Before class, check recording permissions and storage; afterward, review the file, protect participant privacy and third-party rights, then upload it through YouTube Studio and choose access deliberately. A recording notice does not by itself settle whether you may publish the class.
Before recording: check permission, storage, and the intended audience
Recording availability depends on the meeting platform, account type, host permissions, and organization settings. Check these before class rather than assuming that a record button will be available. If you are a participant, ask the host; if the account is managed by a school or employer, ask its administrator when settings are locked.

- Tell participants in advance and follow the applicable school, employer, and local rules for recording and sharing. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and by whether students are minors.
- Decide whether the video is for public teaching or restricted class access. That decision affects what participant information should be captured and which YouTube visibility setting is appropriate.
- Confirm where the recording will be stored, who can access it, and whether there is enough local or cloud storage for the session.
How to record a Zoom class
Zoom computer recording is available on free and paid accounts, but account owners or administrators can disable it, and participant permissions can affect who may request or start a recording. It requires the Zoom desktop application on Windows, macOS, or Linux; computer recording is not supported on iOS or Android. Zoom’s computer recording can capture video, shared content, audio, chat messages, and closed captions.
- In the Zoom web portal, open Settings > Recording and enable Record to computer files. If the control is locked, ask the account administrator to review the policy.
- Join the class using the Zoom desktop app. Start recording only when permitted by the host and account settings; if you are not the host, use the available request or permission flow.
- After the meeting, locate the computer recording on the device used to record. Allow time and disk space for the recording to finish processing, then play the file before uploading.
Because this is a local computer recording, check the device’s available disk space before a long class and keep the computer available until the file has completed processing.

How to record a Google Meet class
Google Meet recording must be enabled by the organization’s Google Workspace administrator, and the host or a participant with eligible host permissions must be allowed to record. Education accounts have different eligibility: Education Fundamentals and Education Standard do not let teachers, staff, or students record meetings they organize; Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus have different recording eligibility.
- Before class, confirm with the organizer or Workspace administrator that recording is enabled for your account and meeting.
- During the meeting, use Meet’s recording control if it is available to you and permitted by the organization.
- After the recording is processed, open the meeting organizer’s Google Drive and look in the Google Meet folder. Google says the video includes the active speaker and presented material. Users can download the file from Drive.
- Check Drive and organization storage quotas before class. Captions can be recorded, but caption availability may lag behind the video file.
As of Google’s help guidance accessed October 3, 2026, existing items in “Meet Recordings” are being moved into a “Legacy Meet Recordings” folder within “Google Meet”; new recordings use meeting-specific subfolders. If a past recording is not where expected, check those locations in Drive.

How to record a Microsoft Teams class
Teams recording requires an eligible license and the organizer’s cloud recording policy and IT settings to allow it. Under Microsoft’s standard conditions, guests and users from other organizations cannot start or stop the recording. Storage location depends on the meeting type: recordings are saved to the organizer’s OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, and external attendees may need the recording explicitly shared with them.
Recommended Free Tools
- In the meeting, open More actions > Record and transcribe > Start recording, then confirm.
- Participants receive an automatic recording notification. Follow your institution’s policy and any applicable consent requirements.
- After the meeting, find the recording in the organizer’s OneDrive for Business or the relevant SharePoint location. Ask the organizer to share it if you cannot access it.
Teams recordings do not capture every meeting element. Microsoft lists limitations including more than four video streams at once, whiteboards and annotations, shared notes, app-shared content, and embedded PowerPoint Live video or animation. Availability, storage, permissions, and expiration can also depend on organizational settings, so inspect the recording rather than assuming every shared element appears.

Which recording method fits your class?
| Platform | Who must enable or permit recording | Where the file is saved | Important capture or access consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom computer recording | Account settings must allow computer recording; host and participant permissions can also matter. | Locally on the computer used to record. | Requires the desktop app on Windows, macOS, or Linux; not supported on iOS or Android. Can capture video, shared content, audio, chat, and closed captions. |
| Google Meet | Workspace administrator must enable it; host or eligible host-permission participant must be allowed to record. | Meeting organizer’s Drive, in the Google Meet folder. | Captures active speaker and presented material. Education edition eligibility varies; check Drive quota and caption availability. |
| Microsoft Teams | Eligible license, organizer cloud-recording policy, and IT settings are required. | Organizer’s OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, depending on meeting type. | Has documented capture limitations; external attendees may need explicit sharing, and organizational settings may affect access or expiration. |
Review and prepare the recording before upload
Play the whole file or review it carefully before publication. Platform recordings capture a configured meeting view, not necessarily every on-screen element, and a meeting notice does not grant permission to publish everyone’s contributions.
- Check that speech is audible, slides are legible, and the beginning and ending are intact.
- Look for student names, faces, chat messages, questions, or other personal information that does not need to be public. Edit it out or restrict access as appropriate.
- Check whether slides, music, video clips, images, or other third-party materials may be shared. A class recording does not transfer ownership of those materials.
- Obtain any required permission and follow institutional policy before publication. Zoom’s terms put responsibility for compliance with applicable law, including laws requiring recording consent, on users. The legal requirements for a particular class depend on the context and jurisdiction.
YouTube’s copyright guidance warns that uploading someone else’s work can lead to a Content ID claim or copyright removal request. Giving credit alone does not grant permission, and YouTube does not decide ownership disputes. Use material you have rights to use, obtain permission, or rely only on a copyright exception that applies to your circumstances; no general fair-use guarantee applies to every class upload.

Upload the class recording in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select the upload option, then choose the reviewed video file.
- Add a clear title and description, set the audience, and add or review captions and subtitles. For educational uploads, YouTube offers education-specific fields such as type, level, academic system, and course or standard.
- Review the Checks page for copyright issues before publishing or scheduling.
- Choose the visibility setting that matches the audience, then publish or save the video.
YouTube’s copyright checks are useful screening, not a guarantee that a later claim or strike cannot occur.
Choose private, unlisted, or public visibility
| Setting | Who can watch | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Private | The creator and people specifically selected to access the video. Comments are unavailable. | Restricted sharing when the class contains sensitive material or access should be limited to selected people. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link can watch and reshare it. It does not ordinarily appear in search or on the channel’s Videos tab. | Convenient link sharing when link access is acceptable—not confidential or secure class access. |
| Public | Everyone; the video can be eligible for search, related videos, and recommendations. | A lesson intended for open public viewing, once participant privacy and content rights are addressed. |
If only enrolled participants should see the recording, do not treat an unlisted link as a security control. Use private sharing or an institution-approved learning platform when access must be restricted.
