On a supported Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone, start or answer a normal cellular call, wait until it connects, then tap Record in the Google Phone app. Tap Stop recording when finished. Availability depends on your exact model, regional software, country, SIM carrier, and local rules. The other participant may hear an automated recording notice.
Check whether your Xiaomi supports call recording
Xiaomi does not provide call recording on every device. Its support documentation says availability depends on the phone model, country or region, and SIM-card carrier. MIUI or HyperOS version and whether the phone uses Google Phone or another dialer also matter. See Xiaomi’s eligibility and troubleshooting guidance at Xiaomi Support.
- Open the Phone app.
- Place or receive a standard cellular call.
- Wait until the other person answers.
- Look for Record on the in-call screen. If it is not visible, tap More or swipe across the call controls.
This test is more reliable than looking for a universal settings switch. The documented feature concerns calls handled by the Phone app; it does not establish recording support for WhatsApp, Telegram, Zoom, or other internet-call services.
Requirements and restrictions
- Google’s guidance generally requires Android 9 or newer and the latest Phone app.
- The device, regional build, and carrier must support recording.
- The call must be answered before recording can start.
- Recording may be unavailable while a call is on hold or during a conference call.
- Google Phone may announce to both participants when recording starts and stops.

Record a phone call
- Open Phone.
- Make or answer a call.
- Wait for the call to connect.
- Tap Record. Confirm a prompt if one appears.
- Tap Stop recording to finish.
The announcement heard by the other person is expected Google Phone behavior, not evidence that recording failed. Google says both participants are notified when recording begins and ends.
Automatic recording, when available
If your dialer exposes the feature, open Phone > More options > Settings > Call recording. You may see controls for automatic recording of unknown numbers or selected contacts. These options are market-specific; Google’s cited guidance identifies automatic recording of unknown numbers as an India-only option, so do not expect the menu on every Xiaomi phone or in every country.

Find and play a saved recording
From the Phone app
- Open Phone and choose Recents.
- Tap the arrow or details icon beside the recorded call.
- Open the call-history entry to access the recording.
With File Manager
- Open File Manager.
- Choose Storage.
- Open MIUI, then sound_recorder, then call_rec.
The usual location is:
Internal storage/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec
Some software versions use different capitalization, such as MIUI/Sound_recorder/Call_rec. Xiaomi documents both the call-history route and this local-storage path in its recording-storage instructions. Xiaomi’s separate storage guide notes that tablets do not have this phone-call-recording location. The support pages do not establish automatic Xiaomi Cloud backup, so do not assume recordings are synced there.
Troubleshoot a missing or failed recording
No Record button
- Confirm the call has been answered.
- Try a regular cellular call rather than a conference or app-based call.
- Check that Google Phone is the active dialer.
- Update the Phone app and restart the phone.
- Verify your Android and HyperOS or MIUI software is current.
- Check the support page for your exact regional model.
- Ask your carrier whether the SIM and network permit recording.
If the control remains absent, the model, region, carrier, or local rules may simply make recording unavailable. Xiaomi advises checking with the carrier and following local law; changing region settings is not a guaranteed or supported fix.

Recording starts but the file is missing
- Reopen the recorded call under Phone > Recents.
- Search File Manager for
call_rec. - Check free internal storage.
- Confirm that recording actually started rather than only displaying a prompt.
Only one side is audible
Possible causes include carrier or regional implementation, Bluetooth or headset routing, VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling behavior, interference from another dialer, a software defect, or recording an app-based call. Xiaomi’s official material confirms the model, region, and carrier dependencies but does not provide a universal cause or fix for one-sided audio.
Legal and privacy considerations
Call-recording law differs by jurisdiction. Some places require consent from every participant, and interstate or international calls can involve multiple rules. You are responsible for complying with the law where the participants are located. Do not try to suppress Google Phone’s disclosure or bypass regional restrictions. Google discusses consent requirements in its call-recording guidance; Xiaomi likewise directs users to review local law and consult their carrier.

Alternatives and unsafe workarounds
Third-party recorder apps may fail because of Android restrictions, permissions, audio routing, carrier behavior, or regional policy. A listing in an app store does not guarantee that both sides will be captured. Avoid unofficial APKs, modified dialers, rooting or firmware changes solely to obtain recording, and apps claiming to remove Google’s announcement. A second device recording a speakerphone call is an equipment workaround, not a way around consent, privacy, or confidentiality obligations.
The Bottom Line
If Record does not appear during an answered cellular call, update the Phone app, check your exact Xiaomi model and region, and confirm carrier support. There may be no supported way to enable the feature on that configuration.
