Key labels vary. Your keyboard may say PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen; on some laptops the key works only while you hold Fn.
Capture a selected area with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose the capture mode from the toolbar, then select the content.
- Windows copies the result to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, a document, or another image-capable application with Ctrl + V.
This is the best general shortcut when you need one window, a paragraph, a control, or an arbitrary rectangle rather than the whole desktop. The overlay supports four modes:
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline.
- Rectangle snip: drag a rectangular selection.
- Window snip: select a particular application window.
- Full-screen snip: capture the complete display through Snipping Tool.
After a snip, it is automatically copied into the Snipping Tool window. From there you can annotate, crop, save, or share it. If you need a file, use the save command in that window instead of assuming that the clipboard created a file.

Save a full-screen screenshot with Windows + PrtScn
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn together.
- The entire screen is captured without asking you to drag a selection.
- Open File Explorer and go to PicturesScreenshots.
This method is useful when you want a persistent image immediately. It does not depend on pasting into Paint or another application. If your Windows account redirects the Pictures folder, the Screenshots folder follows that redirected location.
Copy the whole screen with Print Screen
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) to place a full-screen snapshot in the clipboard. Open the destination application and press Ctrl + V to paste it, then save it from that application if you need a file.
On supported Windows builds, the Print Screen key can instead open screen snipping. Check Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard for Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. The setting determines whether the key launches the snipping experience rather than performing the traditional clipboard capture.
Screenshot a laptop that has no Print Screen key
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as the alternative on hardware without a PrtScn key. Hold all three keys together. Laptop manufacturers sometimes place the Print Screen function on another key or require Fn for secondary functions, so inspect the keyboard legends before trying combinations.

If the fallback does not work, use Windows logo key + Shift + S. That shortcut does not require a dedicated Print Screen key and provides region, window, freeform, and full-screen modes through the overlay.
Use Snipping Tool modes and a timed capture
Choose the right shape
Use rectangle for precise UI or text, freeform for an irregular object, window for a complete application frame, and full screen when every visible display area matters. The resulting snip opens in Snipping Tool, where annotation, cropping, saving, and sharing are available.
Delay the capture by one to five seconds
When a menu or temporary state must be visible, open Snipping Tool and use its delay control. Microsoft lists Alt + D for a delay of 1–5 seconds. Set the delay, start the snip, open or arrange the transient content, and let the timer reach zero before selecting the area.

Troubleshooting Windows 10 screenshot shortcuts
Nothing happens when you press Print Screen
- Confirm the label: try PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen.
- Hold Fn if the key shares a secondary function on a laptop.
- Check Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Use Windows + Shift + S as a key-independent alternative.
The screenshot is not in PicturesScreenshots
Only Windows + PrtScn is the direct file-saving shortcut in this set. Print Screen and Windows + Shift + S place captures in the clipboard or Snipping Tool workflow until you save them. For Windows + PrtScn, check the Pictures folder associated with the signed-in Windows account and then open its Screenshots subfolder.

Pasting produces an older image
Take a new capture, then paste immediately with Ctrl + V. A clipboard-based method does not create a named file until you save it from the application where you pasted or from Snipping Tool.
A menu closes before you capture it
Use Snipping Tool’s delay and select a value from one to five seconds. Start the timed capture, open the menu, and wait for the countdown to finish.
The keyboard has no PrtScn marking
Try the documented Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar combination. If the hardware still does not respond, Windows + Shift + S is the practical software route. A USB keyboard with a Print Screen key is another option for a desktop or laptop setup that frequently needs full-screen captures.
