How to Record a Road Trip Route and Add Notes and Photos

Google Maps Timeline can recover where you drove, while My Maps turns that route into a curated record with named stops, notes, layers, and selected photos. Here is how to combine them without confusing a private journal with public map contributions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use two Google Maps tools together for the most reliable road-trip record: Google Maps Timeline can reconstruct where you actually traveled after you opt in, while Google My Maps lets you deliberately build a map with named stops, a drawn route, notes, layers, and selected photos. Google Maps’ Saved trips feature is useful for keeping a route handy for navigation, but it is not a full travel journal.

Which Google Maps tool should you use?

Your choice depends on whether the trip has already happened and whether you want an automatic record or a curated keepsake.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Tool Best for What it records Where you edit it Privacy and limitations
Google Maps Timeline Reconstructing a route you actually drove Device location history, visits, routes, and travel modes while enabled Google Maps app; current Android instructions are documented for version 11.106 and later Opt-in precise-location collection, including when Google apps are not open; not available on Android Go according to the current Android help page
Google My Maps Creating an itinerary, annotated map, or trip keepsake Manually added places, drawn lines, descriptions, layers, imported route files, and selected photos Computer You choose what to add; it does not automatically reconstruct every road you drove
Saved trips Opening a frequently used route quickly A saved set of directions and its travel mode Google Maps on mobile Designed for navigation shortcuts, not a detailed historical journal with notes and photos

A practical sequence is to use Timeline to recover the factual route, then reproduce the important parts in My Maps with readable stop names, notes, and selected images. If you are planning to drive the same route again, save the directions separately.

How do I record the route I actually drove?

Understand Timeline before turning it on

Timeline is off by default. Google’s official wording is: “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” Turning it on means consenting to regular saving of your device’s precise location, including periods when Google apps are not open. Review that trade-off before enabling it.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Timeline is a recovery tool, not a guarantee that every turn will be perfect. You can edit an incorrect place or time, and the feature can identify travel modes. Location conditions, device settings, and gaps in the phone’s data can affect the result.

Turn on Timeline on a supported Android phone

The following path reflects Google’s current Android instructions. Labels and availability can change by device and app version.

  1. Update Google Maps to version 11.106 or later. The current guidance says Timeline is not available on Android Go devices.
  2. Open the Google Maps app.
  3. Tap your profile picture.
  4. Choose Your Timeline.
  5. Open Location & privacy settings.
  6. Turn on Location and Timeline, then review the consent information.

Once enabled, leave the phone with you during the drive and keep its location capability available. Timeline stores the record on the device according to Google’s current product behavior; controls and storage details can vary by platform, so check the settings shown on your phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review a completed trip

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture and select Your Timeline.
  3. Select the date of the drive.
  4. Inspect the route, visits, times, and travel modes.
  5. Correct a place or time when Timeline has assigned it incorrectly.

Use the date view to separate a long drive into meaningful stops. A stop that looks wrong should be corrected before you copy it into a permanent My Maps journal; otherwise the error becomes part of your curated record.

Export and back up the record

If the trip matters, preserve a copy instead of relying on one device. On current Android guidance, export through:

Device Settings → Location → Location services → Timeline → Export Timeline data

Timeline backup is a separate opt-in. You must opt in on each device, and Google says a change can take a few days to appear in a backup. Exporting and backing up serve different purposes: an export gives you a copy you control, while backup helps maintain Timeline data across supported devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix common Timeline problems

  • No route appears: Confirm that Timeline was enabled before the drive. It cannot reliably recreate time when the feature was off.
  • A stop is wrong: Open the date in Your Timeline and edit the place or time before using the information in My Maps.
  • The route has gaps: Check the phone’s location setting, battery restrictions, and whether the device stayed with you. A gap is not proof that you took a different road.
  • You cannot find the setting: Check the Maps app version and device type. The current Android instructions are platform-specific, and Android Go is excluded in that guidance.
  • A backup is not current: Backup is opt-in on each device, and Google notes that changes can take a few days to appear.

How can I add notes to a road trip map?

Create a Google My Maps map on a computer

My Maps is the deliberate, editable record. It is a computer workflow, so use a desktop or laptop browser when building it.

  1. Open Google My Maps and create a new map.
  2. Give the map a descriptive name, such as “Utah loop, May 2026,” and add a map description.
  3. Search for a public place, select it, and add it to the map, or place a marker directly where you want one.
  4. Rename each marker with a useful label: “Night 2 — Moab,” “Scenic overlook,” or “Fuel and groceries.”
  5. Open the marker’s details and add the information you want to remember, such as arrival time, reservation notes, trail conditions, or a short personal observation.
  6. Use the line tool to draw the route. Name the line and save it.

Draw a route as one continuous line when you want a simple overview, or split it into logical legs when notes differ by day. Do not claim that a manually drawn line is a GPS trace unless you imported actual route data or checked it against Timeline.

Organize stops with layers

Layers keep a busy map readable. Useful categories include overnight stops, scenic detours, food stops, fuel, hikes, and practical errands. The documented My Maps limit is 10 layers. Each layer can contain up to 2,000 lines, shapes, or places, and one map can contain up to 10,000 such items. These are software capacity limits, not measurements of travel behavior.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Put each marker in the layer that matches how you will use the map. For example, a hotel belongs in “Overnight,” while a viewpoint belongs in “Scenic stops.” Keeping categories separate lets you hide a layer when you want a clean driving overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import a route you already have

If you recorded a route with another device or service, My Maps’ import workflow accepts GPX, KML, CSV, TSV, XLSX, Google Sheets, and other formats listed on its current import screen. Importing is useful when a manually drawn line would lose the detail in your original track.

The current help guidance says not to import more than 2,000 rows. My Maps can import up to 100 photos at a time, and file-size limits differ by file type. For a large or unusual file, check the live import screen rather than assuming that every format has the same limit.

  1. Open the target map on a computer.
  2. Select the layer that should receive the data, or create a new layer.
  3. Choose the import option.
  4. Select a supported file, Google Sheet, or other listed source.
  5. Match the columns or fields requested by the importer.
  6. Review the resulting lines and markers, rename important features, and move them into the correct layers.

Can I add my trip photos to the map?

Use My Maps for a personal trip archive

My Maps can import one or more photos stored in Google Drive or Google Photos. This is the appropriate route for a private or selective travel record: add photos to the markers or map data you intentionally curate, while keeping the originals in your normal photo library.

  1. Upload or retain the chosen images in Google Drive or Google Photos.
  2. Open your map on a computer and select the relevant layer or marker.
  3. Use the map’s import or item-editing controls to choose the photo source.
  4. Select the photos to associate with the map content.
  5. Add a caption or note that explains what the image shows and when it was taken.
  6. Save, then open the marker again to confirm that the image and note appear as intended.

Import only the images that improve the map. A few representative photos per stop are easier to browse than an unfiltered camera roll, and the map remains useful when each image has a clear place and description.

Why ordinary Google Maps photo contributions are different

Google Maps photo contributions are intended for eligible public places. Google’s help documentation says they cannot be attached to arbitrary addresses or coordinates and excludes private residences and geographical areas. Therefore, a contribution is not a private pin for any point along your route.

Public contributions can expose the account name shown on your contributor About page, other contributed media, reviews, and location information associated with the media. Treat that as a publishing action, not as a personal notebook entry.

You can delete a contributed photo from Google Maps, but deleting it there does not remove the original from your phone’s gallery, Google Photos, or Drive backups. Manage those copies separately if you need complete removal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do I save my road trip route for later?

Google Maps’ Saved trips feature is mobile-only and is intended for quick access to routes you use again. Official help lists driving, public transport, and two-wheeler trips. It is separate from both Timeline and My Maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Maps on your phone and enter directions for the route.
  2. Choose the travel mode you want to preserve.
  3. Use the route’s save control to add it to Saved trips.
  4. Open Saved trips later to launch the directions again.
  5. Remove the saved route when it is no longer useful, or edit its travel mode when the feature offers that option.

Saved trips does not document what happened on the journey. It does not replace a historical route log, a custom map with notes, or a photo archive.

A complete road-trip recording workflow

For a record that is both accurate and readable, separate automatic evidence from editorial choices.

  1. Before departure: Decide whether you accept Timeline’s precise-location collection and turn it on if you do. Confirm the app and device support the current instructions.
  2. During the drive: Keep the enabled phone with you. Take normal photos and record important details in a private note if you do not want them published.
  3. After each travel day: Review Timeline while the details are fresh. Correct wrong places or times and identify the stops worth preserving.
  4. Build the map: Create a My Maps map, add named markers, draw or import the route, and assign items to layers.
  5. Add context: Write concise notes for decisions a future reader will need—where you stayed, why you took a detour, or what required a reservation.
  6. Select photos: Import a small set from Drive or Google Photos and caption them. Keep the complete originals in your private library.
  7. Preserve the source: Export Timeline data and opt into backup separately if retaining the underlying record is important.
  8. Save repeat navigation: Add the route to Saved trips only if you expect to drive it again.

Privacy checks before you share anything

  • Timeline: Enabling it authorizes recurring precise-location saving, including when Google apps are not open. Review, edit, or delete Timeline data when needed.
  • My Maps: Add only the stops, lines, notes, and images you intend to preserve or share. Remove home addresses and other sensitive details before distributing a map.
  • Public photo contributions: Assume that your contributor identity and related media information may be visible. Do not use this feature for a private route diary.
  • Backups and originals: Removing an image from Maps does not remove copies in your phone gallery, Google Photos, or Drive.

Troubleshooting a finished map

The route is accurate but hard to read

Break it into day-by-day legs or meaningful segments, then use layers for categories. A single enormous line with every stop mixed together is difficult to navigate and annotate.

The map contains too many markers

Keep a private master list elsewhere, then add only decision-relevant stops to My Maps. Use the layer structure rather than creating duplicate markers for the same place.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

An imported file fails

Check the format, row count, and file-size rules shown by the current importer. The documented row guidance is no more than 2,000 rows, and the maximum of 100 photos applies to a photo import, not necessarily to every other file type.

A photo will not attach to a location

Use My Maps for selected photos from Google Drive or Google Photos. Ordinary Google Maps contributions are limited to eligible public places and cannot be attached to arbitrary coordinates, private residences, or geographical areas.

You want a paper companion

A road-trip notebook can complement the digital map for handwritten mileage, impressions, or receipts, but it is optional and is not required for any Google Maps workflow.

What to keep in the final road-trip record

  • A clear map title and date range
  • The route, divided into useful legs
  • Named overnight stops and major detours
  • Notes that explain choices, reservations, and practical details
  • A small, captioned selection of photos
  • An exported or backed-up copy of Timeline data when the factual route matters
  • A separate Saved trip only when the route is useful for future navigation
