For useful feedback, record only the screen area needed to show one issue, explain what you expected, demonstrate what happened, then review the clip and check its sharing permissions before sending. A short, focused recording is easier to understand—and less likely to expose unrelated information—than an unedited tour of your screen.
Prepare the screen and the feedback
Before opening the recorder, decide what the recipient needs to see and what they need to understand. A good feedback clip usually covers one issue or workflow, not several unrelated observations.
- Set up the exact state. Open the page, app, or workflow just before the action you want to demonstrate. Close unrelated tabs and windows. Hide notifications and sensitive material where feasible.
- Choose a clear example. If the issue depends on a particular account, record only what is necessary to reproduce it. Avoid exposing customer data, private messages, credentials, or other information the recipient does not need.
- Plan the explanation. Be ready to say what you expected, what you did, and what happened instead. Include enough context for someone else to reproduce the problem, but skip unrelated browsing.
- Decide whether to narrate or show your camera. Narration can clarify a sequence or expected result. A camera bubble is useful only if seeing you adds meaningful context. Screen-only capture is often sufficient.
Choose what to record
Use the narrowest capture scope that still explains the issue. A single tab or application window can keep unrelated material out of the clip; a region can be more focused still when the recorder supports it. Record the whole display only when the issue genuinely spans multiple apps or areas.
- One browser tab: useful for a web page or browser workflow, but confirm that browser-only capture will include everything the viewer needs.
- One window or app: useful for a desktop workflow contained in one application.
- A screen region: useful for a particular control or visual detail if the tool supports selecting an area.
- Full screen: appropriate when the steps cross windows or the whole desktop is relevant. Close unrelated content first.
Screen-sharing and recording controls vary by product and platform. In Zoom, participants can see everything displayed when you share the entire screen, including opened apps and files; choose a specific app or portion when practical. Check audio and camera before recording
If you plan to narrate, select the intended microphone and make a brief test. Speak at a normal volume and check the recorder’s audio meter or indicator, if available. A separate USB microphone is optional; use one if your built-in audio is difficult to understand. Loom’s Senior Marketing Manager Jeong Lee also recommends a good-quality microphone as vendor advice, not as a guarantee of recording quality. Loom’s desktop and mobile recording guide includes that recommendation.
Turn on a camera only if the added visual context helps. If you do use one, check where the camera bubble appears and whether it obscures the page, button, or error message you need to show. Recorder options differ: for example, Loom’s documented iOS workflow does not support screen and camera together, so do not assume desktop controls are available on a phone.

Record a focused demonstration
- Start with one brief sentence of context: name the page or task and the issue you are showing.
- State the expected result before or while you perform the relevant action.
- Demonstrate the steps at a pace the recipient can follow. Pause briefly on important text, errors, or visual changes.
- Identify what actually happened and, if helpful, where it differs from what you expected.
- Stop once the issue is clear. Do not keep recording unrelated work just to fill time.
A useful structure is: “I expected [result]. I’m doing [action]. Instead, [actual result].” You can add the environment or reproduction details the recipient needs, but keep the clip centered on one feedback issue.
Review, trim, and share the clip
Stop the recording and watch or inspect it before sending. Check that the important text is legible, the action is visible, and any narration is understandable. Look for private information that entered the frame and confirm the clip ends where it should. Trim an unnecessary beginning or ending if the recorder offers editing; retake the clip if the issue is hard to follow or key details are missing.

Give the recording a descriptive title and add a one-line explanation of what the recipient should look at. Before sharing a link, review its access settings and make sure the intended recipient can open it. For a local video file, use an approved delivery method and consider the file’s size and the recipient’s ability to receive it.
Use the controls for your platform
There is no single screen-recording path that applies to every computer, browser, and phone. Loom’s desktop app, Chrome extension, iOS app, and Android app have distinct capture choices and limitations; its support documentation describes those platform differences. Loom desktop app
Loom’s desktop instructions describe choosing full screen, a window, or—in a paid plan—custom size, then setting the camera and microphone or disabling them before starting. The page also identifies drawing, click highlighting, HD capture, and custom dimensions as plan-dependent features. Those are Loom-specific controls, not universal operating-system options. Loom Chrome extension
The browser extension supports browser-centered capture choices described by Loom, including a current tab, a window, full screen, or camera only. Loom notes limitations around recording a camera bubble outside Chrome and launching from several non-Chrome browsers. If the demonstration involves another app, confirm that the extension’s available mode can capture it before relying on it.

Loom on iOS and Android
Loom’s iOS guidance describes screen recording with optional microphone narration, but not simultaneous screen-plus-camera recording. Its Android documentation describes screen-only and screen/audio/camera combinations and states Android 8.0 or later is required. Mobile menus and controls are not necessarily the same as desktop controls; follow the instructions for the actual device and app version.
Zoom meeting recording
In Zoom, the host can record or grant a participant permission to record. Participants see a recording indicator. Zoom’s local recording workflow saves recordings on the computer; the support page identifies limitations compared with cloud recording, including no audio transcription and no separate shared-screen and participant recording in local capture. A local file can be uploaded separately if it needs to be shared. Follow the host’s permission workflow and workplace rules. See Zoom’s computer-recording instructions.

- The clip shows unrelated apps or information: stop and retake it using a tab, window, or region rather than full screen when the recorder supports that scope. Close unrelated material first.
- Your voice is missing or too quiet: check that the intended microphone is selected and enabled, then speak briefly and watch the audio indicator before recording the full demonstration.
- The important detail is hard to read: bring the relevant content into view before recording, avoid unnecessary movement, and review the clip at normal viewing size. Retake it if the text remains unclear.
- The camera bubble covers the issue: disable the camera or move the bubble if the platform allows it. On mobile, verify that the platform supports the combination you need.
- The recipient cannot open the link: inspect the recording’s access settings and adjust them for the intended audience, consistent with workplace policy.
- You cannot start a Zoom recording: check whether you are the host or have been granted recording permission. Zoom’s workflow distinguishes host controls from participant permission.
- A Loom control is missing: verify that the selected Loom platform supports it and check whether it is plan-dependent. Desktop, browser, iOS, and Android capabilities differ.

Should I record a video or send a screenshot for feedback?
Use video when the sequence of actions, timing, or narration matters. A still screenshot can work when one visible state is enough to explain the issue.
Do I need a separate microphone?
No. Use a separate microphone only if your existing audio is difficult to understand; screen-only capture is also an option.
