A direct media file or streaming manifest can often be opened by FFmpeg. If the authorized video plays in a browser but cannot be extracted, record that playback with OBS Studio. For a video you uploaded to YouTube, use YouTube Studio or Google Takeout before trying any general-purpose method.
Use these workflows only for videos and streams you own or are authorized to record. Service terms, copyright rules and access controls still apply, and no command works for every site.
Classify the URL before choosing a tool
There are two fundamentally different links:
- Video-page URL: a normal watch page containing a player, scripts and metadata. Pass this to an extractor that supports the site.
- Direct media or manifest URL: a URL ending in a media resource or playlist/manifest such as an HLS or DASH stream. Pass it to a media tool such as FFmpeg.
If you are unsure, open the link in a browser. A page with the site’s branding and player controls is usually a page URL. A link that downloads a file or displays raw playlist text is more likely to be a direct resource. Do not assume that copying a player URL from browser developer tools gives you a permanent, shareable file: signed links can expire and may depend on your browser session.
Method 1: Record a supported video page with yt-dlp
yt-dlp is the practical first choice for an on-demand page when the service has a current extractor. Install it using the method recommended for your operating system, then verify that the command is available:

yt-dlp --version
ffmpeg -versionFFmpeg is important because many sites expose separate video-only and audio-only formats. yt-dlp can download both and merge them into one file when FFmpeg is installed.
Start with automatic format selection
yt-dlp "PAGE_URL"This asks yt-dlp to choose a suitable available format. To explicitly request the best video and best audio streams and merge them:
yt-dlp -f "bestvideo+bestaudio" "PAGE_URL"The result and container depend on what the service provides. A “best” selection is not a promise of a particular resolution, codec or file extension, and some sites offer only a single combined stream.
Inspect formats before downloading
yt-dlp -F "PAGE_URL"The list shows format IDs, codecs, dimensions and audio availability. After choosing IDs, download them explicitly:
yt-dlp -f VIDEO_ID+AUDIO_ID "PAGE_URL"Replace both placeholders with IDs from the listing. FFmpeg then merges the streams when possible. If you want a predictable output name:
yt-dlp -f "bestvideo+bestaudio" -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" "PAGE_URL"Live streams and interrupted downloads
Live delivery behaves differently from an on-demand file. The available formats can change while a broadcast is running, and a recording may not have a final duration until the stream ends. Keep enough disk space for the entire capture. If a connection drops, yt-dlp’s retry and fragment options may help, but the service can still end the stream or invalidate its session.

Method 2: Capture a direct stream with FFmpeg
When you have an authorized direct media or manifest URL, FFmpeg uses the general pattern of input options, -i and an output:
ffmpeg -i "STREAM_URL" -c copy output.mkv-c copy requests stream copying rather than re-encoding, which is usually faster and preserves the source bitstreams. Success depends on the input codecs, packaging, server behavior and whether the chosen container can hold those streams. MKV is a flexible starting container, but it is not universally ideal.
When stream copying fails
An error may indicate that the input is not a plain file, that the server requires session headers, or that the selected output container is incompatible. Try letting FFmpeg choose compatible output handling by removing -c copy:
ffmpeg -i "STREAM_URL" output.mp4This can require substantial CPU time and may reduce quality because video and audio are re-encoded. It also does not bypass authentication, encryption or a service’s access controls.
Use a URL with query parameters safely
Quote the complete URL in your shell. An ampersand separates shell commands unless it is inside quotes:
ffmpeg -i "https://example.test/live/playlist.m3u8?id=123&part=1" -c copy recording.mkvThe same quoting rule applies to yt-dlp. A copied address can stop working outside the browser that obtained it. Depending on the service, the request may need the same IP address, cookies or HTTP headers as playback. Use only your own session credentials and do not attempt to defeat an access restriction.

Method 3: Record browser playback with OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the fallback when an authorized stream plays normally in a browser but direct extraction is unavailable or unsuitable. It records the rendered playback rather than downloading the source stream, so quality is limited by browser playback, display resolution and OBS settings.
- Open the authorized stream in your browser and test that it plays smoothly.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture source for the browser, or a Display Capture source if window capture does not show the video correctly.
- Open Settings > Output, choose the recording path and container, and select a recording preset appropriate to your system.
- Choose a hardware encoder if OBS offers one on your computer; otherwise select an available software encoder.
- Start a short test recording, play the stream, then stop and inspect the file before recording the full program.
OBS states that it has no watermarks or other limitations and can be used commercially with no restrictions. That statement concerns OBS itself; it does not grant rights to record someone else’s video. Screen recording is also not a method for circumventing a service’s protections.
Reduce common OBS problems
- Black video: try Window Capture instead of Display Capture, disable browser hardware acceleration if appropriate, or test another capture source.
- Choppy output: lower the capture resolution or frame rate, close unnecessary applications and check encoder load.
- No audio: verify the browser is included in the selected audio source and that the correct monitoring device is chosen.
- Huge files: use a recording format and quality setting suited to the available disk space; do not wait until the disk is nearly full.
For your own YouTube uploads, use the official export
If the video belongs to your YouTube account, YouTube Studio is the first choice. Its creator-download feature provides an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size. Google Takeout can download all of your uploaded videos in one export. The official creator-download feature does not download another user’s upload.
This route preserves the platform’s intended account and ownership checks and is generally simpler than reconstructing a playback request. For another person’s video, obtain permission and follow the platform’s terms rather than treating a recorder as an official download feature.

Choose based on the URL type, whether the source is live or on-demand, your authorization, whether audio and video are separate, the desired container and how important source quality is. No route is universally best.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unsupported URL” or “No suitable extractor”
Confirm that you supplied the actual video page rather than a surrounding article, search result or shortened redirect. Update yt-dlp and check its current supported-site information. Services change URL schemes and delivery systems, so an extractor that worked previously can become stale.

The browser plays it, but the copied URL returns an error
The media address may be temporary or tied to the browser’s IP, cookies or headers. Return to the authorized page and use yt-dlp, or use OBS. Do not publish or share session cookies.
Only video or only audio is present
Inspect formats with yt-dlp -F and select a video-plus-audio combination. Ensure FFmpeg is installed and on your PATH. With a direct URL, examine the input streams in FFmpeg’s console output before choosing an output container.

FFmpeg says the output format is invalid
The source codec or packaging may not fit the chosen extension. Try output.mkv with stream copy, or allow re-encoding to a compatible MP4. Re-encoding is slower and may alter quality.
The recording stops unexpectedly
Check network stability, available disk space, stream duration and whether the provider ended or rotated the broadcast. A live stream can disappear without leaving a complete file. Retry only when you remain authorized to access it.
OBS records a black screen or stutters
Switch between Window Capture and Display Capture, test a short clip, lower output load and select a hardware encoder if available. Browser playback itself must be smooth before OBS can produce a smooth recording.
