How to Record a Video for Free on Windows, Mac, and iPhone

Use free built-in tools to record a camera video or screen on Windows, Mac, or iPhone, with OBS Studio as an option for more control.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can record a video for free with tools already on your device. For a camera or webcam clip, use the Windows Camera app or QuickTime Player on Mac. To capture what is happening on your screen, use Xbox Game Bar on Windows, Screenshot or QuickTime on Mac, or Screen Recording on iPhone. If you need multiple sources or a custom layout, use OBS Studio.

First choose what you want to record

“Record a video” can mean filming yourself with a camera or webcam, or capturing a screen, app, or game. These are different workflows: a camera app does not capture your desktop, and a screen recorder may not capture every app or protected window.

  • Camera video: choose this for a webcam clip, presentation, or piece-to-camera.
  • Screen recording: choose this for a tutorial, app demonstration, or game clip.
  • Custom recording: choose OBS Studio if you need several sources, scenes, or a camera overlay.

Before a long take, make a short test recording and play it back. Check that the picture, voice, and any system audio you need are present.

Record a camera video on Windows

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Select Video.
  3. Select the video button to begin recording, then select Stop when finished.
  4. Review the thumbnail. Use the app’s folder option to locate the saved video.

This records the view from a connected camera; it is not a desktop screen recorder. See Microsoft’s Windows Camera app guide if the controls differ on your version.

Apple documents both Screenshot and QuickTime for screen capture. Some apps may block recording of their windows, so a missing or blank app image does not necessarily mean the recorder is broken. Apple gives details in its Mac screen-recording guide.

When OBS Studio is worth setting up

OBS Studio is free and open-source software for video recording and live streaming. It captures and mixes video and audio in real time, and is useful when you want scenes, several capture sources, or a configurable recording with a camera overlay. For one straightforward webcam clip, the built-in recorder is usually the quicker route.

The OBS Project lists support for Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux. Meeting a listed OS requirement does not guarantee that a particular computer will record smoothly; performance depends on the system and recording setup. Download details and current requirements are on the OBS Project website.

Choose the simplest tool that meets your needs

What you need Start with Trade-off to check
Quick webcam clip on Windows Camera app Captures the camera view, not the screen.
Quick webcam clip on Mac QuickTime Player Check the selected camera and microphone.
Windows app or game clip Xbox Game Bar The documented workflow targets an app or game.
Mac screen capture Screenshot or QuickTime Some app windows may not be recordable.
iPhone screen tutorial Built-in Screen Recording Some apps restrict capture; microphone is an explicit option.
Multiple sources or a custom layout OBS Studio More setup than a basic built-in recorder.

Make the choice based on whether you need camera or screen capture, microphone or system audio, a face-camera overlay, multiple sources, and how much setup you want. Also confirm where the file is saved and which apps permit capture.

Audio, storage, and recording checks

  • Choose the microphone deliberately. Mac screen recording lets you select a microphone, and iPhone lets you enable its microphone before starting. In OBS, audio sources are mixed with the video.
  • Check system audio separately. Do not assume narration and app audio are both included; make a test and listen to it.
  • Check available space. “Free” means the listed built-in features and software have no stated purchase requirement in the cited support or product pages. It does not mean your device has unlimited storage.
  • Check app restrictions. Certain apps may block screen recording, and behavior and menus can vary by operating-system version.

Common problems and fixes

The recording has no voice

Check that the intended microphone is selected or enabled. On iPhone, turn on Microphone by touching and holding the Screen Recording control before starting; on Mac, choose a microphone in the screen-recording options. Record and play back a short test before the real take.

The video shows the camera but not the desktop

The Windows Camera app records a camera view. For an app or game clip, use Xbox Game Bar; for Mac screen capture, use Screenshot or QuickTime. Use OBS when you need a more configurable combination of sources.

An app window is blank or will not record

The app may restrict capture. Apple specifically notes that some apps, such as Apple TV, might not allow their windows to be recorded. Try recording a permitted screen or app instead; a different recorder does not guarantee that restricted content can be captured.

You cannot find the saved clip

For Xbox Game Bar, check Videos/Captures. iPhone screen recordings appear in Photos. For the Windows Camera app, review the thumbnail and use its folder option. For other tools, check the save location shown in their controls.

The result is not usable despite a successful recording

Make a brief test, play it back, and verify framing, focus, sound, and the intended app or screen area before recording a full take. This catches the most common setup mistakes without requiring paid software.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your next step is keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, that is different from recording a camera or screen clip. StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
