Whether a Nikon camera can record longer than 30 minutes depends on the exact model and movie settings. Some Nikon cameras stop each internal recording at 29 minutes 59 seconds—or sooner at the highest quality—while certain newer models list manufacturer-stated maximums of about 90 or 125 minutes in specific modes. Check the limit for your camera, resolution, frame rate, and recording method before planning a long take.
Why Nikon cameras stop at different times
There is no single recording limit shared by all Nikon cameras. The maximum can depend on the camera model and the selected movie frame size, frame rate, quality or codec, and whether you record internally or through HDMI. A stated maximum is a limit for the specified configuration, not a guarantee that every camera will reach it: heat or other operating conditions can end a recording earlier.

“30 minutes” commonly refers to a per-movie limit of 29 minutes 59 seconds. It does not necessarily mean that every Nikon camera has that limit, or that the camera can record indefinitely by starting another file.

| Camera or source | Published duration | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nikon D600 | 20 minutes at highest quality; 29 minutes 59 seconds at normal quality | Nikon’s specifications distinguish quality settings. Nikon D600 specifications and D600 press release. |
| Nikon D7500 | 29 minutes 59 seconds per movie | Nikon also lists up to eight files of up to 4 GB each under the stated configuration. This is not an unlimited single recording. Nikon D7500 specifications. |
| Nikon Z 5II | Both 29 minutes 59 seconds and 125 minutes appear in Nikon’s specifications | The applicable figure depends on the selected mode. Check the specification table and manual for the intended settings. Nikon Z 5II specifications. |
| Nikon Z 8 | Approximately 125 minutes at 4K UHD/60p; approximately 90 minutes at 8K UHD/30p | These are Nikon-stated maximums for the named modes. Nikon Z 8 press release. |
| Nikon Z 9 | Approximately 125 minutes at 8K UHD/30p | Nikon announced this as a maximum for that mode, not a universal duration for all settings. Nikon Z 9 press release. |
| Nikon Z 6III and Z 6II | Z 6III: 125 minutes maximum internal recording; Z 6II: 29 minutes 59 seconds | Nikon’s comparison page gives different maximums for these models. Check the Z 6III mode details before recording. Nikon Z 6III comparison page. |
These examples illustrate why a model name alone may not be enough: the mode matters too. They do not establish the limit for every Nikon DSLR, Z-series camera, or COOLPIX model.

How to check your Nikon’s limit
- Identify the full camera model. Read the model name on the body or in the camera’s setup information. Do not rely on the brand or product family alone.
- Open the manual for that model. Use Nikon’s official product support or specifications for your region, then consult the manual’s movie-recording section and settings tables.
- Match your planned settings. Find the entry for the intended frame size or resolution, frame rate, quality or codec, and recording method. Record the limit shown for that combination rather than a headline maximum from another mode.
- Check storage and file behavior. Look for per-movie duration, file-size limits, and whether a recording can be divided into multiple files. Multiple files do not necessarily mean one uninterrupted take.
- Check operating conditions. Review the manual’s warnings about temperature, power, and card requirements. Leave margin in your schedule rather than assuming the camera will reach its maximum.
Can an external recorder get around the limit?
An HDMI monitor-recorder can provide an alternative recording workflow on supported camera and format combinations, but it is not a universal bypass. For example, Nikon identifies Atomos Ninja and Blackmagic Design Video Assist products as external-recorder options for the Z 7II. That compatibility reference does not establish that every recorder, Nikon body, HDMI format, or recording mode will work together, nor that an external recorder removes every camera-side limit. Nikon Z 7II specifications
Before relying on HDMI recording, verify the exact camera and recorder compatibility, supported output resolution and format, and any restrictions in their manuals. Also plan for heat, power, and storage on both devices. An external recorder changes where footage is captured; it should not be assumed to change the camera’s temperature behavior or every restriction on its output.

What can make recording stop early?
The published maximum is not the only factor. Nikon’s COOLPIX P520 manual warns that heat can terminate recording before the stated maximum, a model-specific example of why actual runtime can be shorter. Follow the operating and temperature guidance in the manual for your own camera. Nikon COOLPIX P520 manual

Plan a long recording without surprises
- Test the complete setup at the same resolution, frame rate, quality, card, power source, and recording method you plan to use.
- Check remaining card capacity and the camera’s file-splitting behavior; do not infer continuous recording time from the number of files alone.
- For a critical interview, event, or performance, arrange a second recording path where practical and verify it before the session.
- Keep ventilation and operating conditions within the camera manual’s guidance, especially for high-resolution or high-frame-rate modes.
