Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYouTube can automatically save a replay of a livestream that is shorter than 12 hours, but it warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For a dependable copy—especially for a long event—record locally while you stream. In OBS Studio, set a recording location and format under Settings > Output, then start recording alongside the broadcast. Afterward, check both the local file and YouTube Studio’s Content > Live tab.
Choose the kind of recording you need
There are two different creator-side outcomes: a replay stored on your YouTube channel after the broadcast, and a local video file saved on your computer as the stream happens. YouTube’s archive is convenient, but it is not a substitute for a backup if the footage matters. OBS can record while it streams, giving you a local copy for safekeeping or editing.

| Option | What it does | Main constraint | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic archive | Makes a replay available on your channel after the stream. | Streams over 12 hours may not be captured; archiving is not a backup guarantee. | A convenient replay for an ordinary-length broadcast. |
| OBS local recording | Saves a file to a location you choose while streaming or for offline use. | Uses local storage and computer resources; the recording format must suit your editing workflow. | A backup or a file you want to edit and keep. |
| YouTube DVR | Lets viewers pause or rewind during the live broadcast. | Rewind can be limited on very long streams; DVR does not create your local recording. | Viewer playback control during the event. |
Find and manage YouTube’s automatic replay
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam and mobile streams. It also says 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams are automatically archived. This is not a guarantee: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For important or longer events, keep a local recording too. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends maintaining a local archive as a backup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- End the livestream and allow YouTube time to process it.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then select the Live tab to find past streams.
- Open the stream’s details to review or change its Visibility, then save if you make a change.
- Open the replay and confirm it plays before you rely on it as your only copy.
YouTube says an archive is uploaded to the channel by default. Studio labels and screens can change; if they differ, use the current Live content view to locate the past broadcast. You can also delete an archive there. See the encoder livestream instructions and webcam livestream instructions.

Record your livestream locally with OBS
OBS Studio supports recording and streaming at the same time. Choose a destination with enough free storage, and consider how the file will be edited or played later. OBS notes that recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses additional computer resources. Its standard recording guide recommends MKV because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. If your editor needs a different container, plan and verify a conversion or remux step before the event rather than discovering a compatibility problem afterward. Read OBS’s standard recording output guide.
- Choose the destination. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the Recording Path to the folder or drive where you want the file saved. Check available space before going live; an external drive is optional, not required.
- Choose format and quality. In the recording settings, select a format appropriate for your editor and desired recovery resilience. Consider OBS’s MKV recommendation. Choose a quality setting that your computer can handle; a setting other than “Same as stream” adds resource demands.
- Start recording before or as you go live. Start the OBS recording as well as the stream. If you use an option to start recording automatically when streaming, verify that setting and the recording path before the broadcast.
- Stop cleanly and verify the file. When the event ends, stop the recording and confirm that the file exists and plays. Do this before deleting other copies or assuming the archive is safe.
- Check YouTube separately. Visit YouTube Studio’s Content > Live tab and verify whether the platform replay is available. The local file and the YouTube archive are separate copies.
The right workflow depends on whether you need a channel replay or an editable local file, how long the event runs, the storage you have, your computer’s available resources, and the file formats your editing tools accept.

Keep DVR separate from recording
DVR is a live-viewer feature, not a recording method. When enabled, it lets viewers pause, rewind and resume during a broadcast. For very long streams, rewind may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek back to before the creator went live. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live event; YouTube says they can still watch a recording of the full stream once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Review rights and replay privacy
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the live content, including applicable music rights, and comply with relevant rules. YouTube sets out these responsibilities in its livestream terms. After the event, review the archive’s visibility: choose public, unlisted or private according to who should be able to watch, especially if the stream included material you did not intend to publish broadly.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable recording
- The replay is missing from Studio: Check Content > Live after processing. If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube warns it may not have been captured; use a local copy if you made one.
- The local file is missing: Return to OBS Settings > Output and check the Recording Path. Look in that exact folder or drive, and confirm that recording was started.
- The local recording stopped or is incomplete: Check whether the drive ran out of space or the recording ended unexpectedly. MKV is OBS’s recommended standard format for resilience if recording does not stop gracefully, but no format can restore footage that was never written.
- The file will not open in your editor: Check whether the editor supports the selected container. If you planned to convert or remux it, verify that workflow before relying on it for an important event.
- The stream is recording but the computer struggles: Recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses additional resources according to OBS. Review the quality setting and test the intended streaming-and-recording setup before a critical broadcast.
- Viewers cannot rewind the live event: Check the stream’s DVR setting. DVR affects live pause and rewind, not whether a creator made a local recording.
