apple Voice Control
Apple Voice Control can operate device controls with spoken commands, including tapping and swiping. It is an operating-system accessibility feature, not a Snapchat recording mode, so whether a particular Snapchat button can be reached by voice depends on the app’s current interface and device setup. Apple says Voice Control requires iOS 13 or later or iPadOS, an initial download, and is not available in every country or region. Setup details are in Apple’s Voice Control guide.

Google Voice Access provides spoken commands for opening apps and navigating Android. Setup differs between Voice Access version 17.0 and later and earlier versions; the feature also needs the relevant accessibility permissions and configuration. Google lists English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Japanese. Voice Access is a platform-level tool, not a Snapchat-specific shortcut, so a particular recording control may not work hands-free on every device. See Google’s Voice Access guide.

Keep the phone in position
A phone stand or tripod can keep the camera pointed at a fixed shot while you record. It is optional: Snapchat’s built-in Hands Free control does not require one. Check the framing in the preview before sharing; hands-free recording alone does not guarantee a particular framing or audio result.
